Cable TV Gushes Over Rove's Dismal Legacy

Posted by Matt Corley at 6:01 AM on August 14, 2007.

Matt Corley: CNN, MSNBC and Fox News repeatedly call Rove a "genius" and a "mastermind", but rarely point out the damage he was wrought on America's political system.

As soon as Karl Rove's departure from the White House was announced yesterday morning, there was no shortage of talking heads to appear on TV to lavish praise on him. On Fox News, former White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card called Rove "a superstar," CBS White House Correspondent Bill Plante described him as "the mastermind behind everything," and on MSNBC, Chris Matthews declared "generally, where there's brains, there's Rove."

While Rove is undoubtedly a skilled campaign tactician, the hyperbolic image of him as a political genius overlooks his record of bungled political predictions, a series of policy failures and the damage he has wrought on America's political system.

ThinkProgress has put together a highlights reel of the breathless adoration for Rove. Watch it to your right.

Conservative blogger Andrew Sullivan argues, "Rove is one of the worst political strategists in recent times. He took a chance to realign the country and to unite it in a war - and threw it away in a binge of hate-filled niche campaigning, polarization and short-term expediency."

Washington Post's Dan Froomkin adds, "After years of being lauded as a political genius, Rove nevertheless leaves his party in worse shape than he found it, with his boss profoundly discredited in the eyes of the American people."

UPDATE: Huffington Post has video of the Boy Genius's tearful goodbye from yesterday morning.

He is the mastermind of the horrible condition you see this nation in today. If you find nothing wrong with the erosion of liberty, lack of honesty, lack of transparency, lack of accountability, endless war, vulnerability to terrorist attacks, alienation from traditional allies, and an economy that is in the toilet for everyone but the rich.... then worship Karl Rove.

Rove personifies the republican's fear of true democracy as the nation's founders saw it. They replace democracy with the philosophy of winning at any cost. Much like Reagen Rove's legacy will be whitewashed by numerous hagiographers. This man is used to leavin gin disgrace and failure from being fired twice from the first Bush's campaign for leaking information to Novak. He was a competent campaign manager for Shrub but failed in his sole job afterwards which was to maintain a majority in congress not to mention his subersion of the rule of law and democracy.

MSM worships power. Rove had and used power powerfully.

Winning is all that matters in politics and business. Rove is a winner; that's all. He's also trash, and the personification of evil. He belongs with the Nazis.

MSM worshipped Hitler until the US named him an enemy. Only journalists care what MSM thinks. MSM's track record matches Rove's.

There have been abundant other *Roves* in American political history. Remember who killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel where Hamilton refused to fire his weapon? Hamilton died and Burr lived. No one remembers Burr.

Burr lost the presidency to Tom Jefferson by a single tie-breaking vote. Burr saw government as the road to personal wealth. He was a scoundrel with power, just like Rove. History forgets such, except as foils for our heroes.

She compressed one heap'o flattery into her sound bite.

She gushed how [Turd Blossom] richly earned the time he would at last be able to spend "with his family" AND (in the same breath) all the money he would be making on the lecture circuit (will Turd Blossom be taking his family along?).

So the corporate media served its purpose -- indoctrinating/innocluating the proles with the notion that a failed war criminal should reap his spoils anyway.
