Uh...Chris. Newsflash: people of all ages, income levels, and social registry access have something in common. Be it grandmas or grandpas, old veterans or recent ones, mothers or daughters, husbands, wives, or fiances (as the case may be), liberal, conservative and everywhere in between, they are all supremely disgusted. They are all tired of other people's children paying the price for George Bush's failures. As Digby says:

David Shuster was on Hardball earlier interviewing some of the Move-On folks who are coming out to the capitol to protest Republican obstructionism and support Harry Reid's all nighter. And what was the first thing out of Chris Matthews' mouth?

Well it's certainly a wholesome looking crowd for an anti-war bunch.

Apparently he was expecting to see some long haired college kids burning bras and taking over the ROTC building, which isn't a huge surprise. It's just the Washington establishment's irrational fear of hippies rearing it's anachronistic head again....

Being ticked off at the myriad failures of the Bush Administration isn't new, and it isn't a minority of folks in America -- it is the majority of Americans who feel this way. And it is spreading, Chris, to the wholesome, the well-heeled, and the well-connected, and to the not so wholesome, the not well off, and the not connected at all -- you know, the people who used to be the most likely to enlist in our nation's voluntary military or work as public servants before George Bush took office.

Those people you see on your monitors from the Capitol protesting the continued risk to life and limb of other people's children to satisfy George Bush's ego and his legacy? They could very well be your neighbors.

Get used to it, Chris. Because we are just getting started. We are not backing down. And we aren't allowing you or anyone else to make excuses for the Bush Administration any longer. The time for accountability is now. Whether or not you and your pundit pals plan on ever holding the Bush Administration accountable for their failures -- we will. For as long as it takes...we will.

... as we all know, peace is the domain of the unwholesome.

After all.. its not as if Christ taught peace or anything. You know.. that guy most clean-cut warmongering conservative chickenhawks claim they worship (when its convenient for them).

Its not as if there are large numbers of veterans coming out against this war.

But we all know what this was.. or at least we should. It was NOT just a stereotype uttered without thought. It was said specifically to impress that stereotype on viewers. True, it may not work for all, but it works for some... especially those who watch without thinking critically. Nevermind that higher brain function is already suppressed by television after around 10 minutes of watching to begin with.

My roomie likes to watch Hardball and Meet the Press. He says that i give them a hard time and i shouldn't be so critical. Well, i refuse to watch them cuz they are just smug and arrogant POS, IMHO. Pretty soon they'll start backpedalling and say that they've been opposed to the war since the begining etc etc, and try to take all the credit for leading people to the anti-war side. What wankers.

With the exception of Keith Olberman, they are all Republican echo chambers in my opinion. I have stopped watching television news, with the exception of Olberman. I have even stopped donating to PBS. Liberal media? I don't think so. Notice the snide comments of the guy doing the interview.

Never watch these right-wing yahoo's! I haven't watched any of the Sunday follies since Lawrence Spivak was host of "Meet The Press," when it was a LIVE program!

I don't always look my best when protesting; I don't want to risk getting pepper spray on my Dior gown.

There is nothing wrong with showers, shaving, and looking presentable at least

on certain occaisions. Many of the "hippies", for lack of a better term, don't seem to get that first-impressions and 'looks' mean a lot, especially if you are trying to persuade someone to your views (and especially if the person you are trying to persuade is not a 'hippie'.) I recall during the last campaign being accosted several times by a John Kerry support urging me to vote for him. This individual was, essentially, camped out in front of a popular restaurant downtown and had a good audience of people going to/from work and the restaurant. Probably the majority of the people actually supported Kerry firstly (this was in a so-called 'liberal' town). However, this guy was unkempt, had the flighty matted 'white rasta' hair, wore old open-toed sandals, and reeked of sweat/marihuana/cigarettes. And his audience were people, for the most part, on lunch break from their offices downtown (wearing suits, buttondowns, dresses, etc.) Know your audience. If you are trying to sway "middle America" or "older people" don't dress hippie. If you are trying to sway some businessman don't show up stoned. If you are trying to appeal to the MTV 'counter-culture' then dress that way. Not saying one look is better than the other but no know audience if you wish to sway opinion....
ps: if you are going to court, especially as a defendent, take a shower, shave, and put on a decent suit!

Anti war 'Rabble'

I went to an antiwar march - my very 1st - in DC in Jan or Feb '03. Guess I too rather expected a Hippie bunch and was amazed to find it was a WASP looking crowd with many over 50 (white haired). We were out numbered by police on foot and horseback. A day or so later in the Washington Post on the op ed page a writer spoke of the 'typical rabble' who demonstrated against the coming war. The media has sold America out!

Chris Matthews is doing more to end the war than any of you ever will

and that's just a fact. While so many of you yell into a brown paper bag, Chris Matthews is speaking of the war to an audience of 5 million. He is pushing US Congressmen (and Congresswomen... although the original term was gender-neutral) more to pull the purse string than anyone else that is worthy of attention. Chris Matthews and Tim Russert are the true heroes of the moderate anti-war movement. The rest are just blowhards who want more attention, more money, and more "street-cred." Fuck them, if this war is going to end, we're going to do it the sensible way.
