New "View" Co-Host Doesn't Know If the World Is Flat [VIDEO]

Posted by Adam Howard at 5:00 AM on September 20, 2007.

Sherri Shepherd, the latest addition to "The View", confidently says she doesn't believe in evolution but also doesn't know the shape of the Earth.

In this clever segment from Current TV, the parade of obnoxious ignorance on "The View" is addressed. The latest mind-boggling exchange occurred between comedian Sherri Shepherd and her other co-hosts, including Whoopi Goldberg. After refusing to accept evolution, (Huckabee, we've found you a running mate!), Goldberg asked Shepherd whether she thought the world was flat (trying to make a point about value of scientific evidence) and Shepherd claimed she didn't know and if her kids ever asked her she'd have to take them to the library to "look it up." Check out the video to your right for more.

Seriously, no one can possibly be this ignorant and be on television. Does anyone pick up a book anymore? She had to be kidding.

I cannot, absolutely cannot comprehend someone so totally ignorant and stupid enough to make the statements this women made. God help anyone asking her where passenger jets go when they go 'round the world' or why we have summers in the southern hemisphere while the US has winters. Or a pile of other questions concerning what we have intelligently learned over the past ... wow million years or more. She has got to be a throwback to prehistoric times.
How many other Americans think like this?
Unbelievable.

and with women like this, I doubt I will ever go back. Is Barbara Walters getting senile in her old age? It appears so.

Ignorance beyond belief! An example of an illiterate adult. By the way--you cannot, not believe in evolution, evolution is a fact--if you don't like what it implies, you can personally not accept the facts, but disbelief is not a choice.

She's waiting for her preacher to tell her what the bible says about the worlds shape. People like her don't know how to form an original thought.

I am a fan of The View but I am also a liberal. I was just as shocked over Sherri's remarks as the rest of you. Yesterday (Weds.) she was very embarrassed by what she had said. She said that of course she knows the world is not flat, she had become flustered & was not thinking. I'm willing to take her at her word even though I am still amazed that people will believe creationism over evolution. And, yes, I still miss Rosie even though I'm enjoying Whoopi.

I just want them to put someone on the show that will tear her up. That would be the only thing to make the show worth watching.

Hey folks, it's fine if you think she's an ignorant obnoxious idiot, but could you lay off the misogyny? The internet already has more than enough, and the line between this kind of quasi-harmless name-calling and sexually violent invective ("That little blonde bitch oughta get raped") gets crossed an awful lot.

I often see this sort of language about Ann Coulter and Condoleezza Rice, and although I find both of them revolting, the violent, sexual, personal attacks are troubling--and unnecessary.

Come on, progressives, let's aim for the high ground.

That seems fair. She is allowed to have her own views, what's next, you want her resignation because she's a black Christian? Her focus in life is to take care of her children and you mock her for it?

a few more thoughts

Thanks for the food for thought. Here's what I think:

1) Bottom line, of course, you can use whatever words you want to express your anger. Do what you gotta do.

2) I don't mean that most folks who would call this twerp a "little blonde bitch" would make the leap to explicitly obscene and violent language. It does open the door for the discussion to devolve, thought, and it often does. (Not here, happily.)

3) It's a good idea to examine this particular phrase more closely. To call her LITTLE and BLONDE in addition to the obvious epithet is to make the whole phrase about this person being a woman. The subtext is that a big part of what makes this person obnoxious to the name-caller is her femaleness. Calling a guy a "dumb little dick" really isn't the same--it's a gender-specific epithet, sure, but femaleness is "marked" in our society: the default setting is male. (This is why little girls can wear blue but little boys get teased for wearing pink.) So focusing on a target's femaleness via "little blonde bitch" type language has a very different, frankly more hateful, vibe to it.

4) I like to believe that the reason right wingers so often resort to ad hominem attacks and name-calling is that they're dead wrong on all the actual issues. Since we're so fabulously right all the time, I reckon we progressives don't need to go down that road. But if you think Kerry would have won if he'd called Bush an evil, incompetent little *&*$#&* a few times, I'm happy to have the next nominee swear a blue streak.

even the catholic church "pardoned" Galileo (a few centuries late, but hey, it's the catholic church!) for using the telescope and confirming Kepler's thoughts on the earth's orbit etc. I guess that ABC-The View-Ms. Sherry Shepherd are even more ignorant/reactionary than the c.c. Amazing! And then we complain the American (US) kids are failing at school...

Re the other poster who voiced that Sheri is a black, loud and overweight woman who is a walking stereotype of what our media culture has been saying black women embody.
So they threw Whoopi over for this numbskull? Good job, ABC!

Maybe Ms. Shepherd was hired in order to give those who dwell in ignorance a voice. After all we have a president who believes that intellectual pursuits are elitist. The dumbing down of America is on the march.
