Things are going gang-busters for Blackwater, the world's premiere private army. They've got a nice chunk of the booming security business in Iraq -- the estimated 180,000 private contractors now exceeds the number of troops in the country and, as Jeremy Scahill points out on the front page, firms like Blackwater are "flush with profits."

But that's only a tiny slice of the pie: Blackwater recently introduced its own armored vehicle, the Grizzly Armored Personnel Carrier; Blackwater Airships is building a remotely-piloted vehicle; the company's global air service, Presidential Airways, holds a secret facility clearance from the DoD -- I'm sure they have nothing to do with any extraordinary rendition -- and the mercenary outfit recently announced that it was starting a private intelligence firm to rival the CIA.

It's a great time to be an unaccountable killer in a three-piece suit!

And the company's training operations are spreading. From its headquarters and primary training facility in North Carolina -- you can get some excellent sniper training there, I hear -- to "Blackwater North" in Mount Carroll, Illinois. And now the firm is trying to open a sprawling new training facility in California.

Specifically, in tiny Potrero, California, a berg in San diego county with a population of fewer than 1,000.

What exactly does the infamous war profiteer want to drop the following in the middle of an idyllic piece of the California countryside? Glad you asked ...

Blackwater intends to build another of its private city states consisting of 824 acres, replete with 360 staff and students, 15 firing ranges, a helipad and a heavy vehicle operator's course the length of 10 football fields.
Not surprisingly, the mercenary company is meeting some resistance, which started with community leaders in the small town but is now growing into a state-wide campaign.

The video to your right is a report -- a damning one -- by a local NBC affiliate. Blackwater was none to pleased with the broadcast, and has mobilized (that usually means "hired") an "astro-turf" network to bombard the station with complaints about how the report was un-American, anti-Capitalist and whatever else.

If you want to help push back, you can. The good folks at the Courage Campaign have organized a petition, and they're collecting signatures to send to the Governator, Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein asking to keep Blackwater's mercenary operations out of California. If you have a minute, consider signing the petition.

Digg!

Sign the petition and help them write up the Blackwater 'enemies list' of those

who need to be targeted, monitored, and watched. You don't think Blackwater will gain access to this list? Keep in mind that these people thrive on paranoia. People against them will be targeted. (I'm not talking about, yet, 'termination with extreme prejudice') but little things like:
1) not getting approved for a mortage
2) getting your credit rating ruined
3) getting 'caught' with illegal porn on your computer
4) getting audited in your business (or personal) taxes
5) getting put on terrorist 'watch lists' and 'no fly lists' making travel, banking, job seeking very difficult
6) secret, or embarassing, emails/conversations somehow reaching your friends, spouse, boss, rival firms, etc.

Remember these companies have TONS of information on people. They, and their government friends, have access to your cell phone, landline phone, banking data, credit data, health information, ss information, job information, travel history, and, in some cases, your fingerprints and DNA. There are data bases, data-mining, secret courts, wiretaps, Echelon projects, etc all collecting information on YOU. Be careful. The people who are working for private contracting firms (and many in the 'regular' military) will be the shock-troops and future police officers in your city.......

A note on AK's fearmongering

This is really a sign of desperation on the part of Republican and military contractor interests. Usually, the military-industrial complex glides silently along, but due to the blatant outrages, they're now being attacked from all sides.

Take the recent successful efforts by Tri-Valley CARES to keep the National Biowarfare Center out of California, despite the endeavors of the University of California and Battelle Memorial Institute to keep it there. See Northern California Communities Defeat Bio-Warfare Agent Research Proposal at Livermore Lab Site 300, July 2007.

These strategies work, and that's why the troll in the above comment is posting fear - in an attempt to dissuade you from taking any action.

By the way, the research and work that Jeremey Scahill did on private military contractors is outstanding, and has opened many people's eyes. How about a similar expose of Battelle Memorial Institute, the leading biowarfare military contractor in the United States and Canada?

Meet Amerika's Gestapo

The "dominionist" Christofacists are gearing up for a domestic cleansing operation. But they've got the same problem Hitler did: they can't be sure Army generals (not to mention the increasingly dumped-on rank and file) will be so enthusiastic about potential "End Times" ops. So they're hedging the bet with a shadow military.

Meanwhile, the "Christian Embassy" is busy infiltrating the Pentagon, apparently with internal approval. Evidently, evangelist zeal is now an OER officer promotion criteria.
Alternet report is at:
http://www.alternet.org/blogs/video/58866/

Let's not forget that "border patrol" agents can also be used to keep us IN.

