This has been a bumpy first week of being an official presidential candidate for Fred Thompson. He admitted to "not knowing" the details of Bush's social security plan, he admitted he has "no opinion" in the highly controversial Terri Schiavo case, and it was revealed that he'd served as a defense attorney for Libyan terrorists. And now, some clever person on YouTube has unearthed this footage from a 1989 episode of "Roseanne", where Thompson all to convincingly plays a sleazy boss who sexually harasses Roseanne. Unfortunately more footage wasn't available but this should give you a good chuckle.

I know Roseanne is considered to be a nutjob by many people. I think she has great instincts about people, even if she doesn't always communicate them very well. This is type-casting.

This is a cheap attempt to put negative associations in readers' minds from a part Thompson played as an actor. This tactic is way too "Sean Hannity" for me. Same goes for the Libyan terrorist defense - work Thompson did as a lawyer. I didn't like it when they did this to John Kerry, I don't like it when they do it to John Edwards, and I don't like it when you do it to Fred Thompson.

If you discover that he made a grab for Roseanne off-camera, or over-billed the terrorist, then you have a story.

I sincerely hope that Alternet readers are discerning enough to separate fallacy, even stealth fallacy, from fact.

This is a terrible eexample of attack politics

But this even more of a cheap shot than for the reasons you stated. Not only is this a TV ROLE he played as an actor the character he played did NOT sexually harass Roseanne's character. The itch he wanted scratched was she was a smart ass and showed no respect to him and was mouthy and demanding in front of other workers. The boss made Rosanne promise to be deferential and respectfull. The cynical edit the OP made, makes it "look" like it was about sexual harassment but it wasn't.

In my mind this makes the OP a deceptive liar. That is unacceptable no matter what candidate or party you are commenting on. This is the lowest of attack politics at its worst.

So we don't want Fred Thompson for any elected office, but give us a break!!! He was acting--doing his job. This is Karl Rove stuff.

He did a good job on this. He's also good as that crusty old DA on Law and Order.

In my opinion, he should stick to character acting, since there are too many bad politicians, and not as many good character actors. But it's his life, I suppose.

It's not always pretty

Those of you who see this video as unfair and Fox-like and disingenuous are too clever by half. Americans are often so gung-ho about fighting fire with fire; and, like it or not, this is just how filth like the cheney/bush/ceo/neocon cabal works. The point is, often their supporters can relate, and are thus susceptible, to these types of base tactics.

It's distasteful, I know, to have to stoop to such levels, but if you seriously want to stop the slide you country's on and get it back, you'll have to do things that you wouldn't normally do. This video - even though everyone knows it's acting (actually pretty good acting, as he makes you hate the character) - just might sway some of the lesser thinkers on the other side to rank thompson, and by extension the rest of them, as the same type of lowlife as the character - he is abusing an honest, decent worker after all. Even if it only hits them subconsciously, it can still help. And face it, right now you can use every bit of help you can get.

By the way, KUDOS AMERICANS for standing up in Washington yesterday. And don't let them bury the fact that they arrested 160 of your compatriots - you can use that.

You are feeding the whole character-is-everything mentality that is dumbing down politics and resulting in worse and worse candidates. He's an actor. I dont give a damn about his character. Who the hell knows what his real character is anyway? Judge them by their fruits.
