Fox News Calls Katie Couric a Bad Mother for Reporting In Iraq

Posted by Matt Corley at 2:06 PM on August 30, 2007.

Matt Corley: Fox News repeatedly slanders Couric and criticizes her parenting skills just because she's going to Iraq to report on the war.
Fox News Calls Katie Couric a Bad Mother for Reporting from Iraq

This post, written by Matt Corley, originally appeared on Think Progress

In two separate segments yesterday, Fox News attacked CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric for reporting from the ground in Iraq, calling it "a desperate move" and asking if it was a "ratings ploy or legitimate journalism."

On Your World With Neil Cavuto, guest host Dagen McDowell featured Janice Crouse of Concerned Women for America, who characterized Couric's trip as "a clear act of desperation" by a single mother whose "priorities [are] so determined by her ambition rather than her children's welfare." Crouse pointedly accused Couric of being a bad mother for going to cover Iraq:

I would say the same thing if this were a man journalist going out there, a male anchor, because when you look at the choice she's making, she's saying my ratings are more important than my children. That's the bottom line."

Later in the afternoon, The Big Story With John Gibson hosted New York Post columnist Linda Stasi, who called Couric's trip "a desperate move" to gain "some sort of credibility." "You know and I know that she doesn't have to be there for the report," said Stasi.

During the Your World segment, law professor Susan Estrich came to the CBS anchor's defense, noting that Couric is "a journalist" and that the war in Iraq is "a really important story" that hasn't been covered "with the intensity it" deserves:

She's a journalist. This is a war. It's a really important story. It's not like she's going to camp out at Paris Hilton's house. I mean the press has been criticized for not covering Iraq with the intensity it should. And really, that's her decision.

In fact, Fox News is one of the biggest culprits of "not covering Iraq with the intensity it should." As a recent Project for Excellence in Journalism study showed, the network consistently covers the war in Iraq roughly half as much as its rivals.

Fox has attacked journalists for covering Iraq too much. In February, John Gibson accused CNN's Anderson Cooper of "news-guy snobbery" for his complaints that the death of Anna Nicole Smith was saturating the news when "there's a war on." Fox's Bill O'Reilly has claimed "CNN and MSNBC are actually helping the terrorists by reporting" often on Iraq.

FOX is silent on Iraq, while CNN is just dishonest.

A telling CNN quote:

"The benchmarks Congress has set to to judge the Iraqi government's progress include passage of legislation allocating Iraq's oil revenues, easing restrictions on former members of executed dictator Saddam Hussein's Baath Party and setting up provincial elections."

CNN cut off the complete statement, which should have been:

passage of legislation allocating Iraq's oil revenues to British and American and French oil interests

The same investment banks that are major shareholders in TWX (CNN) are the same ones that own huge chunks of NWS (FOX).

These banks are also the major holders in Chevron Texaco CVX and also in Exxon Mobil. The value of the oil corporations is quite a bit more (5-10X) than the value of the media corporations... but propaganda delivered to the homes of the majority of US citizens every night - that's priceless.

It's just a puppet show, and Katie Couric should be replaced by Minnie Mouse, and Bill O' Reilly by Mickey Mouse.

Tiresome, Pointless Attack By Fox Noise

Couric is a professional doing her job, so what's the fuss? Part of any anchor's job, by the way, is to attract viewers, so what's the problem if boosting or maintaining ratings or building her journalistic credentials is part of the reason for the trip? Oh my god! A TV anchor is adding to her experience, building her resume, and capturing viewers' attention! Who'd a thought? What's the world coming to?

This is yet another nonsensical, gratuitous attack on a news organization by Fox Noise in its continuing campaign to diminish the standing of all news sources--in the hope that the spin it passes off as news won't appear any worse by comparison.

The single mom angle doesn't cut it. Has the military made exceptions for single parents (who, by the way, are heading into much more dangerous situations than Couric is)? And if some people are too important to go to Iraq, what about all the Senators and Representatives and even GWB (like that wasn't a publicity stunt)? No, people, including single parents, take calculated risks every time they step out the front door. Couric has done just that, which is certainly her right. Others perhaps might have made different choices, which would be their right. I, for one, see nothing wrong with Couric's choice. It's hardly so wild and reckless to warrant the attention and criticism directed her way by Fox Noise.

And Military Moms?

So are the military moms serving in Iraq also bad mothers, or is that okay as long as they are serving in place of some limp-dick collegiate Young Republican dude?

Fox News and their cohorts have made a choice that the killing and maiming of Iraqi "moms" and children isn't worth reporting. No moral questions occur to them on this point.

How come it is that Couric's "defender" hardly got a chance to say a word? Not even the programme's hostess could shut the pig up.

For the Children

I am soooo glad that Fox is so concerned about "Katie's children". I really don't believe they could a rat's a** about Ms. Couric or her children. If Ms. Couric does an outstanding job I'm sure Fox will say that it's in spite of her abandoning her children. If Ms. Couric is killed they will point out that she sacrificed her children on the altar of ratings. And if she does a lousy job and comes home safe it'll be because she wouldn't get out and do a good job. In theory she can't win for losing. BUT Fox cares, they are all warm and fuzzy (sorta like a lollipop that's covered with cat hair) and that should make us all feel better shouldn't it?

Not to be a cynic, but are we supposed to think this is for real?

Am I the only one who immediately thought that this scurilous "attack" on poor dear Katie is just a ploy to gain sympathy and support for her? Her daddy "bought" her a slot on national TV, but no one has been able to get the public to accept her in Cronkite's chair. Now the big bad bullies at Fox say rude things about her, and we are all supposed to be so outraged we drop Brian Willaims and Charlie Gibson and rush over to CBS, right? Har! (I'll bet daddy called in a favor from Rupert -- or maybe it was the moguls at CBS who are starting to worry about their bad investment.)

This comment by Fox news speaks volumes about their confidence in our MILITARY. She will be protected and escorted where ever she goes just like members of Congress . Her visit will be engineered by the Military and they are not going to let a hair on her head be mussed. If she can see behind the curtain of security, to the real war , she will have achieved her goal. There is no way to imagine a war zone unless you have been there to feel and see it. I hope she gets to gain some insight as to what she reports about, every night. And I imagine her children are proud of their mother. No one would criticize Bill O' Really, for going to Iraq , now would they? Has he been yet? I do not watch Fox so I do not know. But I think it is a smashing idea. Pack your bags Bill.!!

MANY OF THE REPORTERS IN IRAQ ARE WOMEN

Not to mention the women in the military who are also mothers. This was not a well thought out criticism nor is it deserved. Countless women journalists and reporters are in Iraq all the time. It's not a secret. Thanks, ANNA

... starting to wake up to what FBC News is doing. They're beginning to get it. Good sign. FOX NEWS is false. Even worse, the lies are deadly.

They are a cancer to us and they know it.

Hopefully they will all just sit at their desks and await their war crime tribunals with an arrogant smirk.

I guess she feels if Katie Couric goes to Iraq her children might grow up like Miss Teen S. Carolina. How about better education and health care(this includes dental) for children.
