The clip to your right is tough, gruff George Carlin routine from his stand up special, "This Life is Worth Losing." He starts out slamming America's education system and moves on to how the corporations and business interests have Americans "by the balls." Carlin says the people that run this country want nothing more than "obedient workers" and now they want our social security money and retirement. "It's a big club and you and I aren't in it," says Carlin. Check out the video to your right for more harsh but funny truths.

George Carlin is a prophet. Not in the religious sense- in now-dead languages, including Biblical languages, "prophet" was a dual translation with "dissident intellectual". Dissidents speak truths aloud before they come to pass.

"And when they came for me? There was no one left to speak."

Carlin sees what few of us are willing to see: the United States fizzled out decades ago, replaced with a fake copy that only looks like the old U.S. Welcome to the Union of Corporate Controlled Fascist States, indeed.

Goddamn, do I need a drink now....

You, me, we're all slaves (with extremely few exceptions). Land of the free? When was the last time you did something that you REALLY wanted to do? How many of you are working for yourself? How many of you are working at the "job of your dreams" doing exactly what you want to do in life? If the internet was a window, I don't think I'd be seeing many hands go up.

I'm sorry people, but working 50+ hours a week at a job you hate just so you can pay all your loans and bills is not freedom. But hey, you've got freedom of choice right! You're totally welcome to quit your job, move into a cardboard box, and eat out of dumpsters. If that's not freedom then what is!!! God bless America.

Yes. Bill Hicks was another "prophet." I love Carlin and Hicks and get depressed every time I hear them. Boy, what a scam it all is. I suggest listening to Jello Biafra's spoken word CDs.

"Where did all the money go." JB

I pose this question. How does one go on knowing it's all a lie? Jello also asks in reference to all the poor and disenfranchised: "What are we supposed to do? Die?"

I wonder some times. It all makes me very depressed.

This kind of thing is why I left the field of Adult Education. In the USA adult education serves to make more of these subservient workers and citizens. Where is the Freirian popular education? I taught ESL (English as a Second Language), and still do a little on the side, but I couldn't find any popular education (consciousness raising, etc.) ESL in the USA. If there is any, it's few and far between. And popular education started first with literacy in Brazil, but has been used in other contexts too, and ESL is a close kin to literacy. So we teach ESL in a manner that gives us obedient immigrants and foreign students. That's how adult education is here in the USA.

Mr. Carlin is correct in much of his assessment of this country, however, he neglected to say the one thing that no one wants to hear: This country deserves EVERYTHING that happens to it. By sitting on our collective asses, while laughing and applauding people like George, we are ultimately ALL responsible for the sad and sorry mess that this country and, in turn, the world is in. It is so easy to lay blame on the Bushies and the corporations and the war-mongers for screwing things up, but hey, who let them get away with it and still do? You and me and EVERYONE else. Therefore, we are ALL deserving of whatever fate befalls us. How to change it? Stop funding the bastards! After all, they can't do it if they can't afford it. Quit buying in to the lie, whether through your corporate consumerism or your hard earned tax dollars. Don't give them the money they need to continue this rampant destruction of basic morals and ideals that everyone WANTS to believe in. Stop giving what little wealth you have left to those who have so much, it's... it's... (need to coin a new term or word or phrase). I'll tell you what it is: it's WHAT YOU DESERVE!

I agree with everything he is saying, but maybe we should remember that Carlin also did an entire act on how funny rape is. To me that discounts him immediately. I would think that this site would frown on posting anything from a man that jokes about rape no matter how much we might agree with his politics.

Carlin... truth teller

George Carlin has always spoken the truth, whether we liked it or not. But as long as people fear or are made to be fearful of their own gut instincts about life and what they hear, are we responsible for what's going on? We don't know what to think until a news station or anchor, or hollywood star tells us.

