Censoring Keith Olbermann's Countdown

Lots of people were disappointed because local stations jacked us all around. "After the game" means, well, "after the game." First I was told it would air before the game. I had found stories that said "afterwards." But I couldn't get any time confirmed. However, when "Countdown" was preempted for local news after the game it was so typical of local programming. Then "Dateline" aired instead of "Countdown." Then, finally Keith.

Keith Olbermann's "Countdown" is a great show on MSNBC and local affiliates shouldn't have interested viewers and fans of "Countdown" scurrying around trying to find when the show is to air.

And when reports say "after the game" it doesn't mean two hours afterwards, at least not in my book. It was worth the wait, but it shouldn't have been aired as late as it was: 10:00 p.m. on a Sunday night, with fans trying to find the times, while others got only half of "Countdown," with others having none of it at all or way too late on a school night. This previous post outlines the silliness that viewers were subjected to across the country, from Baltimore to Spokane and points in between and beyond.

As far as I can tell right now, lots of NBC affiliates went out of their way to put "Countdown" out of reach of viewers.

I contacted the news desk and the person there did not care that Countdown was not being carried and stated the Steelers show was more important. I’m asking everyone to call 412-237-1100 and ask for the General Manager or email him at: gm@wpxi.com. There is no excuse for this but sadly that is the way it goes in Pittsburgh most of the time. - C&L reader, via John Amato of C&L

No, it's not a conspiracy or the end of the world, but viewers shouldn't have to chase down the debut of a great show. Yes, programming for ratings rules. But many NBC affiliates made no effort whatsoever to inform viewers or to make it easy to find "Countdown" and west coast reports that it would air after the game didn't tell the half of it. Local KVBC in Vegas could have cared less if viewers found "Countdown." Many others followed the same routine.

But at least at the end of the day -- and I mean the end -- finally Keith aired. He was great. As usual. Too bad all the NBC affiliates didn't appreciate what Olbermann could offer their station and the audience they serve. It could have been a win-win for everyone.

I now return you to great guest bloggers who will be filling in for me this week, maybe even a surprise or two. I'm officially back on break (though I'll likely check in again).

Oh, and for you wingnuts who don't get it, when a show is supposed to air "after the game" or is preempted because of time zone, you still should be able to find it and know when it's going to show up. Airing "Countdown" at 10:00 p.m. is not only "after the game," it was after local news and "Dateline," not to mention past many people's bedtime on a Sunday night. Nuff said.

Good night, and good luck.

P.S.: Ignorant wingnuts are thanking the stations. This email puts it all in context:

Ms. Howfield, since Taylor Marsh posted your e-mail on her Web site, you’ll probably be getting messages from both of her fans (her cat and her hairdresser), complaining that Keith Olbermann’s program wasn’t aired before the Eagles/Steelers game.

On behalf of those who still love America AND football, thanks for not forcing Olbermann’s left-wing anti-American propaganda down our throats just because we love football.

(Ms. Marsh, now is the time to look away since you’re not going to like this comment)

Thanks and God Bless America!

Tim K.

It's clear that Keith's honesty is unwelcome on a corporate agenda. He IS effective, and that's why they're pulling him off. He's a hero and they are garbage, trash.

Olbermann's wonderfully bracing and even courageous commentary on MSNBC is the blast of fresh oxygen the media needs now more than at any time since the FCC began to surrender accountability to the public with an obeisance to Corporate bean counters over the civic responsibility for telling truth to power.
Of course he is a threat...and I feel he does indeed speak out in my behalf and that of millions of people in the US who can see as clearly the real threats to our republic and the Constitution under the boot of the Bush/Cheney reign. There's not many who can match him. In the MSM, I feel he stands with Bill Moyers, although quite different in style or approach and certainly demeanor, but he gives the public what is vitally needed....candor and insight and questioning of authority, not kissing up to it, as is so obvious with most talking heads.

Keith was not shown here until 10:00 p.m. and I'm on the west coast. I love Keith Olbermann and am just pleased that he is still on the air! If it were not for Keith I would Never hear the truth of what is really going on.Olbermann is such a departure from all the talking heads, that are out of touch with reality. I fear every week that Keiths show will be pulled but he is still here. Freedom of choice is still here so enjoy it while you can America.

America needs all the blessings it can get, since it is being ruined by the people who ostensibly run it.

we dont get MSNBC

Even if you have digital cable in our area, you do not get MSNBC. You get FOX, CNN, CNBC, etc., and hundreds of other channels but not MSNBC. We emailed our cable company about it and were told that we do get that channel, but the number they said it would be on is the soap opera channel. We called about it and the company rep was almost rude, as if she didnt understand why somebody would be calling about not getting MSNBC. She actually said the reason our city does not get MSNBC is because nobody has 'requested' it. Apparently not a single person has asked about not getting MSNBC, ever. And we are to assume there is not any one that wants it and so that is why there is no MSNBC. I requested it but not surprisingly they have not added it to their line up. Comcast sucks.

So, last night I was surprised and glad to see Countdown on NBC which is the only reason to care at all about not getting MSNBC. Im not surprised, but none the less cant help but feel annoyed there would be opposition to Olbermann appearing on NBC. It testifies to the fact the show is actually pretty good.

"Censoring"? Please don't waste my time by putting headlines on articles that don't reflect the content.

I like Keith Olbermann as much or more than the next guy, but I don't have time to read an article about him being "CENSORED" that's actually a complaint about network affiliate scheduling.

Come on now.

I don't watch local TV here in Okie Dokie land because of the trashy content but have msn as an ISP so get nbc news. I've noticed of late that they have had things related to the Iraq war and the Washington mafia that they would not have had the balls to print a year or two ago. But now that Bush is down the tubes with a larger portion of the public and Iraq is an ever- expanding cesspool, msnbc is grabbing these events like a hungry dog on a meat wagon.

I was wondering about the "football crowd" watching Oberman before the game. And YES, I agree with the post regarding Alternet's headline "Censoring Keith Olbermann's Countdown. " I don't need headlines like that in my life, unless they're true! In this case it doesn't appear to be true.

but don't be surprised if this isn't the start of a trend. You know the MSM wants him gone!

I watch Keith every evening on MSMBC but pleasantly suprised that network television was about to start airing a program that speaks truth to power. When I turned the television on and the game was on instead, I knew I was being gamed. Of course network television is run by a bunch of Repug slugs who are so afraid of actually having to say or even watch somebody else say what is really true. We should have expected some kind of trick just to get people to watch their pathetic attempt at programing for everyone. Football, network news and dateline. Yeah, that's telling your viewers the real deal. That's giving them the facts. Yeah right.

do you seriously think that some time shifts in programming due to an overtime football game is purposeful censorship? i think olberman expresses some good opinions, but this is making something out of nothing. focus on the real culprits in washington.
