UPDATED: Half-Million at DC Protest? [VIDEO]

On Saturday night, before reading any first-hand accounts of the DC protest, I wrote that, "In NY Times math 'tens of thousands' showed up, which means that anywhere from fifty to five-hundred thousand were there..."

According to a first-hand account from a close friend, the number was closer to 500,000.

Tikkun's Deb Kory wrote:

"The news media got this number from an unofficial, un-named police source..."

And that's the number they led with. Not the 400,000 estimate they received from UFPJ organizers quoted toward the bottom of the story. Not even a range. Not even an average. Kory continued: "We did not gather to protest the surge (though it was certainly one object of our protest); we gathered to protest the immorality of the Iraq War. We came to mourn the hundreds of thousands of lives lost to this meaningless war and to express our fears about being thrust against our will to the very brink of global chaos. We did not come to "march against Congress" as some of the media are claiming; we came to hold our elected officials accountable and to use the leverage we have in this so-called Democracy to try to correct for 5 years of political lunacy. We came to let our elected representatives know that if they press forward with their mandate to end the war, we will be here to support them. We came not only to protest, but to engage in dialogue with our elected officials (we will be "lobbying" on Capitol Hill on Monday). And, yes, we came to ask for a Presidential impeachment."

Danny Schechter, who supports protests as a part of a larger strategy, critiques the peace movement: "I think its kind of important to get this message out to the people through the media, and not just the message that there’s opposition to the war but that there’s a movement opposing it. We need to show activism in action as a way for citizens to try to hold politicians accountable and participate in the process. Did that double message get through?

This approach requires a media strategy--and a challenge to the media— beyond sending out press releases and getting on Pacifica radio outlets.

...

There needs to be some discipline too and a better presentation. Personally I think Dennis Kucinich has a strong message--but he shouldn't be given time on the program just to hype his campaign. That shows no respect for the movement. We need some independent journalists to really analyze this movement's strengths and we[a]knesses, a former peace movement organizer told me. In that sense the numbers issue is not necessarily the only issue even if it does deserve comment. Another criticism I heard was that indy media was not represented with no blogger speaking.

Another analyst spoke to the importance of protests: "the idea of building a movement around an issue -- connecting, mobilizing, feeling part of something bigger, not being alone for those who came from small communities, being encouraged by the hundreds and thousands of allies and colleagues... is a fundamental part of protest marches, especially for young people who go for the first time. And everyone of the marchers is connected to families, friends, co-workers, etc. who hear back. Elected officials do pay attention..."

UPDATE: Bob Herbert, NY Times columnist, adds: You can say what you want about the people opposed to this wretched war in Iraq, try to stereotype them any way you can. But you couldn’t walk among them for more than a few minutes on Saturday without realizing that they love their country as much as anyone ever has. They love it enough to try to save it.

Its always amazing. How many hydrocarbon chains had to be broken and burned to fly the elites to the march, run their towncars, and wash all the linens in their fancy suites? Hypocrites the lot of them. They have so much money its amazing- and only proof of the publics' stupidity. However, they never seem to put their money where their mouth is. There is enough money in Hollywood to make some REAL changes. Instead they would rather have private award ceremonies, private fund-raisers for corporate shills like Hillary, and buy huge estates ruining the environment. And yet the public admires these people? Amazing.

All Antiwar help welcome

I don´t know how much money the Hollywood stars that are protesting the war make, but I do know that there are not a few of them that have lost work for being outspoken. Granted, Jane Fonda being silent so long, then suddenly making her appearance on the anti-war scene does arouse some suspicion. But I certainly welcome help in the cause against the war, wherever it comes from. The war must be stopped, Bush must be stopped, and I´ll go further than that: Bush must be impeached. He lied to us - not about a sexual fling, but about a war that has cost tens of thousands of human lives IN VAIN. Impeachment.
Money certainly helps the cause. But remember those three words entoned so often by the late Frank Zappa: REGISTER TO VOTE.

