Olbermann: "Mr. Bush, You've ceased to be the President" [VIDEO]

Posted by Adam Howard at 8:00 PM on July 3, 2007.

In an edition of his "Special Comment", Keith Olbermann pleads with Bush and Cheney to do the noble thing and resign, since they're incapable of putting partisan politics aside.
Olbermann’s Special Comment: You ceased to be the President of the United States

Besides characteristically obliterating the Bush Administration verbally, Olbermann makes a key distinction. We the people of the United States are always forced to accept and live with and even in some cases support presidents who don't represent our own political beliefs or party. Our presidents should be able to do the same for us, but instead Bush has allowed partisan politics to invade literally every aspect of what he does. Even Richard Nixon had the decency to resign for the good of the country but Bush has never, ever, put the country ahead of his cronies, pet projects and ego. Check out the video to your right to hear more of Olbermann's special comment of the Libby commutation, the possibility of impeachment and the parallels to Richard Nixon.

Excerpt:

Even Richard Nixon knew it was time to resign

Would that you could say that, Mr. Bush. And that you could say it for Mr. Cheney. You both crossed the Rubicon yesterday. Which one of you chose the route, no longer matters. Which is the ventriloquist, and which the dummy, is irrelevant.

But that you have twisted the machinery of government into nothing more than a tawdry machine of politics, is the only fact that remains relevant.

It is nearly July 4th, Mr. Bush, the commemoration of the moment we Americans decided that rather than live under a King who made up the laws, or erased them, or ignored them—or commuted the sentences of those rightly convicted under them—we would force our independence, and regain our sacred freedoms.

We of this time—and our leaders in Congress, of both parties—must now live up to those standards which echo through our history: Pressure, negotiate, impeach—get you, Mr. Bush, and Mr. Cheney, two men who are now perilous to our Democracy, away from its helm.

For you, Mr. Bush, and for Mr. Cheney, there is a lesser task. You need merely achieve a very low threshold indeed. Display just that iota of patriotism which Richard Nixon showed, on August 9th, 1974.

Resign.

With ratings soaring for Countdown, why are we not seeing copycats? Not that anyone would have the same style as Keith, but surely there are others that could do serious reporting without undue deference to those proven to have lied time and again.

They don't have an iota of shame. IF Bush even bothered to watch this tape, he probably smirked and laughed at the quaint idea of doing the right thing. It was a great commentary from Olbermann though.

That would sure end all the 'partisans' and 'politics'! Get real. That is the whole process, for good or for ill. Partisan used to be a 'good' term (remember WWII anyone)? Ignoring the lack of understanding of the terms (ps, Olberman consult Webster's or Oxford's for definition of politics and partisan), this 'argument' that, somehow, we need to end divisions between parties is laughable. The whole system, indeed the country, was founded upon partisan politics, cronyism, politican opportunism, conflict, etc. Read some history. The most 'devisive' elections happened many decades ago. Current politics pales in comparison to the issues, slanders, and scandals in the past. The only difference is inflation and the fact that due to modern technology we can identify the corruption in both parties more quickly--- not that we will do anything about since we'll just choose a side......

A Relief to Hear Someone Speak Out
Posted by: bozonono on Jul 3, 2007 11:03 PM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I am very thankful that there is at least on voice that is willing to speak up for me to voice the frustration and shame that I feel for the elected officials entrusted the authority to lead this country.

I have lived and worked in foreign countries for the United States, and I have seen the poverty, injustice and struggle of people in those countries who have no hope of achieving what this country has and continues to provide.

The institution of government in the United States and its principles are being railroaded and trampled by men who have a distorted vision of what the future of this country should be and, more importantly, how we should reach that vision. It is not the institution that is at fault but the deceitful, hypocritical individuals in whom we have entrusted the responsibility to govern on the behalf of all people in this country.

People are dying, not only in the military, but in our cities and rural areas from a lack of basic health care, from a lack of impartial justice, from a lack of basic civil rights, and from the loss of hope to achieve even basic needs. The dream is fading.

I started in my younger years a Republican, but as I matured and began to question and observe the evolution of this party, I could no longer offer my allegiance to this party. Neither party is perfect, but I believe that there are sincere, upstanding people in both parties as well as independent voters.

Thank you again, Mr Olberman for having the courage to speak out without mincing words.

. Use and Misuse of Presidential Clemency Power: Judiciary Hearing
Posted by: aurora2484 on Jul 4, 2007 2:26 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, Jr. announced that he will be holding a full committee hearing next week titled:
“The Use and Misuse of Presidential Clemency Power for Executive Branch Officials.”

The hearing will be held next Wednesday, July 11, at 10:15 am in the committee’s hearing room, 2141 Rayburn House Office Building.

“In light of yesterday’s announcement by the President that he was commuting the prison sentence for Scooter Libby, it is imperative that Congress look into presidential authority to grant clemency, and how such power may be abused,” Conyers said.

“Taken to its extreme, the use of such authority could completely circumvent the law enforcement process and prevent credible efforts to investigate wrongdoing in the executive branch.”

Keith O's speech is one for the ages. And perhaps he really started something.