It takes personal responsibility and yes some sacrifice. But we all wait for the other guy to start first. We are made fools of over the war, food that’s not fit to eat , marches for diseases that pharmas already know how to cure.... but remember this mantra... "It is more profitable to look for a cure - than to find one"
So add that to the downward spiral we are taking.

I listened to a CD from John Taylor Gatto he made in 2000 about the real reason behind public education. How it started in Germany, and the goal was to give people just enough education/propaganda to keep them in the mines, and all the lowly jobs that the rich wouldn’t be caught dead doing. Well they’re still spitting on us. But now we know... so what’s the excuse? Well it isn’t intellectual, it’s emotional, fear based, read Mien Kampf, it’s like a right wing “how to” book. Hitler talked about how to get large numbers of people believing anything! That the “bigger the lie, the more will believe it”. And as soon as we the people catch on... you notice how the rhetoric gets louder! Danger, danger Will Robinson!!!! It works every time. So a little personal responsibility goes a long way. Also a some spiritual prayer, No not organized religion, spirituality between you and whatever and whomever you believe in. Not from anyone on a stage or an alter.

John Taylor Gatto site.

The thing the Neo-Can't are unable to grasp, because a joke has to have truth in it to be funny. Hence, the Mayfly existence of FBC's HALF HOUR COMEDY HOUR.

In the compost heap.

George Carlin, Bill Maher, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert and a tiny handful of others have been rolled into the King's palace and let loose. The dull witted monarch had no clue what he had released.

Uncle George instills doubt. A fine gift for dodgy days ahead.

If you want to scare the shit out of the corporations do not send in your payments. Let everything slide. Make them know the fear of loss. Get that clunker repaired. Do not buy new. Buy only used clothes and other stuff. Make the thrift store the new sears. Tell your damn kids NO!!! They will live. Lets hurt them where they live. The coffers of the rich are too bloated anyway. Of course you will always have people who judge others by what they buy and who gives a damn about them. Let's relearn how to live on less. Use cash a lot, it really makes you think if you do. 0nly thing we have to buy new is food. So what if your credit cards rates raise ,you are never going to pay them off anyway.Lets start sticking it to the man as often and as deep as possible. Do not go off the deep end but hang in there on the edge.

George Carlin is one of my favorite comedians. He tells it like it is. Corporations keep the standards low on education because stupid, ignorant, uneducated people are easier to control and watch. He should re-iterate his comments about corporations owning America; because they not only own America they own the world (that includes Banks of government stature).

Carlin Is A Treasure

Carlin is that special type of comic whose comedy teeters on the edge of despair, almost to the point of a rant, then pulls you back in for a laugh before pushing the envelope again. Dave Chappelle can do it to, although in a different way.

You might wonder how he manages to reach people when he is so anti-establishment. Well I suppose seen one way he is a commodity that fills a niche market (albeit a growing one). It's all about selling to a demographic. True or not, it doesn't take away from the effectiveness of what he says. They likely see it as marketing another controversial comic and controversy has always played well in comedy and has been highly marketable.

Carlin effortlessly cuts through the realities of show business with his refusal to be bullshitted and straight-up fuck you attitude. We need more people in show business like him.

I was impressed with this video and can't disagree with what he says. I do think there is too little effort in Education to actually teach children to be critical thinkers...seems to be far more important to teach them to be good little followers. Many educators are frightened by children whose responses may deviate from the scripted correct answer.

There might be an inclination to feel rather hopeless and helpless after viewing this video. I hope Carlin's attempt was to stir people up and get them to think for themselves. I think I'll start watching Carlin again...

In the middle ages, only the court fool dared speak truth to power. Anyone else who tried was killed. In that sense, George Carlin is a fool. I count Bill Maher John Stewart and Steven Colbert as fools too. Only trouble with our modern fools is that those in power aren't listening. Remember when that fool Colbert was invited to the palace to speak to the royal court? They ran him out of town and he wont be invited back. Neither will any of the other fools.