For more on Christofascist 'dominionism," see Information Clearinghouse's report at:

Lots of issues

Disclaimer, I have long believed (paranoid that I am) that the rise of corporate warriors (mercs) in the US will enable corporations, not just wealthy individuals, to suppress a open revolt by fed workers. Granted some of the draws upon the oppression of the labor movement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

One big issue is the post Katrina presence in Louisiana. If FEMA is hiring them, then I assume they are representing the government. But if private individuals are ALSO hiring them, then how is someone they stop supposed to know who they represent, government vs private individual.

Regarding the reporting, I think the video clip was generally well done, and surprising long for a (I assume) local report. But I have two quibbles:

* a quick google map search of Mt Carroll IL shows that is about 2 hours west of Chicago, but the report said based in Chicago.

* 864 acres is about 1.3 square miles. Large, but not huge. 10 football fields is 3000 feet, or about 0.57 miles in length. Both seemed strange as ways to describe the size. I always think acreage is goofy way to describe area, especially large areas. And I think .6 miles in length doesn't sound as scary as 10 football fields. I don't fault Joshua for reporting the words used.

I would not want this near me, nor do I support or care for mercs in anyway shape or form.

The only reason I can think of to train private armies in the US is that it will be allowed. Certainly it would be cheaper and easier to train such in the Mexican desert or in Paraguay where the Shrub is building his hideaway. Reagan's private army was in Guatemala, right? Or was it Honduras? And since we allowed Reagan to have a private army as well as a public army, I guess it's a plan whose time has come.

But maybe the army owners don't find those governments as easy to manipulate as American governments? In America they would be protected by law, thereby enabling them to break the law in other parts of the world?

It's the age of piracy revived. In the absence of world order, the robbers rule. Sign me up--on the petition, that is.

Let them build their base in Dubai

Since they've moved their HQ to Dubai, let them build their facilities in their new home country. We don't need any foreign military establishments operating in the USA.

The very presence of mercenary militias on this planet virtually guarantees that new wars will be started routinely and in an off-hand fashion any time the death and suffering appears to be slowing down.

Maintaining a standing army in peace time is an expensive necessity for a major political power; we pay people to stand ready for war because we must. Who will be paying the mercenary army when there are no battles to be fought? A profit-driven enterprise cannot allow its workers to sit idle at great expense; the inclination will be to create marketing opportunities for their product by starting new conflicts or inflaming existing trouble spots.

Blackwater does not offer any products this world needs. Every civilized nation should expel them or bar them from entering their borders, starting with the US.

The folks in Dubai might want to consider whether it's in their best interest to allow hired assassins and dealers in death to operate in their country. Violence (for a price), invites violence in return.

How cowards we were ?Its Bush, its Rove, its Cheney.

My friends.it was us,all of us.The only people who did stand

us were a pile of maricones, sissies.

Why we complain now,the day the gop order us to make a lane to get screw,we will fight for been the first one.

Mt. Carroll is about 50 miles from my home town and 90 miles from where I live. When did this happen?

These people sure work quietly. Anybody have any more information about this?

No Private Armies on US soil.

A private army roaming the street of the US seems like another Orwellian concept. Yes Blackwater was in New Orleans with Halliburton before the National Guard. Many police forces in this country already have the attitude that they are here to Enforce the law. Not serve and protect. When we give a elite group of men power over our life and death we are playing with fire. I remember when security guards where not allowed to carry firearms. Who is the enemy. Us. Last time I checked I think the Constitution says something about private armies.

Dianne Feinstein as an ally in the fight against slimebag war profiteers?...that's interesting. Isn't her husband one of the "fortunate few" who landed big contracts in Iraq for his engineering firm? Lucky Dianne, having her cake and eating it too...freedom fighter and war profiteer all wrapped up in one fat little package.

The people must get Blackwater out of California

We are no longer a democracy that is a fact. So what are we? When thugs like Blackwater are training our police departments, you better run for cover.

What is happening in America? Who is controlling America? The people should have something to say. Right now Bush is going to Canada to nail down the SPP (Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America) August 20/21. The Canadian citizens are trying to stop it. Americans don't even know what is going on. I called several senate and congress members. They do not know anything. By the way this is the North American Union I am talking about. Bush's Brain may have quit, but Bush is still destroying this country.

This picture only gets darker. Blackwater is not where we want our country to go. We have an army. Bring them home now.
