Hannity Defends Ted Nugent's Death Threats on Obama

This post, written by Steve Benen, originally The Carpetbagger Report

As a rule, writing about Ted Nugent is a bit like writing about Ann Coulter -- they're both ridiculous clowns who say stupid things to get attention. My better instincts tell me to ignore them.

But once in a while, there's a reason to highlight their stupidity. Take Ted Nugent's latest outburst, for example.

"I was in Chicago last week, I said, 'Hey Obama, you might want to suck on one of these, you punk!' Obama, he's a piece of sh*t and I told him to suck on my machine gun! Let's hear it for them. I was in New York and I said, 'Hey Hillary, you might want to ride one of these into the sunset, you worthless bitch.' And since I'm in California, how about Barbara Boxer? She might want to suck on my machine gun! Hey, Dianne Feinstein, ride one of these, you worthless whore!"
First, let's keep the context in mind. Nugent was something of a star in the '70s, but more recently, he's become a proud Republican activist who, oddly enough, routinely appears on Fox News, writes for the Wall Street Journal editorial page, and has even been recruited to run for public office under the GOP flag. (Now would, of course, be the ideal time for Bill O'Reilly to remind us that Daily Kos is a "hate site" because a few anonymous commenters wrote some intemperate remarks.)

Second, Nugent's remarks actually made the rounds fairly quickly. I naively expected conservatives to respond by a) ignoring Nugent's comments; or b) gingerly distancing themselves from the nut. I didn't expect Sean Hannity to defend Nugent and excuse the borderline-threatening remarks, but that's exactly what he did on Friday night. (via Digby)

Oh my.

Realistically, I think it's fair to say that if a Democratic activist encouraged four Republican senators to suck on machine-gun barrels, while calling the lawmakers a "piece of sh*t," a "worthless bitch," and a "worthless whore," we probably wouldn't be hearing from that activist again for a while. For that matter, no one with any kind of audience would defend the comments, and the activist would soon be persona non grata in progressive circles.

But this is a reminder that in conservative circles, there is no line to be crossed. There are no limits, and there are no consequences.

Post Script: By the way, this was debunked quite a while ago, but Hannity's argument that Obama's comments about the war in Afghanistan are somehow comparable to Nugent's lunacy is truly insane. Hannity is just too dumb for his own good.

On the August 19 edition of Fox News' Hannity's America, host Sean Hannity asserted that Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) was "bashing America" and "accus[ing] U.S. soldiers of killing innocent Afghani civilians" during an August 13 campaign appearance in Nashua, New Hampshire. In fact, as the video, which Hannity aired, makes clear, Obama criticized the shortage of troops in Afghanistan, saying: "We've got to get the job done there [in Afghanistan] and that requires us to have enough troops so that we're not just air-raiding villages and killing civilians, which is causing enormous pressure over there."
As Media Matters for America noted in response to Hannity's earlier mischaracterizations of Obama's comments, U.S. air strikes in Afghanistan -- and accounts of resulting civilian casualties -- have been widely reported in the media and have reportedly provoked criticism from Afghan President Hamid Karzai and a British commander stationed there. Additionally, as the Associated Press reported in a "Fact Check" responding to conservative attacks on Obama, "Western forces have been killing civilians at a faster rate than the insurgents." Further, in a July 7 article on NATO and U.S. air strikes reported to have killed more than 100 Afghan civilians, Reuters cited the assessment of military analysts that "a shortage of ground troops means commanders often turn to air power."
The mind reels.

You only get to threaten others so smugly...

... when your own party HASN'T failed to rebuild a devestated major urban center, run up record debt, put our nation in more danger, gotten hundreds of thousands of people killed over weapons that didn't exist and then falling back on a hopelessly naive and idiotic concept of freedom at the muzzle of a gun while ignoring a very real threat to our nation, lying to congress and the American people time after time, and having politicians one after the other get arrested for various often sexual criminal behavior.

See... you have to actually have been RIGHT about something to brag about how great and how right you are and how wrong everyone else is.

I take absolutely no pleasure in seeing this sort of sick display of a supposed "conservative" abandoning all of the principles they claim to stand for just so they can toe the line set by a few party members whose political careers should have, by all rights and by all reason been drowned in a gunny sack as soon as they were born. What is it about this administration that so easily gets people to deny everything they claim to believe and throw themselves en masse on their own swords for men who aren't even fit to lick the shoes of a beggar?

i don't get/watch FOX News, and i'm always amazed every time one of these videos makes it on to the net. Who watches these clowns? But the video does kind of provide an answer. The crowd is actually cheering Ted Nugent on when he starts making those hateful statements... The wingnuts/hate mongers/freaky fundamentalists, and other divisive elements are only as strong and relevant as the number of people egging them on.

