On last Wednesday's show, veteran shock jock Don Imus and his producer Bernard McGuirk called the (mostly black) Rutgers basketball team "nappy-headed hos," (VIDEO 1).

On Friday, after calls for an apology and Imus' resignation reached a pitch, he squirted out a teensy little apology (VIDEO 2). Richard Prince writes:

However, Philip Nobile, a New York writer who has called attention to offensive Imus comments for years, told Journal-isms, "I heard the so-called apology this morning. The words were right but Imus was obviously insincere.
"The statement was read without affect, to the smallest audience at 6am, and never repeated. McGuirk said nothing."
But the Imus show couldn't leave well enough alone; no, they had to have a segment, also on Friday's show, featuring a piss-poor Bill Clinton imitator chalking Obama's $25 million fund-raising up to "pimping" or "selling crack." (VIDEO 3)

According to Prince: "[L]ate Friday, NABJ said the apology was insufficient and called 'for the immediate removal of Imus and his WFAN producer, Bernard McGuirk — who referred to the players as jigaboos and wannabees — by Monday morning.'" And they hadn't even heard about the "pimping" remark yet.

As Media Matters has noted, the Imus show has a looooong history of racism.

TVNewser reports that MSNBC, which runs the program, says "we don't give a crap, we just re-run it...": In a statement, MSNBC distanced itself from it: "While simulcast by MSNBC, Imus in the Morning is not a production of the cable network and is produced by WFAN Radio. As Imus makes clear every day, his views are not those of MSNBC. We regret that his remarks were aired on MSNBC and apologize for these offensive comments."

Both Sharpton and Jesse Jackson have protests planned for today. Sharpton will have Imus on his program today at 1pm -- we'll have more as it's available...

Sharpton said yesterday:
"Somewhere we must draw the line in what is tolerable in mainstream media," he said. "We cannot keep going through offending us and then apologizing and then acting like it never happened. Somewhere we've got to stop this."
In video 4, Imus talks more about the issue on this morning's program: "I am not a racist..." For another take on the scandal, see Jill Nelson's essay HERE: "Word up, Don: being racist, sexist, and disrespectful towards women and others isn’t cool, hip, or a revolutionary act of politically incorrect subversion, it’s plain wrong..."

UPDATE: According to Matt Stoller a coalition to pressure MSNBC is forming: "The National Association of Black Journalists is spear-heading a campaign against MSNBC and Imus for his racist comment and his legacy of racism, backed by Essence's Editor in Chief, Angela Burt-Murray. Now, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are pushing aggressively, with Imus going on Sharpton's show today to reiterate his apology. It's not enough..." More.

UPDATE 2: Imus on Al Sharpton's program is HERE.

Digg!

Now, at what point does one become a racist... if making racially derogatory remarks about people you don't know and will likely never meet doesn't cut it for that definition.

What, exactly, is the cutoff point for "being a racist"?

that this idiot makes remarks like this? He has no power, only a microphone in front of him which anyone can chose to turn off. Which I do. Why waste your time with an idiot? Isn't it bad enough we have to tolerate one in the oval office?

Isn't there a tinge of racism in the idea that black folks can say "nappy headed hos," while a white person can't? That's a double standard if I ever saw one.

Al Sharpton is the most right(eous)! He is right we should punish him, punish everyone, punish anyone that talks out of line, anyone that says anything offensive, anyone that is stirring the pot, anyone that is ignorant. Punish, punish, punish. Make them apologize, humiliate them, fire them, remove them from society. Without these measures of retribution in place the average citizien or Imus listener would not recognize what he said is wrong. We need guidance, we are lost without it. Thank goodness for the great Al Sharpton rising to the occasion, demanding his apology, demanding his resignation setting our society straight. Where would we be without the great social dictators such as Al Sharpton?

...F Limbaugh and his clones. When are we going to get tired of the babbling racists.

Imus can say anything he wants, but his media boss has the option to can him. As a program director and manager, I have fired people who displayed racist attitudes on the air.
Let Imus go to work for fox. They could use a few progressive racists.

There is nothing funny about Imus when he does this kind of material. Some of the "Famous Guests" who appear on his show should just not go there anymore. If he is kept on TV and Radio, it is fueled by corporate greed, not ethics.

I don't think it was racist. I think he just made a personal comment. I am so tired of people having to appologize for everything they say or do. What happened to ones right to free speech? That's what makes this country or used to make this country unique was our right to say what we thought!! If a black person had made that comment it would not have been a problem or an issue. I don't think he should be fired and he has already appologized. Be done with it! Mind your own business Al Sharpton.

The good old days were not that long ago. Imus got me through countless blizzards and traffic jams when I commuted. At some point he stopped being funny and turned more toward weighing in on various things. Suddenly he ran the risk of offending everyone. I didn't hear the program so I won't judge him. But I wished for a long time that he would just be his old ridiculous self. No one else ever made me laugh at 7AM. Not a morning person. Thanks, ANNA

Butif you accept this definition:
Anyone who promotes negative racial stereotypes, for whatever purpose (including fun and profit), is a racist of some description.

So who of you would like to cast the first stone?

Yeah, Imus is a dolt, mouthy and a racist but what people tend to forget is that being a racist is not against the law.
RACIAL DISCRIMINATION is what is illegal.

As far as my research tells me, we still have free speech in this country, even if it is hateful, stupid and uninformed.

