I'm no fan of Colin Powell. As far as I'm concerned he was downright cowardly during the run-up to the Iraq War. I don't buy into this "he was being a good soldier" myth about why he didn't use his considerable clout to force President Bush to back down from his plans to invade Iraq. That said, he still is beloved by a lot of moderates out there and much of the mainstream press. So when he comes out against the illegal activities the Bush Administration has endorsed in Guantanamo Bay, it sways people that perhaps a right-from-the-start progressive wouldn't. Naturally, I'd have preferred it if Powell had challenged the administration more when he was in it. But I'll take what I can get. In the video to your right, Powell goes on to say that, "Guantanamo has become a major, a major problem for America’s perception as it’s seen, the way the world perceives America. And if it was up to me, I would close Guantanamo, not tomorrow, this afternoon."

How does a war criminal who admits he lied, look liberal to Liebermann and Cheney?

Kudos to Colin Powell, who has come to his senses, about the limits of Amerikan fascism. He was a class thug for Republicans, carrying out the policies of class Empire. He lied for them, the neocons, even though he had reservations about these "crazies", and the liberal class instiutions, the corporate media cheered him on.

Now Lieberaman and a 100 appeaseing class liberals are to the right of Colin Powell, voting to give the "crazies", neocons and Zionist fascist pigs, the right to attack Iran, and put everyone behind bars, without trials, or charges for resisting their fascism, zionism. Is this not enough proof that we need an independent party of class interests, corporate interests, and an idoelogy that breaks from this class rot???

Why do you legitimize these people?

Tim Russert is a hack of the first order, a panderer. Colin Powell is part of a criminal conspiracy that has killed 3500+ of our soldiers.

Why do you give them a forum, why are you acting as if they have anything legitimate to say? Why are you publishing them, giving their corruption credence?

You're part of the perpetuating noise machine called the Mainstream Media. Empty of morality and bearing false witness, you should be ashamed, dishonored and disregarded.

I have no respect for Mr. Powell, his criminal son or anything either of them have to say in regards to human decency. I and, I would hope other citizens around the entire face of the Earth, would rather see him, his masters and orchestrators, put on trial for WAR CRIMES and CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY just as Hitler's regime was at Nuremburg!

And his own sorry war criminal arse. Not the morality or the practise.

***k him and the horse he rode in on. Give him to the survivors of My Lai to do with as they please. Or the infamous "Turkey Shoot" on the road to Basra. Or Falleujah.

When Ted Kennedy called for the closing of Gitmo I wrote him to consider housing these enemy combatants in his state. Maybe in Fenway Park. But then again that place is so old, keeping them there would be real torture.

Let's see.....
Waterboarding or picking up body pieces from the oceans?
I'll take waterboarding.

Waterboarding or a dirty bomb detonating in a US city?
I'll take waterboarding.

Waterboarding or a plot to contaminate our food supply?
I'll take waterboarding.

I sort of hear what you're saying; unfortunately, you're going to a dangerous extreme to make a point.

Because your black-and-white, emotionally-driven brain has impaired your ability to formulate a thoughtful question , you can only ask: "Should we allow terrorists to kill us, or should we torture." The problem with what you're saying isn't that you're answering your question incorrectly. The problem is you're asking the wrong question. I too would agree and order the torture of anyone if I thought it would save a multitude of lives. But we don't live in a world of two choices (die or torture?), and when you ask the wrong question, you end up with the wrong answer.

The question that truly thoughtful people are asking is "what is the smartest, quickest, and most effective way to fight terrorism; how can we build iron-clad protection against terrorism while also respecting basic human rights and international conventions regarding torture and ethics?"

It's important to be thoughtful (and, perhaps, even pre-emptive) in response to terrorism. But a thoughtful answer to a thoughtful question about fighting terror should include consideration of this:

30 years of research CLEARLY indicates that information gleaned from torture--physical OR psychological--is notoriously poor or entirely wrong. Research indicates that the building of trust, rapport, and alliances with prisoners is the most reliable and effective method in getting others to talk and to give you GOOD intel.

Unfortunately, you're simple, yes/no, black/white view of the world is an example of what happens when people allow their adrenal glands (fight or flight response) to rule their frontal cortex (the thing that separates us from apes).

Absolutely. Less than 5% of Abu Gharib detainees are actual combatants. Rather, they are civilians implicated by military personnel, government officials, and other civilians motivated by the promise of reward money for delivering suspects that provide terror-related intelligence. This means there's no difference between abu gharib and a concentration camp. For more about the abu gharib = concentration camp distinction check out the link in the post below. And Guantanamo doesn't have a much better track record.

I'll repost a message from a few days ago that was originally intended for "psychologists and torture" message board...overlaps a bit.

He was part of the My Lai massacre coverup. What more does anyone need to know after that?

He is a war criminal, and belongs in the dock at the Hague next to Milosovic, Bush, Cheney, Blair, Rumsfeld, and all the rest of them. Given that that is not going to happen, let him rot in hell.