500,000 = 1/2 a million- is my math off? is this correct ?
If the headlines read "1/2 a million"- or "almost 1/2 a million" is that more eye- catching? yes, it is.
It was surprising to me the event was reported, on local and cable news and in the X. Well- the rest of the world must have seen it. Congrats to the organizers and participants.
The media has been ignoring vigils, marches etc since the start.
Basically they did ignore it. Snippets on every channel.
We are fortunate to receive Canadian tv News with Cable. The photography always gives a much better view of the crowds. Americans never get to See the size of a crowd except on New Year's Eve in Times Square; or if it were a "1/2 million Mexican students" or "1/2 million Irani"-or a "1/2 million soccer fans": only then is the Number seen as "Overwhelming".
American outlets only cover 'celebrities'.....which is why they are invited to be seen at these events. In the meantime- we are treated to babes in arms, in strollers, 6 year olds with signs- in effect, saying, Look at how cute I am and my mother chose to not abort me. tug tug away, at a right to privacy.
If possible, find CBC on your cable or satellite channels.
It is now our "Radio Free America"- it is the saddest turn of affairs- to rely on another country for a "clear channel".
btw The x ran another article, interestingly- on the fact that we can no longer rely on radio for help in local or national emergencies......we, just like Iraqi families, now rely on our cell phones.
Is this part of "God's plan", too ? LOL

Satillite Pictures?

How about someone in the alternate news media getting satillite pictures of the crowds and have them independently analysised for a better perspective of the number who gathered?

Or would that be asking too much from the alternative media?

Especially after having to backtrack (just a bit) while promoting her last movie.

She always will be one hell of a courageous woman.

It will make absolutely no difference whatsoever. Just like it did the last time.

Peaceful protest isn't going to make any difference. (and no, I am NOT advocating breaking the law in any way shape form or fashion)

The People Must DEMAND IMPEACHMENT

It is clear that Bush/Cheney don't care what the Congress says because they are sure Congress will DO nothing. The only way to stop The Decider and Deadeye Dick from doing exactly as they please in Iraq, and from finding an excuse to attack Iran is to IMPEACH THEM BOTH.

Since Nancy Pelosi says impeachment is "off the table" it is up to us to put it back on the "front burner" by telling our representatives that we WILL NOT SUPPORT their re-election if they do not take action to remove these criminals from office. We need to deluge our local newspapers with LETTERS TO THE EDITOR because they choose what to print based on the number of letters on a subject. We need to CALL RIGHT WING TALK SHOWS--forget the "friendlies" we don't need to "preach to the choir". TELL LOCAL AND STATE OFFICIALS that you care about their position on Iraq, even if they don't have a vote in Congress because most of them have a lot of clout in their Party's national organization. SHOW UP AT THE NEXT LOCAL PEACE MARCH , OR THE NEXT NATIONAL MARCH or, CONTRIBUTE MONEY even a fraction of what it would cost to attend will help. I sent United for Peace and Justice $100 and bought the T-Shirt for the 1/27 DC March. DO SOMETHING--I know it works because I was part of the movement that ended the Vietnam War.

If we keep up the pressure, a Republican delegation like the one that made Nixon resign will be knocking on Bush/Cheney's door. I don't care that their motive will be to save the Republican Party--the result will be to stop the incompetent puppet and his puppet master from compounding the damage they have already caused to this Country and the World.

Easily Half A Million Folks

There were easily half a million very well meaning people at the Saturday march. Maybe more! The densely packed crowd stretched all the way around the Capitol while others were still just starting to March. I was there, and there was no ignoring that crowd. Of course our pathetic so called media and mealy mouthed so called leaders will ignore it. At their peril regarding re-election or being taken seriously.

Of course, the media always ignores our crowds. This is the very same media that supported and repeated all of Bush's lies that got us into this failed illegal invasion. If one person says anything pro-Bush it's "many feel Bush is good" if two gather it's "a crowd of Bush supporters" but if a 1/2 million or more of us gather it's "tens of thousands" or "no estimates".

The media created and perpetuates a myth that the media coverage of the 60's anti-war demonstrations "lost" the US Vietnam. It's a lie, and those that believe and perpetuate the lie have led us in a big circle back to yet another Vietnam.

It was US atrocities, its lies, its lack of knowledge, its pretense to democracy while creating a death loving empire, the deep corruption in our ruling class, and the strength of the Vietmen that "lost" that war. This "war" is lost as well. Ignoring all the protestors will not "win" it. Someday media, tell the truth, and let's quit going in circles, and finally build a better new world.