Furthermore why is it that Manne Coulter and her ilk can still spew their nasty, hateful and frankly dangerous crap and still get on prime air time? Is it because they still make money for someone (so far?)

Sticks and Stone may break my bones but WORDS can never hurt me.

...says a lot about both our educational system and our economic system. Freedom of speech is one thing, but at what point does it become an attack, or inciting to violence and abuse? Preaching/teaching hatred is something that really needs to be stigmatized in this country if anything does, instead of disagreement with a government that's elitist and purely corporate-owned and operated. This is a clear divide and conquer strategy, and damn it all, it's working.

What really irks me is the deliberate CREATION by the government of ghettos and racially biased imprisonment, loss of living-wage jobs and benefits, THEN the loss of any kind of help that doesn't predetermine failure, and then using all of these things to "prove" that the targeted skin colors and religions are "inferior"! The only thing that irks me more is that PEOPLE BUY THIS GARBAGE! They swallow it hook, line and sinker!

I wonder when people are going to figure out that there's only one sapient (more or less) race on the planet: human?

Ian

I'm so sick of some black leaders thinking that their race is allowed to be racists toward whites, and white folks must be punished for making any remarks about blacks. Why some people even listen to his ignorant black racist drivel is beyond me. If everyone would ignore this small minded racist scumbag, he would be forced to slink away from decent people like the low-life skunk that he is.

I don't think so. Why are they calling people racists? Why don't they forgive those that throw verbal stones? These people need to take a back seat to people that don't make an issue about nonsense and people who say don't kill in my name.

To the back Sharpton and Jackson.

This is a non-issue as far as I'm concerned. I'm not fond of Imus, but I find his comment "nappy-headed hos" totally harmless within it's context. It's simply juvenile humor, that's all.

After all the gnashing of teeth concerning Mel Gibson and the Seinfeld guy, everyone's got their panties in a bunch.

You'd think this stupid old fart would have learned at his age that the type of comment he thoughtlessly and off-handedly made is not only unacceptable but it ain't all that funny, and it does nothing to improve race relations. It was insulting, negative & destructive in every way.

I agree with Sharpton. I don't think his suspension is a strong enough measure. I think he should lose his job for it. This kind of thing should not be tolerated. Allowing him to keep his job implies that it is.

You can say anything you want sitting in a radio booth...but in reality said to a real person, whether it is said by a white or black man someone will be chin-checked!
You can rap about "nappy headed hos" and say a whole lot of other offensive things about black women, but in reality said in front of a real person, again, that does not make it right and again, someone's ass will be kicked!!!
It would be nice if the black men in this country come to the defense of its black women.
But in reality, rappers seem to be the be-all male image which is a lie. Rappers are sell-outs 'cause they answer to coporate America. Call a white woman out of her name and let's see what happens. We need real black men to step up and not boys who think they're only rappers and not men first.
So the reality is ....Don Imus will keep is job!!

Yeah, he said it. I've never cared for Imus In the Morning, and I can't believe people still listen to him even if he's 127365 years old. It was a hateful thing to say, what Imus said about Rutgers womens basketball, but quit crying about it. Everyone has hateful things said about each other everyday...give it a break. Yeah, racism is a terrible thing, but it just clearly triggers more hate among people. Just ignore that old fool and get on with your life!

Gagging Imus

Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Anyone who calls our Veep a "war crimminal" can't be all bad. The gagging of Imus for his remarks, which were in bad taste, but not illegal, is nothing more than censorship. Perjury (under oath) is illegal, and slander is punishable by civil suits, but insulting remarks are the price we pay for our freedom of speech. NBC (read GE), you will recall, is the network that banned the Texas Chicks from using their network, because those girls were critical of our President. Where was the outrage then? I hope CBS has the guts to support this man, who has done far more good than any harm caused by the intemperate remarks, which he relies upon to give his program it's identity. If CBS also chooses to fire him, that will make two networks I will be boycotting---not to mention the suddenly, sanctimonious Salon with their distorted view of the real world. Servicemen and veterans (of all colors) can be thankful for this maverick's recent crusade against their mistreatment by our government. The impact from the insult to young women of Rutgers will have little effect on their lives or that of their race in the long run, but stiffling the voice of this outspoken man will do for more harm than good, not only to them, but all of America. As for Imus he has found out who his real supporters are!

White people are to blame

Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
You know, I’ve read quite a bit of posts recently by white people saying that Imus was only fired for what he said because he was white, and also I’ve heard people try to somehow link this Imus story to the January Christian/Newsome murder (http://ronbosoldier.blogspot.com). Frankly, I don't know what all you people are talking about! You seem to think that somehow it’s racist for white people to actually get fired for saying racist things! Black people have had it way worse than that for a long time! They had to be slaves for a long time and are still suffering terribly because of it. Also, women have been mistreated throughout history. So because their ancestors were mistreated they should be treated better than the REAL enemy, which is the WHITE MAN!

If it were published all over the internet and on major radio stations that Black people had tortured and murdered two white people, then that would make Blacks as a whole look bad, which is completely untrue! Similarly, if people blamed the rape victim Black girl in the Duke rape case for "lying" about being raped (though it has been shown that women almost never lie about being raped) it would make Black women look bad. But if our society keeps trying to make Blacks and women look bad, how are they ever going to be equal?

I’m a white male and I’ve realized this! How long it is going to take before the rest of you catch on??? It’s the WHITE MEN that are the cause of all our country’s problems, and therefore it makes complete sense for Imus to be fired! Finally, a step in the right direction!
