On the first episode of this season of Real Time with Bill Maher, actor Tim Robbins and Bill Maher (joined by NPR's Michel Martin) totally obliterate Dick Cheney's number one fan, writer Stephen Hayes. Hayes still insists that there was a relationship between Al Qaeda and Iraq in spite of all the evidence. Maher has a great bit about how 9/11 actually changed nothing (taxes weren't raised, there was no draft etc..etc..). Meanwhile, Robbins makes a great point about how these people who are responsible for the deaths of thousands are still being allowed to determine public policy and he holds Hayes to account for perpetuating the lie about Saddam's involvement in 9/11. "The American people would have never sanctioned this war if they had the facts," says Robbins. It's going to be a great season. Check out the video to your right for more.

Iraq never was a threat to America and the White House knew it the entire time.

Tim was beautiful and I greatly thank him. Bill knows the score and had the facts. Steven is a terrible reporter .

This whole Iraq war was about lies and deception. There were no mistakes. Cheney and Bush do not care what facts about their crimes come out because they know no one will hold them accountable. The Bush administration knows they will get away with war crimes. They know they will destroy the United States of America and our military. They know this because that is the plan. This is the New World Order.

Get out of Iraq now. All of our troops and politicians out. Out - today. This war was about Empire and oil. What the elite, government nuts are doing over there, they will do to us here.
It is only a matter of time. The elite civilians are destroying our army. Our top Generals have taken early retirement and left the forces so they can speak out about the terrible situation our military is in. The public needs to listen.

Cheney runs everything, although he is not the one on top. The people need to wake up. Do not expect mainstream media to help inform us of the truth because they are in on this to the max.

...so why wasn't that mentioned at all? And now, the neocons are spending millions of bucks still pushing the big lie, that there was a connection, that they (the Iraqis) were the ones who attacked us and we all know it's a lie, so where's the rebuttal- or is it considered unnecessary? This is why we must defeat the warmongering liars. Despite all the evidence of global warming, they're still pushing for control of Iraq's oil. That is The Mission. there is no other. But more oil is severely contraindicated- it is the cause, not the cure, of global warming.

Dennis Kucinich is the only one I trust. He never gets any media time. But the president has already been decided. The people think they have a choice. Our electoral process is totally broken. The media will feed us the chosen one. Nothing is done by chance in politics. Only a few elite rule and appoint.

We all know that Saddam himself was so fearful that someone would attempt to take him out, he didn't even trust his own family. Stephen, do you really expect us to believe that he trusted Al Qaeda enough to share any of his power with them? My God, ENOUGH already. You lied then and you are lying now...and please, don't insult us by suggesting it was a mistake and not an out and out lie! THEY KNEW BETTER. THEY LIED. What a man! He was brilliant, and so was Bill Maher. That Steven Hayes... what a disaster of a person. It must be excruciatingly difficult to lie to oneself enough to write a book such as the crap he penned. Ol' dead-eye dick himself probably thinks it's hilarious. The madministration knew exactly what they were doing when they decided to invade Iraq, and lied to Congress. If that dope Hayes can't see that, there is something wrong with him. I loved it when Tim or Bill mentioned that even the shrub had admitted that Saddam and 911 were not connected. That was a really good show - Hayes was completely cowed.

The NPR 'expert', Michel Markin, is, in my opinion, worse than Hayes...
Posted by: thoughtcriminal on Aug 25, 2007 1:36 PM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Why? Look at the dirty little propaganda methods she's using - "forget about the past - we need to focus on what's going on now".

That's the NPR memory hole for you. They do produce transcripts of their old shows - but you've gotta pay $4 a transcript.

Stephen Hayes is obviously a Cheney tool and a blatant liar - there's no doubt in that. The NPR reporter on the other hand, has 'third-party credibility'...

Look at her attempts to protect the Administration: "Why is the emphasis on the question of whether it was a lie or not? Can't we say that it was an honest mistake? Why the emphasis on lying?" - Just an effort to protect NPR's credibility.

Look - that's classic corporate soft-spoken PR. It plays as counterpoint to Stephen Hayes comments, which are obviously just straight BS - but the agenda that this NPR reporter, Michel Malkin, is serving is exactly the same as the one that Stephen Hayes is serving.

It's a corporate attempt to frame the debate and to push the notion that "we really did believe Saddam had WMDs". Listen to the pleading tone of that shameless 'journalist'. "An honest mistake...pleaase...we made an HONEST mistake."

NPR was one of the cheerleaders for war - over and over, they presented Bush apparatchiks as reliable sources, and ignored all others. The only people they appeal to anymore are clueless baby boomers who don't understand that NPR has changed and now stands for "National Privatized Radio".

