Yesterday on MSNBC's Hardball, Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA) defended Ann Coulter's attacks on John Edwards, including that she wishes he "had been killed in a terrorist assassination plot."

He said that Elizabeth Edwards's calls to stop making "personal attacks" against her family were attempts to "silence conservative voices." He added that Coulter "is a very articulate spokeswoman for the conservative view" and "closely approaching that level of being a great American." Watch the video on your right.

It's hard to understand how Hunter justifies calling Coulter a "great American." She has repeatedly made anti-gay slurs, compared Muslims to members of the Ku Klux Klan, and advocated assassinating President Clinton. These extremely hateful views aren't what characterize a "great American," or even the majority of conservatives.

Transcript:

SHARPTON: Do you think that Sen. Edwards's wife was out of line, or correct in calling her, saying, "Let's take a lot of the personal attacks out of politics"?

HUNTER: Well, I think what Sen. Edwards's wife said was very consistent with what lots of Democrats and lots of liberals have said, since the amnesty bill went down in flames, and that is that we need to silence conservative voices, in some cases, of course, those voices are going to be of talk radio, whom the Democrats are particularly focusing on.

In this case, Ann Coulter is a very articulate spokeswoman for the conservative view. And I think the idea that when conservatives talk, they're considered to talk in a mean way, and yet when Democrats talk, they're exercising their right to free speech and they're simply conveying a philosophy. Of course, the whole idea in politics is to marginalize the other guy and make him appear to be extreme.

But I think especially because Ann Coulter said nice things about me, I think she's closely approaching that level of being a great American, Al.

"The President walked in and said that -- gave us a short speech saying that as we went on into our careers, it was important to treat others as we would like to be treated. And he told us that we would have to make choices we would be able to live with for the rest of our lives." - from the DemocracyNow interview.

Could the kids have had a better response? And could George have had a worse one than the old lie "We do not torture people."?

Hunter was heavily lobbied by reps of the defense contractor that bribed Randy Cunningham, and although Hunter was never implicated in bribery he has announced his retirement from Congress at the end of the 110th session. Connections to that specific defense contractor, and its links with Shirlington Limousine and the "DC Madam", have drawn flak from various sources (here and here).

He is also nagged by a long-running dispute over property tax owed on his 6000 square foot home in his constituency, which burned down in 2003.

Hunter is so right on about conservative voices, don't you see? Oh, and I have a new slogan for conservatives, inspired by -- you guessed it -- Hunter himself.

"The Conservative Voice. Hateful at Any Speed."

Why Keith doesn't yet have a Pullitzer is beyond me.
The "Special Comments" have been timely and to the point. Other journalists still haven't caught on and keep pretending that the Bush administration is populated with honorable people withn honorable intentions, in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary. (Who's in denial?)
Impeach George III AND President Cheney! They have established the grandest kleptocracy in scale ever to exist in the history of crooked politics. How many crimes can one regime commit before they are stopped? We are all complicit in their crimes, but especially that part of the journalistic community who turn a blind eye. Even Woodward has apparently been co-opted!
