The Libby verdict, increasing chaos in Iraq, the Walter Reed debacle, tanking polls -- the Republican shit is hitting the fan.

Which may well be why Bush is in South America "pushing Democracy" to a region that already loves Democracy -- just not the U.S. so much, according to the latest PIPA poll.

Adding to GOP woes is the revelation of the politically-motivated firings of at least 6 U.S. Attorneys by the Alberto Gonsales-led Justice Department. DoJ claims they were for "performance-related" issues but the reality is, all had received positive reports.

One of the fired attorneys, David Iglesias (the inspiration behind the Tom Cruise character in "A Few Good Men"), appeared before a Senate Committee to testify to the suspicious series of phone calls he received at home from Republican lawmakers in his state, New Mexico.

One came from Rep. Heather Wilson (R-NM) who was embroiled in a difficult race for reelection and sought information about indictments against her political opponents -- a possible violation of House Ethics Rules, according to CREW (UPDATE: An ethics complaint actually has to be filed by a member of the House).

The other came from Sen. Pete Domenici (R-NM), who hung up on him just a few weeks before his firing, although Domenici is having a hell of a time keeping his story straight.

Watch the testimony above right....

Update: Over the weekend, the Chairman of New Mexico's Republican Party claimed that after urging Rove to fire Iglesias, Rove told him "He's Gone."

Ya know..Are all Repugs taken from of a pool of diminished capacity thugs? How to use your title/position in intimidating others. New Mexico voters should get these miscreants out of office as soon as possible!

LCP,
i agree, if they're gonna be this corrupt they need better training at it. I guess they got so drunk on power that they thought there was no way they were ever gonna lose and therefore never have to face repercussions for un-ethical/illegal behavior. With a strangle-hold on OUR democratic prinicples and institutions, there was NO WAY they were ever gonna investigate their own transgressions, they were way too busy investigating the faulty zipper on a previous president and stuffing their own pockets with our tax dollars. What a glorious product we as Americans have received from the wonderful little Contract On, er, uh, i mean, With America the morally deficient Repukies brought us. I don't mean to say that Democrats are perfect nor that all Republicans are evil incarnate, i think it is more a question of ideology and right now our elected government officials are being indoctrinated into an ideology of corruption and self-servitude rather than public service. It'd be nice if a truly progressive party broke off from the Democratic Party and a truly (what's the word i'm looking for here?) hateful/bigoted party broke off from the Republicans so that the stalemate and parsing over words and failures of our government to do the will of the people who elected it could be pinned on those who truly deserve it, 1) "Blue Dog" Dems 2) pretty much the entire current crop of Repiggies. If the truly hateful and bigoted Rs formed their own party, actual conservatives and principled Rs (like Specter for one) could actually vote the way their constituents want and not withe BS being forced on them by Rove etc. I hope this period breaks open the illusion of "conservative" government and exposes it for the failure of humanity that it is and subsequently is never heard from again.

I was more than a bit confused by the assertaion that David Iglesias was the "inspiration behind Tom Cruise's character in A Few Good Men." I remember when the film came out seeing some human interest stories that revealed some lawyer in Virginia being the "inspiration". Looking at Wikipedia now, that rememberance seems confirmed as they identify Don Marcari as that person and the name definitely rings a bell so I think they have it right. How old was David Iglesias when A Few Good Men came out anyway?