Just ask yourself this: if NPR is really 'public radio' then why do they charge $4 per transcript? Those are US tax dollars that go to producing those transcripts, after all.

The answer is simple - they don't want people looking over what they've said in the past. That's the Orwellian memory hole strategy in full effect. These are the guys who were caught training US 4th Army Psyops interns as well...

I expect the Weekly Standard to stick to their "party line" because they are the group that helped hatch the plan to go into Iraq starting in 1998 along with Wolfowitz, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Pearle et al. What I don't understand is how Michelle Martin of NPR can be so ignorant about the post 9/11 process that got us into Iraq. There is so much evidence that the Neo-cons were looking for an excuse to invade Iraq, witness reports by Paul O'Neil, Richard Clark and several others that immediately after 9/11 the administration was obsessed with Iraq in spite of 15/19 hijackers being from Saudi Arabia. It's a well-known story. I blame in part reporters in the main stream who were fooled by all the false propaganda about WMD including the absurd idea that Saddam Hussein was capable of exploding a nuclear weapon in the US in Bush's state of the union address.

And it appeared that way because of the lack of media coverage of the millions in this country and the many millions world wide! C-SPAN was the only place to hear the speeches and see the people in the US and all over the world. I just could not believe that there was hardly a word said about the protests. Maybe if the journalists did their "real" job of investigating and informing people, we would not be in this mess. So much for corporate media. I have yet to figure out how so many of us really knew the lies being spread before the war started. It's like Tim Robbins said, "How can we rely on the people who f****d everything up be able to "fix" it now?

I would like to think that these people who are so determined to stick by their story that 9/11 was tied to Iraq have some form of conscience. I don't think they do. They will continue to lie to themselves and anyone who will listen to them until the day they die, happy and old in their beds, having watched YouTube re-runs of themselves sticking up for the greatest democratic leader who ever lived, George Bush, dreaming pleasant dreams of the halcyon days of American Empire.

They never have and never will hear the whispers of the countless foreign dead crying out for justice. Those voices are left for the ears of our grandchildren.

Much as I admire Tim I felt that he fell into the "slogan trap", perhaps it is the actors need to engage with an audience. I felt that the lady had more cogent contributions to make. She made the point that the invasion is illegal, she also allowed that the intel could have been a mistake, which is possible, it is using whilst knowing it to be wrong that is criminal.
She also pointed out that the issue that must be debated is what can be done now which is rarely addressed.

Tim and Bill are both stupid. I don't care for either one. I don't like Stephen either. This whole agruement was pointless and a waste.

Why are people still getting butt hurt about the WAR? Listen, you can't change the fact that Bush sent our men there. Bush is a dumbass and Im sure most will agree, but then again, if all of you hate him so much, why was he re elected? Just imagine the mess we would be in if Kerry or Gore were President, they would be running around with their heads up their asses, wondering what to do. I think it would be a lot worse than it is. Gore would be lying about something, just like he is coning people into buying carbon offsets. What a joke. And Kerry is just dumb, and there is no need to explain him.

People need to get off their hight horse, and deal. Things happen.

Also, if people have a problem with the war and plan on joining the military, don't join the military. There are other options in life. Don't depend on that being your life. All you have to do is try, and you can live a good life doing a different job. I think its sad, that some people just go into the military for the "bonuses" that keep increasing. Money isn't everything, especially if you are going to be sent to Iraq. its not like you will be able to spend it for anything you really want, when you are there.

Anyways. That not my point.
Point is.....This was a pointless agruement.
Tim will always be a complete igornant fool.....just like Susan Saradon.
And Bill.....don't even get me started.

Thats my rant.....

And just you so you know, Im wasn't trying to offend anyone by my comments. Im just stating my opinion. So don't start leaving hate comments. Just take it in, and deal. Thanks.

Stephen Hayes' insistence that compared to Baghdad, parts of Iraq are "relatively peaceful" is like insisting that compared to Atlantis, the flood-ravaged areas in the midwestern US are "relatively dry."

So, we know that there were lies about the WMD's and the justification for the war.

Now it is time to get out and start making repairs.

The United States has bombed Iraq back to the stone age. It needs to fix the problem without taking another life.

American's are losing their jobs because the Corporations are trying to make more money than they deserve. Our own people are out of work because they are either fighting a war for the corporations or looking for new ways to make a living.

This "Christian" nation that is pro life has chosen (pro choice) to fight a war so that the Pentagon can get its fuel cheap.

We are encouraging people with money to spend their money to support war because war is big business. It is the most profitable business in the world today. Because of this, there is no reason to stop fighting and conserving our planet and life.

