This video clip has been watched literally hundreds of thousands of times on the web but the issues at stake are understood by few. It's been received with glee by both progressives sick to death at what they view as Democratic inaction and conservatives who are grateful that infighting between Dems and their grassroots takes the heat off them.

Many will be immediately sympathetic to "marine mom"'s plight and thus her arguments. David Obey's rude and hurtful outburst doesn't help him any. But Obey has been a longtime ally of the antiwar crowd...

Obey "hates" the war...

And that's why he's drafting a whopping big $105 billion bill to pay for more war.

And if that kind of logic makes sense to you, then you've been in Washington too long. Because back here in Wisconsin it seems completely crazy - and that's because it is crazy.

Let's look at Obey's "anti-war" plan, shall we?
1) Troops can only stay in Iraq past the end of this year if George W. Bush "certifies" that we are making progress in Iraq. And when has George W. Bush ever not certified that we're making progress in Iraq?
2) Troops can't be sent into battle without adequate training unless George W. Bush certifies... - oh well, you get the idea.
3) By late 2008, the U.S. must withdraw all "combat" troops from Iraq, excepting of course: a) troops that are "fighting terrorists" b) troops that are "training the Iraqi military" and c) troops that are "guarding Iraq's borders." Is there any soldier currently in Iraq who could not be kept there under one of the above pretexts?

And Dave Obey has the nerve to expect us to be grateful for all this?

New Headline Required

The Congressman is clearly NOT yelling at the "marine mom." He is raising his voice because they are disrespecting him by not listening to his answers and pushing an agenda that does not respect him and the Congress.

If one is going to go out of their way to push an agenda through disrespect and willful ignorance they should not be portrayed as victims by media outlets. You could have written a better headline along the lines of "Agenda Pushing Lobbiests Get An Earful After Disrespecting Powerful Congressman." While I am not a copywriter I feel that this new headline would be more accurate and entice me to read further.

Realistic? What is realistic?

It seems realistic to me that Bush will attack Iran and widen the conflict enormously. Iran will not lay down. It will fight back and for a long time. The fascists in the White House, and they are really, not metaphorically, fascists will then have Americans terrified into supporting nuclear genocide. Realistically, we must look at this horrible scenario. It must be stopped now! How, realistically do people like Obey do this? They can do two things: they can forbid it now! They can start investigation after investigation of the White House and the scum that they support, eg Hilliburton. A de-legitimated Bush is a weakened Bush. Bush, like Hitler and Mussolini, want a world war-- that realistically is what we are up against! The Democrats who say they don't want to weaken the President are no better than he is, just like Germans who disagreed with Hitler, but didn't want him weakened. How unrealistic can you get?

Arrogant Harassed Senator Does not Control His Temper

Yes...I did watch the video completely thru. This arrogant representative was yelling with anger at the end while the "liberals" (read dirty word) were working hard to be considerate and modest voiced. From his repeated "condemnation"... ...YOU LIBERALS and heavy tableless down-jabbing of his fisted finger and his definite heavy voice, he was not interest in allaying these people's concerns but in reinforcing his position as a big shot representative.

He also whined that he couldn't get enough votes to end the war and that he was "working" on a resolution to end the war.

As to our "responders"...I used to really worry about people who would respond by saying we should "respect" these people..you know, like they are higher on the food chain than we slobs. But a little research shows that 20+ percent of the "average American adults" are frozen in their grammer school mind sets... "GOSH don't make waves. We HAVE to respect him". Kiddees who are appalled at any sign of "disrespect". They make good republicans and cannon fodder.

Respect?

Can someone explain to me when questioning an elected official became "disrespectful"? The two people questioning Obey were very polite, and very respectful in their tone and their questioning.

Obey, however, was rude and very disrespectful to two members of the voting public. Last I checked, he answers to his constituents, not the other way around.

Where can you get the votes? Try sticking your neck out a little farther Mr. Obey. Try taking a risk and shaking a few trees and see what happens. When the majority of Americans want the war ended but the Congress refuses to listen, just who's interests are they representing? If the Congress is this impotent to stop something of this magnitude, then the US system of government is totally corrupt and irreparable. What happened to "government of the people, by the people, and for the people".

When you have a Congress that is controlled by political interests and lobbyists, you have "government of the people, by the few, for the wealthy".

Welcome to the new American Dream...a lazy afternoon nap no one seems to want to wake up from...

You want to make change? Hold your elected representatives accountable for their actions. Voice your displeasure! Write, email, call your Congressman. Hound them, over and over. Tell them what you want and what you expect from them. Tell them that if they don't listen, you'll use your power (your vote) to remove them from office next time around.

Holding an elected official accountable, asking them questions, demanding action from them is not disrespectful. In fact, it's the way the system is SUPPOSED to work!

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Dave Obey (D-WI) released the following statement today:

“Monday, a group of people, not my constituents, approached me as I was rushing to a meeting and we wound up having an argument.

“I am sorry that I yelled at them. I respect their passion on the issue; I wish they would respect mine. We are both frustrated, and that led us to have an argument that we never should have had because we both want to see an end to U.S. involvement in that war. What divided us was the question of how.

“When they were arguing that I should vote against the legislation that I am sponsoring, they did not know that the proposal would in fact give the House its first opportunity in the four years of this misguided war to vote on a timeline for bringing it to a close.

“I would hope that the president’s announced intention to veto that legislation because of the timeline would convince these folks to reconsider their opposition to it.

“This is just another example of how Americans have become needlessly and painfully divided on a war that I have opposed from the beginning and that the President should never have misled us into.

“I intend to continue to press forward to pass this legislation because it is the best chance we have to bring our involvement in that civil war to a conclusion.”

and in support of the troops

In recognition of their bipartisan effort to help American servicemen and women, the Association of the United States Army recently named Congressmen Dave Obey (center right) and C.W. Bill Young (R-Fl) (center left) their 2005 Outstanding Legislators of the Year. The award was presented by Retired Gen. Gordon R. Sullivan (far right), President of the Association, who noted that he was “pleased to honor two true patriots who have proven themselves to be great friends of the Army as an institution, and supporters of soldiers, and their families.”

“Whether we like the war or not, we owe our respect and support to our nation’s warriors,” Obey told the members of the Association gathered for the award presentation. “That’s exactly what Bill Young and I have been trying to do. Of course, it’s nice to be recognized for our work.”

In addition to working to ensure that American troops have the equipment and supplies - like body armor and up-armored vehicles - that they need, Obey and Young have fought to provide American men and women in uniform with better healthcare, increased wages and decent benefits for them and their families.

...by this video, but to me it just shows the frustration of people like this congressman because the Democraps in general will not show up and vote for even a resolution against this Idiocracy.

We expect the Repukes to "stay the course." The only solution now is to hopefully vote more of the idiots out before there is nothing left to recognize about this country.

I really feel sorry for the woman and her Marine son, but another way to stop this war is to continue to NOT have kids enlist. I do not have any sympathy for anyone that signs up now or within recent times when it should have become apparent that this war is criminal to say the least.
