While on the phone with high-stakes gambler and values champion Bill Bennett, John McCain thought he'd give a little wink to the wingnuts by saying that "There are neighborhoods in Baghdad where you and I could walk through those neighborhoods, today." [audio right, courtesy CAW].

You're just not hearing that in the media, he claimed, aiming an arrow at yet another straw bogeyman, the media.

Well, it turns out the media doesn't like that. Especially when the Senator is so wrong about the state of things in Iraq that there's "laughter down the line" in response to his comments FROM THE MILITARY.

To CNN he claimed that "General Petraeus goes out there almost every day in an unarmed humvee."

Nothing of the sort. Petraeus doesn't do that, nobody who wants to live does that. In the video (above, right) CNN's Michael Ware -- who's been in Iraq for four years -- lambasts McCain. It's damn near embarrassing.

If McCain would like to maintain his credibility there IS something that Senator McCain can do: he can name the streets that can be walked down (or, alternatively, he can walk them). That, at least, is John Aravosis' prescription for reputational healing.

The very latest has McCain claiming, with his own words thrown back at him, that that's not what he meant:

ROBERTS: Senator, did you mean to say that, that General Petraeus goes out every day in an unarmed humvee?

SEN. JOHN McCAIN (R-AZ): I mean that there are neighborhoods safe in Iraq and he does go out into Baghdad and the fact is there has been significant progress and people are stuck in a time warp of three months ago. Of course, it’s still dangerous. Of course it’s still very dangerous. We only have two of the five brigades there and we are already seeing significant progress.

ROBERTS: Because I checked with General Petraeus’s people overnight and they said he never goes out in anything less than an up-armored humvee. You also told Bill Bennett on his radio program on Monday. You said there are neighborhoods in Baghdad where you and I could walk through those neighborhood today yet retired General Barry McCaffrey said no Iraqi government official, coalition soldier, diplomat reporter could walk the streets of Baghdad without heavily armed protection. We’ve got two different stories here. Who’s right?

McCAIN: Well, I’m not saying they could go without protection. The President goes around America with protection. So, certainly I didn’t say that.

It ought to be pointed out that in pre-invasion Iraq, it was safe to drive just about anywhere. There's just no case to be made that our presence is making things better.

Further, I don't believe there is much of a case to be made that things would get worse if we left. Bombings aimed at our troops, and the collateral damage/death associated with them would stop immediately. Absolutely, sectarian violence would continue, but is there any reason to believe these people are holding back because US troops are around?

Please dear God, let us get rid of this nut case. McCain is another old guy who is too mentally unbalanced to be president.

McCain has shown that he would be worse than Bush. He will have us fighting everyone all over the globe. Does he actually think that he can make false statements about a Gen. and that he won't get caught. What a moron.

John McCain is obviously losing it. It's probably time for his handlers and family to take a hand. At least he's doing it with preposterous statements rather than extreme public misbehavior like some other high profile legislators of both parties in the past. Some consolation, huh?

Is being nuts the 'new normal' ? Someone please stop McCain. He is an embarassment to himself and the rest of us. He could be an even worse Prez than we have now. I didn't think that was possible. Thanks, ANNA

Nice to hear an Aussie showing that numbnut McCain what 'straight talking' actually means.

This guy McCain might be some sort of big wig in the US Senate but he'd be eaten alive in the bear pit of the Australian parliament.

The AIPAC Correspondent interviews the whack-job Senator from Arizona. Wolf (is that his given name?) is unfair and McCain is unbalanced.

BTW- Can Mr. Blitzer go more than 3 minutes without saying 'The Situation Room'.

wait.. you.. you mean... that just because a politician says he is a "straight shooter" or whatever.. and the media parrots that statement.... that he might actually lie?!?!?! I'm thoroughly disillusioned by this!

Newsflash... ALL politicians lie and ALL politicians are scum. It is a requirement for being a politician in the first place.

Among other sins, McCain was one of the "Keating Five" senators. You haven't forgotten those $billions YOU and I paid for the Savings& Loan fiasco, have you? Well, "Honest" John was one of those who pocketed some of those ill-gotten gains!

Yep, he was captured and held for five years in NVN. Think that makes you a deliberative introspective person, or just a raving nutjob? I vote for the latter. He doesn't like vets, he votes against funding the vets health care everytime. He is just another suit that is empty the problem is that it has gone to his head.
What about all the other vets that are lucid and have things to say, instead of giving this whack job the podium let's hear from Jim Webb. This will play out sooner or later, and it isn't going to be pretty, but in a few short years you will be able to thank these guys personally, I am sure. Enjoy the new lifestyle, coming soon to your house, or tent depending on your mortgage.

I have rarely seen total horseshit so effectively and succinctly refuted. Better late than never. Heard McCain spouting the exact same lies... er, I mean talking points on Bill Bennet's show - probably in other places too.

From the article:
"If McCain would like to maintain his credibility there IS something that Senator McCain can do:"

Yeah –– promise to leave politics, and then make good on that promise. It's the only honest direction he has left.
