The South Park boys pit a power hungry Bill Donohue against Jesus against the backdrop of Stan's attempt to understand just what a Bunny has to do with the risen Christ.

As both Julia and Pastordan note, Bill Donohue is way too busy moralizing about a Chocolate Jesus sculpture to worry about a Republican presidential candidate's abortion stance or pecadillo-happy past, despite his vociferous denunciations of John Kerry before the 2004 elections.

It seems his adherence to the Republican Party line is a bit sturdier than his adherence to the Catholic Church -- let alone to the ideals of Jesus. Something the South Park boys get right in the episode excerpted here (part 3, the denouement, in which Donohue and Jesus face off, will be available shortly).

Noting that Donohue has called said boys "whores and cowards," the Orlando Sentinel quotes the Catholic League's response to the episode excerpted here:

On last night’s episode of the Comedy Central show "South Park," Catholic League president Bill Donohue appeared as one of the cartoon characters, along with a figure of Pope Benedict XVI. The Easter script depicted Donohue chastising the pope for being "too soft." Donohue then takes over as pope. When a Jesus figure appears, he has both the pope and Jesus arrested. After Jesus is killed by Kyle, he resurrects and kills Donohue.

Donohue commented on this today:

"I have no idea why 'South Park' creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker caricature me as a heartless thug. In any event, I stand convicted and have no defense. Now I have to get back to business—I hear someone just took some liberties with the Easter Bunny."

I'm guessing he's trying to come off as good-humoredly dismissive....

...the religious wackos worry about a chocolate Jesus while the priests are busy making little edible wafers that are supposed to be the body of Jesus.

My guess is that they are upset that they did not think of chocolate first...it is more addicting.

As a recovering Catholic, do we really need more evidence that the Catholic faith is a perfect place for mindless wackos?

By the way this South Park episode is awesome!!! You should put it on DVR before the good Catholics use their censorship power.

Well maybe that's because you're a heartless thug, Bill. Don't you listen to the bile that comes out of your mouth every time you open it?

Christ told you to love your enemies, not attack them. You would do well to remember that. You and your little group there have turned being Catholic into a political tool to push your own agenda, that's not what Jesus would have done. You know it. Matt and Trey know it and the rest of the Catholics out there besides your group know it. It's time you start actually acting like Christ and not using him like a cudgel to bash your way into the public eye. Jesus is not your agent. The bible is not your publicity stunt.

Matthew 6:5-6
And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

Every time I think they can't top themselves, South Park comes up with something better.

I bow before the masters of satire !!!

Seriously, using South Park to advance an anti-Conservative agenda is impossible. They, like me, are willing to call anyone out. Hand picking their clips to make fun of conservatives just doesn't work! Be original for (chocolate) Christ's sake!

If it was a chocolate Mohammad would AlterNet post this article? Nope. Criticizing a religion that forces women to wear a burkha is a good religion.

Let's drop the childish name calling... Let's get the reality here...

Oh wait that's wacKo, not Waco. One would get shot by the FBI in the former. Anyho...

Bill Donohoe. Religious nut? Compared to who? Pat "let's assassinate world leaders, the anti-christ is a Jew in Israel" Robertson maybe? Come on. Donahoe is just another one of many who want to get onto TV to promote their organizations bullshit.

Just like there are professors selling 9/11 Truth, there are those selling Gods truth. And just like each pundit for whatever, they are selling bullshit. They are about promotion, airtime, money. That's all. Any ideological position they have will change in a second to keep the money coming in. Grow up.

In fact, such self interested punditry all one ever sees on US media... some twat promoting their own myopic interests while claiming to be doing it for "the country" or "Jesus" or 'the children".

I'm disappointed that the majority of posts that follow Alternet stories are generally made up of those on one side of the fence or the other. Me, I'm looking at the fence.

Keep your eye on the fence. That's the reality part people.

Who exactly is using South Park to attack a political foe? Alternet? South Park is making fun of Donahue and does a damn good job, and Alternet posts it on the site because it is humorous. You seem to be the only one here who doesn't get it!

I don't watch much but everyso often I catch an episode on re-run or if bored. The best was the stereotype episode with the punch line of the 'lazy mexican'. Classic.
