UPDATE: Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers released the following statement in response to a letter from the White House in which the White House reiterates its intentions to assert executive privilege, without providing justification for the privilege claim as requested by the Committee:

“We are extremely disappointed with the White House letter. While we remain willing to negotiate with the White House, they adhere to their unacceptable all-or-nothing position, and now will not even seek to properly justify their privilege claims. Contrary to what the White House may believe, it is the Congress and the Courts that will decide whether an invocation of Executive Privilege is valid, not the White House unilaterally.”
This morning on ABC's This Week, House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (D-MI) highlighted the new American Research Group poll showing that nearly half of Americans want the House of Representatives to begin impeachment proceedings against President Bush, and 54 percent favor impeachment hearings for Vice President Cheney.

ABC's George Stephanopoulos asked Conyers today about new reports that the White House will refuse new congressional requests for documents about the U.S. Attorney firings.

Conyers decried the administration's stonewalling, adding, "We're hoping that as the cries for the removal of both Cheney and Bush now reach 46 percent and 58 percent [sic - 54 percent], respectively, for impeachment that we could begin to become a little bit more cooperative, if not amicable, in trying to get to the truth of these matters." (Click on the video to your right to watch it)

Stephanopoulos responded, "I'm surprised you put impeachment on the table there. Are you open to pursuing that?" Conyers said he was not putting it "on the table," merely pointing out the views of the American people.

Transcript:

STEPHANOPOULOS: One of those individuals is the former White House deputy political director, Sara Taylor. Her lawyer wrote a letter yesterday saying that she wants to testify, but the White House won't let her.
In that case, who would you hold in contempt, the individual or the White House? Her lawyers think she wants to testify.
CONYERS: Well, I certainly wouldn't hold her in contempt. And we're in negotiations with Mr. Fielding in the White House. We're hoping that as the cries for the removal of both Cheney and Bush now reach 46 percent and 58 percent, respectively, for impeachment that we could begin to become a little bit more cooperative, if not amicable, in trying to get to the truth of these matters.
We have so much more work to do, George, as you know. And we keep getting stalled. They keep pressing us. We're seeking cooperation. This is not partisan in any way whatsoever. I would have the same attitude if it were a Democratic president.
STEPHANOPOULOS: Congressman, we're just about out of time. But I'm surprised you put impeachment on the table there. Are you open to pursuing that?
CONYERS: No, I didn't put impeachment on the table. I was just telling you that 46 percent of the American people polled want Bush impeached, and 58 percent want Cheney impeached. I'm saying...
STEPHANOPOULOS: But not you?
CONYERS: They're saying that we could -- we could move -- no, well, if I -- if I wanted impeachment, I would probably be on your program next Sunday.
STEPHANOPOULOS: OK. Well, Mr. Chairman, thank you very much.

Let's see, more than half the American people want Cheney impeached, almost half want Bush impeached--what does it take to put impeachment on the table? Clearly Stephanopolous won't get us anywhere, and Conyers seems like a dud. I don't know what it takes to get Congress to put it on the table, except for Kucinich and his nine cosponsors, including my representative, Barbara Lee. It certainly won't be the New York Times, late to the party once again with today's "withdraw the troops". If voicing our opinions gets us nowhere, what are the alternatives? If impeachment's not on the table for Congress, perhaps forcible removal of our representatives and senators should be on the table for us. Oh well, fantasy again. I'm still writing everyone asking for impeachment...

Kitty...My complaint also. I'm to the point of extreme rudeness with my congress people. My emails usually have three words on them in 36 point type...IMPEACH! IMPEACH! IMPEACH! Somewhere in the coming months some clever American has got to find a way where our majority opinion must be responded to. The founders had NO idea of what damage could be done in one term in the office, let alone two.

Short of assassination, we the voting public cannot be heard!!

Asserting Executive Priviledge Without Consent......

"...the White House reiterates its intentions to assert executive privilege, without providing justification for the privilege claim as requested by the (Judiciary)Committee."

This...along with Cheney's assertion that the VP isn't a part of the Executive Branch, the "signing statements" Bush has been adding to all the laws handed him by the people through the Legislative Branch that he asserts means he doesn't have to obey them, nor provide anyone with any reason for his refusal, including a refusal to notify a secret court (FISA) of his decision to breach a Constitution already shredded by the "Patriot Act"; the ongoing pattern of lies and excuses that are now no longer even trying to sound rational......this and more than can't be said using only a few pages should all make it starkly apparent hat the Bush/Cheney/PNAC group has *already* staged a sort of 'silent' coup! They are right now...and quite wisely.... using any excuse or lie that will keep the MSM satisfied while they continue to consolidate their power until the '08 election makes it necessary to reveal their true nature!

How much proof does a country need to see that the executive branch is no such thing as a mere "branch" of government. That presumes they are part of a larger structure, yet they have repeatedly shown they are not answerable to anyone or anything. And the only word for that style of governing is "dictatorial". ...as in Dictator.
They have repeatedly shown they do not, and will not respect a constitutional form of government; one we have all enjoyed from a time even before Charles l had to be executed as a reminder to the Bushes and Cheneys of the day that the power to rule emanates from those who are ruled, and unless consent of the people is granted, either through Parliament, Congress or Senate, etc. then great violence is all that can become of this.

Charles did almost precisely the same maneuvers that Bush is doing now in order to rid himself of responsibility to any other "branch" of power. It cannot be coincidental!!!

IMPEACHMENT...only if the voice of the People Gets Louder

We can hold Bush, Cheney and their supporting cast accountable if messages and talk of impeachment increases in frequency and intensity. The key is to get more folks involved and repeat the message of impeachment over and over again until it becomes a mainstream household topic of conversation.

There are some great resources out there that need to be utilized by those of us who are informed and active in order to spread that consciousness to the greater part of the American population who are still trapped in their loops of complacency, fear, denial and/or ignorance.

Just to name a few; organizations like A28.org, Democrats.com and MyAmericaToo.com do a great job of providing organizational/action tools, clever initiatives and information that make it easier for people to get involved and perpetuate progressive actions, both nationally and locally, without being too draining on people's time and financial resources.

If you know of more ways to spread the word and help foment a real movement in America then Bring It On! Let help give our elected leaders the foundation of strong popular support so that they can pursue Impeachment full confidence and responsible aggression.