Meh. Nugent might've taken (may still be taking?) too many drugs. In any event, I suppose he's welcome to whatever vile notion that he thinks his public servants ought to be sucking on: armpits, tires, trailer hitches, "machine guns" or what-have-you.

On the other hand, it's a little dissapointing that some people view Nugent as a gun rights champion. There are young, naive, or otherwise impressionable people out there who may associate civil liberties advocates with freakish behavior as a result of observing this desperate B-rocker behaving like a loon in order that he may try and capture a little more attention before he's done.

That sort of popular fictionalizing would be shame.

there was a time, about 30 years ago, when I thought Ted Nugent was too cool, but I was 17 at the time, and had little political awareness (and he hadn't become a Republinazi). Since he hasn't done anything musically worthwhile for many years, he has to make a living whoring himself out to whoever will pay him to be a fool. My Nugent CD's and records go in the shredder tonight.

Too bad I can't use excessive profanity on this site, because Hannity is just the biggest ass. Granted I could say this for most newscasters, especially the dumb sheep the Murdoch employs!!!! Since when was news your stupid opinion! And this whole Republican, Democrat panel discussion needs to be done away with. Its not about either or, its the isses, which quite frankly, the REAL issues are just starting to be discussed. Thank goodness Barack and Edwards have some sense in them to talk about "corporate democrats" and what corporate money does to politics. Can't Amy Goodman run for prez? I mean someone with some wit, knowledge and candor.

Ted Nugent: Contradiction and anti-intellectualism x 10

I wonder how a guy who sang Great White Buffalo can be so angry, so violent toward the party that MAY do something to protect wildlife, so that he can hunt them with his bow and arrow. His Republican counterparts, however, would allow mass extinction, if they can find a way to profit from it.

Nonetheless, Ted's a one issue bugaboo. He lacks insight, and he caters to crowds of adorning, but poorly educated, fans. But, I defend his right to say whatever he feels he needs to say. God bless him, or something like that. Indeed, let him ride his Great White buffalo into extinction.

If you said the same thing Ted said and switched out the names of Obama, Hillary and Boxer for president Bush....you'd be living in GITMO.

And notice that Ted knocks an immigrant, women and a black.

I did my part, just like the neocons did with the Dixie Chicks. I called my radio station and told them to stop playing Nugent. They said...."who?"

Seriously, if Ghostfacekillah, 50 Cent (who i hate...but still), or any other rapper had waved a glock around and told Mitt Romney to suck on the gun Sean Hannity would be up in arms and Bill O'Rielly would try to bring down the entire genre of hip-hop with his bare hands. This bullshit of the highest order.

Comments:

1. Other than stating the obvious, what's wrong with saying our troops kill civilians and bomb villages? It's the perfect commentary on wing nuts: truth and reality offend them.

2. The "liberal" doesn't represent the liberal side very well. Of course, that's how these shows work: they tend to bring on hot-headed cliches to represent the liberal side, and never let them get a word in, so they get frustrated and start screaming and hollering.

3. Apparently, Nuge doesn't drink or do drugs, so that's him talking, and nothing else...He should really have that gap in his teeth fixed, so he doesn't whistle and spit when he talks...Or better yet, just wire his mouth shut.

4. The blond seems amused to sit there watch the boys fight. To summarize her contribution to the discussion: "Ted Nugent is like, a total lunatic, okay?"...Someone needs to get her to a mall or a nail salon before it's too late.

I was appalled at the lunacy of Ted Nugent’s comments but not that much surprised. The surprise was the charade that Ted Nugents used as a platform for his deep sided hatred and disrespect for the Office of the President and legislative leaders. Senators Obama and Mrs. Clinton are Presidential candidates and members of the US Congress.

The platform he presented was on the notion that he speaks for the NRA and the Republic Party conservatives is ridiculous. In his reference to Senator Obama, he threatened a legislative member and presidential candidate with immeninant bodily harm, which in itself violates our laws of making threats to government officials, be they in benign gestures or inflammatory remarks or actual threats to do harm or kill them.

Gun control was not an issue here, in that Senators Obama or Clinton were speaking about Gun control legislation for or against it, but Ted Nugent vile remarks were thinly designed as a vale to give the impression that he represents a significant majority of those constituents.

Personally, I have no problem with Mr. Nugent exercising his First Amendment Rights of Free Speech, but he was clearly advocating the harm of an elected official. Had he said in his speech that the object of Mr. Obama mouth should be somewhere place on one of his bodily anatomies, front or rear, that in and of it’s self is vile and repugnant, but not necessarily injurious or that such an event could be construed as advocating a result to end Mr. Osama’s life.

Mr. Nugents should now be looked at as a person of interest by federal law enforcement, primarily the FBI and Secret Service, as a violent person advocating (or engaged in the excitement of others in) the harm and death of a government official. In that respect, he should no longer be allowed to promote or advertise such death threats in any venture, be it public or private in the future.