Wow, I am moved. When I heard yesterday that he would give this speech, I thought this could be one for the ages, and it is.

Often, I have found KO's special commentaries to be good but this one was in a whole other realm of greatness. It felt historic.

He said what needed to be said, the way it needed to be said and carried the torch of American journalism at its best.

Thank you, KO. By taking the grievances of the grassroots American people demanding our system of law and Constitution be honored, to the high echelons of power, he may have really started something that finally can't be stopped. Bush & Cheney may never resign, but as KO said, today they ceased to be President.

An admirable job by Mr. Olberman, but as to whether the Democrats will ever impeach and convict Bush & Cheney, you can rest assured they won't. Of course, they may initiate impeachment proceedings, but only in such a manner that will bring them political advantage without actually removing anyone from office.

George W. Bush and Dick Cheney are a godsend to the Democratic Party. Even more so than in 2004, the Democrats will use the spectre of Bush and his neocon ilk as a bogeyman to scare their constituencies to vote -- not FOR Democrats, but AGAINST their Republican opponents. It doesn't matter who the Republican nominee is, you can be certain Dems across the board will be running against George W. Bush. Why would they rid themselves of their most perfect foil?

I have no love for George W. Bush, and if Satan ever went into politics, I daresay Dick Cheney is what he'd look like. But I've come to understand the cynical political machinations of the Democratic Party more than I care to. Though there are certainly well-intentioned and even idealistic individuals among them, as a whole, they care much more about the acquisition and maintenance of political power than doing what's right for the country.

Mark my words -- unless, by some miracle of fate, George W. Bush or Dick Cheney are stricken dead, they'll both be in office until January 2009.

I love the passion and anger, finally expressed by an intelligent member of the 4th estate. I too felt this administration closely paralled the Nixon one, except Nixon was much more covert in his actions. I now feel Marie Antoinette is a much closer example of a historical character. Everytime this president speaks all I hear is, "Let them eat cake!"

He was one of the first to tell the shrub TO HIS FACE (even though he used humor as his method) what we all think of him. Before Colbert at the correspondent's dinner, remember how everyone was afraid to criticize the shrub? Well, it sure changed after that. And now it's definitely done quite often. But no one does it like Keith. NO ONE. He is my personal hero right now, and the fact that he showed genuine outrage during this special comment really just pushed it over the edge. Talk about MOVING!!! I knew something good was coming but I really didn't expect such a succinct, honest, passionate speech. WOW is all I can say. Oh my point about Colbert was that the day after he smeared the shrub, a "thank you Stephen Colbert" site was set up. Anyone know if Keith has one? If not, he should. That man speaks for so many of us, and on a national news program. I for one DO worry for his safety, esp. after the anthrax thing. GO KEITH!!!!

Goerge Bush dies (YA!) and he goes strait to hell. The Devil greets him there by saying, "For important people like you we have chioces in Hell." George gives the Devil one of those stupid looks of his, and then the devil leads him to a door that he opens, where HGenry Kissinger is shoveling coal into a furnace for eternity. Goerge grabs his back and says, "Oh my back, I don't think I can do that." The Devil leads him to another door, and behind it is Richard Nixon being sodomized by a transexual. George says, "That is a sin, I can't do that." The Devil leads him to a third door, and behind it is Monica lewinsky giving Bill Clinton a blowjob for eternity, and George says, "OK, I can live with this. The Devil looks to Monica, and says, "Monica, you are out of here."

Words here are great. But complaining isn't action...

If you want change, you have to make it happen. Call your elected officials, complain to them, write them a letter, DEMAND they do something. Hold them accountable. Use the power you have. Call your newspaper, write a letter to the editor, start a petition, do something.

Change won't come until enough people stand up and make it happen. It doesn't have to be a huge group, just a determined, motivated group.

"Never underestimate that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world, indeed it's the only thing that ever has." - Margaret Mead

"Public sentiment is everything. With public sentiment nothing can fail; without it nothing can succeed. He who molds public sentiment goes deeper than he who enacts statutes or decisions possible or impossible to execute." - Abraham Lincoln

"In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act." - George Orwell

"Once a government is committed to the principle of silencing the voice of opposition, it has only one way to go, and that is down the path of increasingly repressive measures, until it becomes a source of terror to all its citizens and creates a country where everyone lives in fear." - Harry S Truman

"The citizen can bring our political and governmental institutions back to life, make them responsive and accountable, and keep them honest. No one else can." - John Gardner

Video url, etc sent by a NY friend---I listened---twice. Every word on target. Why are there not more JOURNALISTS like this man? Bush has always made the hair on the back of my neck stand on end---a BAD sign, according to my gt. grandmother. Her advice, if this happens, get out---apologise later, but remove myself from any one/any situation that happens to me in. The overall apathy in our country is scary. No one wants to make waves. Too many would rather accept the status quo than raise their voice, be counted, attempt change. People NEED to think and ponder on such home truths. Unfortunately, there's an old axiom-----"Kill the messenger." Take care of Mr. Olbermann, he will probably be someone's target after his honest, real, thought provoking speech.
