Valerie Plame just finished testifying before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee (video right), marking the first time she has publicly answered questions about her 2003 outing as a covert CIA operative by White House operatives. Notably, Plame cited the "terrible irony that administration officials were the ones who destroyed my cover" and suggested that others may think twice about working for and with the CIA "if our government cannot even protect my identity."

At the beginning of the hearing, Committee Chairman Henry Waxman (D-CA) explained that it was not Congress' job "to determine criminal culpability, but it is out job to determine what went wrong and insist on accountability." By the end of the session, he was grumbling, "Facts are not Republican or Democratic."

His consternation followed a shocking display of partisanship, as Republicans questioned at length whether Plame was even covert. Lynn Westmoreland (R-GA) was a particular disgrace, demanding to know whether Plame was a Democrat or a Republican, to which Plame responded, "I am a Democrat." The hypocrisy of Westmoreland accusing Plame (and her husband) of being partisan hacks during that session would have been laughable if it weren’t so profoundly infuriating.

Tom Davis (R-VA) dismissed the entire thing as "more like a CIA problem than a White House problem." Plame nonetheless pointed out that it was senior officials at the White House and State Department who "carelessly and recklessly" outed her, that the president promised to remove anyone associated with the leak, but that Karl Rove is still there. Oof.

Evan Adds:

In the second video, Democrat Elijah Cummings of Maryland is "shocked" that the White House's Office of Security (directed by Dr. James Knodell, questioned in the video) never initiated any kind of investigation to "at the very least" determine whether security clearances needed to be revoked (cough...Rove... cough).

Or, like, as the president himself promised, whether it was important to get to the bottom of the damaging outing of Valerie Plame, a CIA agent working to GET INTELLIGENCE ON IRAN, the administration's current bogeyman.

Knodell takes a stab at claiming that they didn't have to do it because of the Fitzgerald investigation -- Chairman Waxman calls Bullshit...

Digg!

Another Terrible Irony

That Ms. Plame was working on securing intelligence on Iran's nuclear program through the Brewster Jennings front. Cheney, et al, crashed the very operation that would help them make the case for their beloved attack on Iran.

Meanwhile, I just can't understand why Plamegate hasn't caught fire with the public, glamorous spy and all. Maybe it will when the TV movie comes out.

Oh, the ignorance of history. There must have been some kind of state wide blackout in Georgia in 1954 during the HUAC nonsense, 'cause damn.

Classic question from Lynn Westmoreland (R-GA) to Valerie Plame:

"Would you say you're a Demuhcrat or a Republukun?"

It's also time to finally peel the "ignorance" label off George Bush. It seem unlikely that he was completely ignorant of all the underhanded dealings of his staff.

He shouldn't only be "held accountable' for what happened under his watch, he should also be exposed for full knowledge and culpability of these "impeachable/traitorous" acts.

Let's stop treating George Bush as a complete idiot and realize that he may only be half idiot and the other half ..... perhaps a devious, immoral, nasty, bully who is easily led to seek revenge against anyone who searches for the truth.

It's not just Cheney and Rove. The true villains are the troika of Bush, Cheney, and Rove.

The only way to get to the bottom of all this is to send the Bush Administration to one of those "secret" overseas prisons and use torture on them all until they finally confess to all their crimes --- from A to Z.

Halliburton has been doing business with Iran all along, in spite of the boycott/sanctions....

If Plame hadn't been outed, perhaps what she was working on would have eventually implicated Halliburton for illegal activities...?

Now, of course, Halliburton's home office is going to be located in Dubai (the ones who wanted control of our ports, remember), and Dubai does not have an extradition treaty with the US....

Things that make one go hmmmmm...........

Ah yes in time the truth will come out but will it be too late? I so do hope not. We are in this mess, how did we get here? As far as I know Valerie Plame was doing her job and got in the way of? Just like a lot of others, ow long will this continue to go on?
Time to really think about the whole past six years, thanks.

Another Bullet Dodged By Bush-Cheney(so far)

Here is another example of partisan politics taking precedents
over National Security. Its pretty obvious Bush -Cheney
Could care less about our countries security and welfare or
laws and rules. These people have flaunted the rights of gov.
employees and jeopordized many lives to try to prove the lies they told were truths. If this isn't reason to impeach them all then what will make a case against them?
Their actions are Treason and they should be arrested and tried for that crime. Their actions for not even investigating the
leak of Ms Plame outing, shows their arrogants and disregard for this countries safety.

If the Congress don't start impeachment over this hearing and put a stop them before we end up with a war with Iran, then we have a problem with our Congress and Nancy Pelosi.
These treasonable offences can-not be ignored and let slide like Bush did with Plames outing. It is Pelosi,s job to uphold the
law of the land and the Constitution (so help her God)

Underlying cause

We are consistently analyzing the dark symptoms of the ruling class that has risen since 1941 when the US declared war in Japan. So we stop the blame at puppets all, Bush, Rove, Cheney, Rice, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, etc.

It is time we all view the film, "Why We Fight" and recognize that the 'Military Industrial Complex" has had nearly 60 years to consolidate its corporatist, fascist control of our political system. Individual villains are easy to find, but until citizens are able to purge corporate perpetrators of the pay-as-you-go and systematic dismantling of our past great constitutional Republic, we face fascism full on. There is a ruling class in our USA, but it is not us. The class wars have been won by our corporatist, bought-and-paid Congress as well as Administration. We can begin by boycotting every company (including food industry) that have taken military contracts; the war profiteers, Daddy Warbucks.

Then come 2008, make sure stealth Republicans like Hillary Clinton do not get the Dem nomination; that we withhold any of our primary votes for those Congressmen who voted with Bush Administration on any nefarious bill for war, police powers/ presidential powers expansion and tax favoritism. Be careful to review voting records. Take it easy on bonifide peace worker members of Congress (we are often hardest on our own), get voters registered and to the polls, and sing while we work!

If the next election is stolen, then take to the streets like Lech Walesa's Hungarian people to storm Washington; paralize the Capital until the rogues step down. The rights of the Individual must be taken back from the corporations.

Yes, we can and do take to the streets. Lech Wallesa represented Solidarnosc, the longshoremen in Gdansk, Poland. He led demonstrations by union members which later picked up more support from "the people." I regret the lack of union strength in our country - general strikes are effective in Europe because unions are strong! General strikes "back in the day" were effective here. Read some history. There ARE more important concerns than celebrity crap "news!"
