This film and book discuss the CIA's experimentation with using electric shock to break people down. Yet, the more important point of these works is that a broader "shock" to the systems of a people as a whole, like say 9/11, can have the kind of impact the CIA was searching for in their tests, one that breaks down a whole society and makes them so fearful they are open to nefarious suggestions.

I am sure none of this sound familiar, does it? This is very powerful stuff that can explain how a traumatized society may act, and may just explain to you why a certain former Mayor of New York mentions 9/11 4.75 times per sentence.

In any case here is a description in Naomi Klein's words--Watch the video!:

"My publisher came up with the idea of a "web trailer" but we ended up with a powerful piece of cinema instead. I never saw the film as a promotional tool for the book, or even an adaptation of it. I always saw it as a companion piece to the book, as a way to enter the same subject matter -- shock therapy, disorientation, torture -- on a different, much more emotional level. The central idea of the book is about the use of shocks to exploit people, whether an individual in a torture cell or an entire society. That is such a visual, physical idea that I felt limited by what I could do with mere words on a page -- I could argue and document but I knew that a true artist could find ways to take that argument and reach people on a deeper level. That's what Alfonso did.

When I finished the book, I sent it to Alfonso because I adore his films and felt that the future he created for Children of Men was very close to the present I was seeing in disaster zones. I was hoping he would send me a quote for the book jacket and instead he pulled together this amazing team of artists -- including Jonás Cuarón who directed and edited -- to make The Shock Doctrine short film. It was one of those blessed projects where everything felt fated."

There's an extended excerpt from Klein's new book here, including:

- The real Dick Branch: "The mantra 'September 11 changed everything' neatly disguised the fact that for free-market ideologues and the corporations whose interests they serve, the only thing that changed was the ease with which they could pursue their ambitious agenda... without a public debate or formal policy decision, contractors have become a virtual fourth branch of government."

- Revolving Door = Ka-Ching: "As Ken Minihan, former director of the National Security Agency, explained, 'Homeland security is too important to be left to the government.' Minihan, like hundreds of other Bush administration staffers, has already left his government post to work in the burgeoning homeland security industry, which, as a top spy, he helped create."

- War On Etc: "According to the Bush vision, the role of government is merely to raise the money necessary to launch the new war market, then buy the best products that emerge out of that creative cauldron, encouraging industry to even greater innovation."

- Privatised Torture Squads: "It's a dynamic ripe for abuse: just as prisoners under torture will usually say anything to make the pain stop, contractors have a powerful economic incentive to use whatever techniques are necessary to produce the sought-after information, regardless of its reliability."

horrific experiments, often on unwilling subjects (including Army personelle or university students) or on prisoners. Former President of both the American and World Psychiatric organisation, a Dr.Donald Ewen Cameron, participated in the now declassified MKULTRA and other CIA and DARPA funded experiments. Dr.Cameron, a prominent psychiatrist, particular theory was that of "Pyschic Driving" which was his attempt to "erase" a person's identity/ego and then "replace" or "rebuild" it. Unfortunately, for Cameron and the CIA minders, he experimented on people who needed real psychological help and even unwitting university students (at McGill in Canada). He was never successful (that is documented) at "rebuilding" a person and creating a "manchurian candidate" but he was able to destroy people psyche by weeks of alternating seculsion, white noise, random imaging, and lack of any sensory perception. Victims are only now, finally, getting some compensation for a lifetime of mental problems thanks to this eminent psychatrist. Then, of course, we have all the LSD, and other, experiments on subjects, including Olson who 'committed suicide' by jumping out of a closed window from a CIA saferoom in NYC while under the influence of LSD (unknowingly) his family finally has gotten compensated also--- like a few bucks make up for a father's "suicide". Many doctors and psychiatrists are even today doing experiments, helping 'extract information' from prisoners, etc for the government(s) around the world......

For the public to know what is happening and why are the last two things the masters who are running the show want. And if God is on their side everything is permitted.

It's interesting how this seems to work internally, but not externally. US and other leaders can easily control their own populations using traumatic events, or imagined ones. But trying to control a population externally (eg. Iraq, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Palestinian territories, etc.) is another matter, as Bill Maher pointed out in a previous video. I think he called it "tribalism" or something...

It's funny...all this rabid patriotic united-we-stand crap after 9/11. Yet we think other countries will welcome our attacks and invasions, call us liberators, and throw flowers at us after we bomb them. It's as if our collective narcissism brainwashes us into thinking we're the only nationalistic country on the planet.

the US is insane - their way of dealing with things has become the standard in the western world - we are now waking up to see how insane it is and where it originates from

this is one of the many reasons why the world hates the US - this was happening long before Iraq but now its become visible - its become visible to shock you into realising what a monster your nation has become its become visible to show us all that before any change can happen one first must see the need for it
thanks to Naomi et el for having the strength to speak truth to insanity however, are the occupants of the asylum to drugged up on illusion, celluloid denial and religious hype to see it ?
only time will tell
remember, these torturers are your neighbors - fellow citizens
