Truthout interviewed 1st Lt. Ehren Watada to find out why he's chosen to be "the only known U.S. military officer to publicly refuse to be sent to Iraq." Video right...

Like the former football hero Pat Tillman, killed by "friendly fire" in a murky military cover-up, Watada believes the war is illegal and that "he is duty-bound as an officer under international and military conventions to refuse unlawful orders."

Tillman was a bit more colorful, saying: "You know, this war is so fucking illegal," according to his buddy Spc. Russell Baer.

Watada's court-martial begins today and he faces up to 4 years in prison and an Army dismissal. Things don't look too good for him as the Judge has already stated that he can't question the legality of the war...

Truthout also interviewed Watada's attorney Eric Seitz which you can watch HERE.

Then again this country has done hardly a damned LEGAL thing in and for the world. What a cosmic disgrace.

If your country wasn't rotten at the top, someone with the integrity of Lt. Watada would be president, rather than being court-martialled.

He is absolutely right about refusal to obey illegal orders. Remember Nuremberg!

Sort yourselves out, fast!

LT.Watada is quite right and I do hope he will be released with honors that are due him. As for President, its is extraordinary that all those people with ethics should be immediately voted for president. It is going to be quite crowded in 2008.

He is living up to the highest potential a human being can be.
I always assumed that soldiers would behave this way... and that all people would want to live up to high standards.
If this man is court martialled, then there is a lot wrong with the judicial system, and inherently, with humanity in this country.

Lt. watada his the real hero. We have had men throw themselves on grenades to save their comrades, we have had men put thenselves in the line of fire to protect their own.
This man is jeapordizing his freedom to protect his comrades from giving thier lives to to support an unjust and stupid War!
A Judge that has stated he will not consider the justification or legallity of of the the war has doomed Lt. watada's defense and any explanation of why he feels about his action.
God help us if we let our government continiue to do whatever they Damm well please, and to to hell with the American citizens!
