The Democrats are feeling their oats on the Iraq issue, due in no small part to Feingold's relentless pursuit of a real stance, a real policy.

In this clip, hat tip to Bob Geiger, Harry Reid puts his foot down. Unofficial transcript below:

you can run but you can't hide. we are going to debate iraq

and they may have gotten all their folks over there to vote against motion to proceed, they may stop us temporarily from debating the escalation, but they are not going to stop us from debating iraq.

3,100 soldiers, sailors, and marines. they are dead, madam president. we don't know the exact number of how many have been wounded. 24,000, 25,000. we are not going to allow the situation in iraq to continue. it is wrong, madam president. there can be no military solution. the president's been told that.

i think i it speaks volumes when he -- i think it speaks volumes when he meets with the iraqi prime minister, who is elected, and the iraqi prime minister said, mr. president of the united states, get all american soldiers out of baghdad. that's what he said.

Joshua adds …

Chuck Hagel, the GOP's anti-war "maverick," voted to block the debate on Bush's escalation. That is, he voted to block debate on his own resolution.

And remember this, from Republican Senator Gordon Smith in December?

"I, for one, am at the end of my rope when it comes to supporting a policy that has our soldiers patrolling the same streets in the same way, being blown up by the same bombs day after day. That is absurd. It may even be criminal."

Yesterday, the Senator decided he had a bit more rope left in him for this possibly "criminal" war, and joined Hagel in voting against the debate [ht: Bart Acocella].

Principles. They're a beautiful thing.

Nice to see Senator Reid grow some balls. Now, if only balls were contagious, maybe he could get the rest of his colleagues (Feinstein and Obama excepted) to grow some balls. Or maybe the Democratic Congress will just keep talking while American kids are killing and dying...

Reid and Lieberman voted with the GOP. Coleman and Collins voted with the Dems. Johnson, Landrieu, Martinez and McCain didn't vote on the cloture motion [1].

The NYT reports that Mr. Reid changed his vote and sided with Republicans at the end, a procedural move to allow him the option to reopen the issue. What a strange rule.

Congress is posturing. They know full well to be reelected they better not antagonize Israel's lobbys. Therefore, everything will proceed according to the plans , which now mean mayhem in Iran. Then Syria.

Debating Debate

Watching the NewsHour interview Sen Mitch McConnell (Rethugllican-Ky) over this I got more and more pissed off. This 8-ball is discussing debate over what the Senate will debate (that's right, arguing over which meaningless , non-binding resolution they will argue about) and Ray Suarez, the interviewer, will not call him on it. Meanwhile, more American troops are being wounded and are dying.

When are these NeoCons going to get called on their BS? The voters clearly said in November that they were done with Iraq and Bush policy and wanted oversight and accountability. Bush used the Iraq Study Group as political cover through the holidays and then announces that he is going to INCREASE the number of troops even as his VP has the audacity to publicly state that he really doesn't care what the Congress thinks or does. Meanwhile, how many people have dies while Bush and his cronies have played this sick game?

The NeoCons in control of the GOP do not care about the troops and they damn sure do not care about the will of the American people. They care about towing the party line, spouting their talking points and dragging things out to buy Bush the time he needs to do what he wants.

We not only have a President and Vice President worthy of Impeachment- we have a number of Senators and Representatives worthy of removal from office as well.

about ending the war when he starts talking about the $100 billion that our new Democratic Congress is preparing to hand Bush, to continue the war.

Harry couldn't have a vote on his non-binding, hand-wringing, resolution? Too bad. Enough with the rhetoric, Harry. DO SOMETHING EFFECTIVE - like cut off the funding for the war!

And so much for the brilliant strategy of courting "anti-war" Republicans. Maybe it was worth a try, but that's over now. The best political strategy for Dems now is the make this a partisan issue by emphasizing Republican support for the war, and doing something themselves (see above) to stop it.
