In the first clip from this past weekend's Black Church Summit, courtesy of Pam Spaulding, Rev. Dr. Michael Eric Dyson notes that the only time right wing white evangelicals have anything to do with black churches is to cater to their homophobia and that there's no asterisks in the Bible about whom we should love....

In the second, Dyson attempts to explain why the homophobia in the first place -- and connects the homophobia and homoeroticism in the church and in Hip Hop...

Blacks should know better!

Anytime that a suppressed group either Black, Red, Yellow or any race or religion who know what its like to be treated and seen as inferior by some facists beings that have the audacity to rule malevolently over us all- and for a "minority" to agree with such a hateful and oppresive faction- HAS LEARNED NOTHING from the tradgedies they and their ancestors have experienced.

Its is sad and pathetic and also the reason this will continue to repeat itself until our ultimate destruction.

Black America would do well to listen to this good doctor. Embrace love- Turn your back on hate.

It is just this simple, which is probably why it eludes stupid narrow-minded bigot racists.

If we do not learn from our mistakes- we will be condemned to repeat them over and over until either we get it- or be elimated and another species gets a shot.

One of things Dr. Dyson doesn't address is that right wing promoting this hatred is a means of keeping people from confronting oppression of the poor. Well he may adress it in the other video that is missing lol. Another issue is the fear of homosexuality that the right wing takes advantge of and manipulates. People fear the unknown and as long as Pat Robertson has his followers thinking he can convert hay people he will get their money.

Too Much Monkey Business for Black People To Be Involved In...

Dyson takes as (false) premise that heartfelt genuine acceptance of a given 'lifestyle; can be the proper subject of legislative determinations originating in either the secular or religious realms. You can't enact a state of love..neither by Church canon nor by State statute. For some, tolerance of and respect for differing 'lifestyles' is best expressed by keeping that which they neither care nor want to embrace at arm's length. I don't believe there is anything in Scripture that requires an affirmative, assertive proclamation of 'love' for whomsoever. Of course absence of 'love' doesn't imply a presence of hate.
Moreover the notion that the object of my enemy's derision is
necessarily my ally is misbegotten;some of the most
ruthlessly racist oppressors of Blacks, past and present, were (are) members of the LBGT group.
There is a certain irony in that the Black strict interpretation of a religion that itself was often the primary accomplice of racist colonialism serves as grounds for not 'embracing' another
often racist group

Rev. Dr. Dyson never said that Black people are more homophobic

As a White lesbian I often challenge other White people who casually state that Black people are more homophobic than White people. The title of this story continues people down a misleading path and misrepresents the content of this video clip. Rev. Dr. Dyson is talking about manipulation used by some White evangelicals - an important and different topic.

I like to remind people that the Black Congressional Caucus is one of the strongest supporters GLBT rights in Congress.

Two reasons in my opinion

I don't think the reason has that much to do with white evangelicals, although their homophobic influence is reactionary and pernicious throughout our entire culture, it's true.

I think more blacks are homophobic than average Americans because

1) one looked-down upon and oppressed group - particularly young males tends to want to find another minority group to act out the same upon to make themselevs feel better about themselves.

2) more blacks tend to have old-fashioned less enlightened views of masculinity and femininity and more rigid stereotypes thereof.

To the commenter who said that The Bible does not direct people to love unconditionally, I would suggest that he or she does not understand the true message of Jesus, which is unconditional love.