Saddam and al-Qaeda
Posted by: fanny666 on Aug 27, 2007 12:17 PM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
To the extent that "al-Qaeda" is or ever was a cohesive group, it DID have a pre-war presence in Iraq. Ansar al-Islam was based in Northern Iraq, in the Kurdish region that Saddam hadn't controlled for decades (this is why he gassed the Kurdish city of Halabja, the Kurds there were rebelling, and he never was able to bring the North under control). Ansar al-Islam was commited to overthrowing Saddam, who was a secular leader considered to be an infidel by radical Islamists.

Where the rightwing constantly repeats falsehoods is by insinuating that *being in* Iraq constitutes "a relationship" (which is also a meaningless phrase... FDR has "a relationship" with Hitler). Saddam was a notorious murderer of radical Muslim groups, and bin Laden had issued a Fatwa (religious edict) calling for his overthrow or death. Where the Left repeats falsehoods is by saying al-Qaeda was never in Iraq before we invaded... they were, they were there trying to overthrow Saddam.

They weren't working together, they were enemies.

I have also seen rightwingers make the argument that Ansar al-Islam carried out attacks against the British in Northern Iraq, and therefore must be on Saddam's "side". Ansar al-Islam also carried out attacks against the Kurds... these are violent religious crazies, they think everybody is an infidel. It does not mean they were allied with Saddam.

There's been so very much propaganda spread it is hard for people to stay right -on track.

But over all, enough has been said on the rhetorical rehashing of facts that we know whom is guilty to the teeth of crimes against humanity. Everyone should stay primarily focused on impeachment. Forget the election. That will happen any way.
But most important is that these bastards are jailed before they get a way with mass murder. Then everyhting will fall in place.

disappointed over Maher's lack of prep

Current rating: 2    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Maher should have slammed Hayes when he brought up the so-called counter-quote from the 911 Commission Report that Hayes alleges directly supports the connection between Iraq and 911. Maher claimed to have the quotes right there on that piece of paper he folded in half and put away. Bad prep. If you're going to use a quote on teevee against a propaganda specialist, you'd better be prepared to go the full round with them and that means having counters to the obfuscations of the propagandist.

Maher should have slammed Hayes again when Hayes cited to that 1997 "captured" document allegedly "found" in Iraq after the invasion claiming that the iraqis (in effect confessed) that there was a relationship with Al Qaeda. Maher should have demanded to see those documents (chances are they a) don't actually say what Hayes claims they say or b) the documents don't even exist or are fraudulent).

Goons are always willing to cite to things that they never have to cough up. Reasonable people have to be willing to shut them down if they don't. Otherwise you're not calling the liars out on the carpet. This is precisely why the Chimp-Emperor gets to stay in power because none of the talking heads do enough prep to engage them on a factual level. I swear, this country is so f*cked up because one has to be an attorney with adroit cross-examination skills just to engage in honest discourse. The BS level is so damned thick everyone is choking on it.

On Tim vs. Maher, Tim's statements are consistent and come from an intuitive mindset (which Americans detest for some idiotic or myopic reason) while Maher's come from the linear thinker mindset, of a guy who was part of the drumbeat back in 2003. How soon folks forget what people say on teevee. The latter mindset is why we have folk like the NPR person and that's how tools like Hayes get to have jobs.

while Bill Maher is spot on in his treatment of the Administration and his views on the Iraq war, that shouldn't obscure his pseudo-libertarian leanings or his disgusting misogyny. don't let Bill Maher's more grotesque opinions slink under your radar.

Robbins & Maher vs CORPORATE CRIME STATE

How interesting to see the usual lies and deceptions pumped by so-called “experts” Hayes and NPR’s Markin – both transparent disinfo shills for the corporate crime mob that palmed off 911 COVER-UP and its faux “war on terror” from the start.

What is most revealing in the clip is a quote by Hayes on Saddam from 911 “Commission” COVER-UP con stooge Thomas Kean as though any of the endless lies from the 911 snow job is worth the paper it’s counterfeited on.

Neither Robbins nor Maher picked a bone with this toxic 911 propaganda trash. A brainwash campaign that has virtually turned the world inside out to produce even more of a Corporate Monopoly Fascist State at home and a “war on terror” killing field worldwide.

look.... I think this war is dirty, but come on.... Tim Robbins as your saviour? He needs to get all of his facts straight. You can't tell the American people that 400k civilians have died in Iraq, in reality even the most biased anti-war web sites are reporting less than 80k civilian deaths, most by jihadists and other terrorist factions. Tim had plenty of things to say that were so right on, but I think sometimes he lets his emotions overtake the facts.
