Feingold Justifies Cutting off Bush's War [VIDEO]

The good folks at PoliticsTV videotaped this Senate Judiciary Hearing on Congress's Constitutional Right to cut off funding for the war on Iraq.

There is no mealy-mouthed, namby-pamby speak here. In the Framers' brilliant design, Feingold says, Congress got the power of the purse, and the president got the power of the sword. They had the foresight to separate the two.

Of Cheney's recent pronouncement that Congress could not stop him and Bush from the War on Iraq, Feingold responded: "In the United States of America the People are sovereign, NOT the president..."

The video is over 7 minutes...

And don't miss Glenn Greenwald's post on our Senators' shifting opinions of Congress' ability to end a president's war. As you'd expect, many who demanded that Clinton set a timetable for withdrawal are suddenly singing a different tune...

He writes: "And Sen. McCain in particular made arguments in favor of Congressionally-mandated withdraw that are patently applicable to Iraq today. And he specifically argued with regard to forcible troop withdrawal that "responsibilities for that lie with the Congress of the United States." The Constitution hasn't changed since 1993, so I wonder what has prompted such a fundamental shift in Republican views on the proper role of Congressional war powers."

Just a thanks to Evan D. for the superb video clips he brings us. Today's clips about Negroponte and Global...Warming, and Waxman questioning the Philip Cooney edits of research on global warming were terrific. Keep at it, Evan.

When we finally get the will to cut off funding and bring the troops home, does that include the so called 'security forces' such as the Blackwater(?) mercenaries? I would hope we drag their sorry butts away from the war trough, but I've never been clear about their status.
Does anyone know?

That was a brilliant--and very needed--speech by Senator Feingold. All senators who oppose this rational approach should be scrutinized.

The first move should be to defund the contractors .All the no bid neocons who are stealing our money and stealing from the fighting men and women. I bet if we can retrace the funds for flack jackets we can find out who got the money. Same with the armor for the Humvees. My God out of the billions appropriated for this war the soldiers come first. Why do the republicans insist on sending soldiers into battle with out the tools they need. This has been going on for 4 years. And they intend to send more without proper tools. These are our friends and neighbors. The Blackwater forces are not legal .Who gave them the contracts and why. I am ashamed of our Military Brass who stood by and kept silent. I guess a career is more important then the troops. I think of all the Generals who cared for the troops in the past. This is the failure of people we entrusted to fight the good fight for us all. Eisenhower,Patton and Bradley are weeping for the failures of the Generals. They have reached a new low. Maybe now a few will stand up and be counted. Not wait for retirement to speak out. George cannot fire you all. Stand in unison for your troops and shout to the world that it is time to come home.
