Colbert nearly breaks free of his persona to eviscerate Dinesh D'souza's truly disgusting contention that America's liberal culture was somehow asking for 9/11.

As Slate's Timothy Noah notes, D'Souza has "Mullah Envy," decrying progressive values somewhat in agreement, apparently, with Osama Bin Laden.

If one of the right wing's favorite epithet's is "the blame America first crowd," does D'Souza lead the way now? Far as I can tell, the only personalities of note that have actually blamed America for 9/11 are Jerry "witches, lesbians etc" Falwell and now D'souza.

Quick question: why would anyone care what D'souza thinks? He was wrong on Iraq and I have trouble remembering anything he's been right about... if you do, please note it in comments.

Hat tip to John Harrison on this clip...

Joshua adds ...

I rather liked Michael Berubé's take on the book:

According to D’Souza, 9/11 was brought to you by people legitimately outraged by the sexual liberty of women, gay marriage, birth control, and no-fault divorce. Not to mention Bill Moyers. For who can forget Osama bin Laden’s searing videotape of fall 2001, in which he speaks of “eighty years” of Arab “humiliation and disgrace,” calls for the restoration of the Caliphate, and condemns the United States for “no-fault divorce” and its impact on the traditional family? “Your Barney Frank has always repelled me,” added bin Laden in the October 2004 tape that is widely credited with boosting George Bush’s re-election campaign. “I was most pleased when your Dick Armey called him ‘Barney Fag,’ and I urge your homosexuals to stop abusing the freedom to choose their life partners. Also, your Michael Moore is considerably overweight.”

Digg!

The Shah of Iran... who we installed after destroying a democracy in Iran.

Yes, Bin Laden got his start in Afghanistan... after the US got involved in the fight.. and then abandoned the country after helping destroy it.

Gay marriage... only happens in one state.

You can thank "liberals" for the end of slavery, the fact that this guy can even appear on American TV with skin of that color, civil rights, etc..

Yes, show them the traditional America... colonialism, slavery, oppression of women (gee... just like Bin Laden wants) I'm sure radical muslims would LOVE that!

Foreign policy reasons? Culturally depraved? Could he be talking about the way we have destroyed nations around the world and tried to keep the mid east as a lapdog for our oil consumption... rather than the fact that people all the way around the world live differently than Muslim law dictates???

Just more partisan crap cherrypicking "facts" to score brownie points. Just another distorted view of our history and foreign policy to underwrite empire.

Okay, this guy is entitled to his opinion that liberals are the cause of all evil. If you listen to him talk, his arguement isn't nearly as inflamitory as his book title. It's in fact obvious after hearing what he has to say that the title of the book is more about selling copies that actually reflecting his views laid out in the book. How come no one is mentioning what Carter is going through with his book? The right is pretty shameless...

The Biggest Problem with D'souza's Diatribe...

...is that no matter how incongruous he sounds to rational, mainstream Americans, the far right will be "Mega-Dittoing" their collective approval simply because D'souza marches in lockstep with the "Blame Americans First" crowd.

Whether it's terrorism, the economy or an asteroid striking the Earth in 20 years, the primary directive of the far right will be assigning blame to everyday working Americans.

D'souza is no different.

.. that the rest of the world has a warped picture of what America is. Much of the developing world, which is where most of the terrorist base comes from, is under the impression that America is truly the land of opportunity where everyone has money coming out of their ears. The real - and perceived - inequality of wealth is one of the biggest drawing points of America-haters, with a hatred of our culture a symptom, not a cause, for most.

America is not the only country with a cultural left, but it is the one that draws the most flak for it. I wonder why that is...

"Gay marriage only happens in one state." I come from that state and although I've been in the same heterosexual marriage for 42 years, I am a strong supporters of gay marriage. Why?? If you could see how happy the children of gays are now that their parents' loving relationships are recognized as a civil right and they and their family are not shamed and humiliated at every turn, then you too might get enlightened.
By making gay marriage a shameful thing we play right into the hands of bin Laden. We Americans would do well to clean up the cesspool of much of our entertainment industry (and I include much of the news industry). But we don't do this for bin laden--but for our own good. We still have our civil rights--or some of them....let's preserve the emerging civil rights of GLBT.

Purifying America

So let me get this straight. The 9/11 bombings were because America's lifestyle was too liberal and licentious? So that the bomber were really sending a message to America that they should adopt a purer lifestyle? In other words, they were working for the same goals as the Christian Conservatives? Hmmmm.

America is being singled out for reasons other than gay marriage and Paris Hilton, and that should be clear to anyone who spends some time thinking about it. It is a real pity that Bin Laden stoops to cultural morality in his videos, because it gives right-wingers like D'Souza the ability to then blame us for things that the neocons, for the most part, are actually responsible for.

What Mr. D'souza Conveniently Forgets:

...as do the majority of the right-wing sophists: The so-called "Cultural Left" is actually a profit-generating arm of right-wing corporate media.

The hedonism seen on TV and the movies has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with liberalism. The non-stop barrage of decadence that flows out of America is a tightly-orchestrated process of marketing more automobiles, cheeseburgers and cola to gullible consumers by titillating them with ever-more provocative sexual imagery.

Big business is responsible for the America's image abroad - not liberalism.

If you accept the premise that the attacks came from Osama bin Laden, then ultimately you must blame America, or at least those who claim to be her public servants. He was your creation. He was a CIA asset. Probably still is.

If you don't accept that the attacks came from bin Laden, well, you see where I'm going with this.

Ronald Reagan. What a great guy!
He gave Osama bin Laden two billion (yes, billion) dollars cash and thousands of hours of CIA training for his closest followers on the premise that Osama would use these things to fight the Soviets in Afghanistan. Not considering for a moment what might happen after the Soviets left.
He sold weapons to both sides in the Iran-Iraq War, including the infamous "WMD's", making himself an official "war-monger". (If anyone has any doubt about this, look up the definition of war-monger.)
These and many others of good old Uncle Ronnie's covert actions are what made international terrorism in the twenty-first century possible. Thanks, Ron! Burn in Hell!

Just like a neocon.... so blinded by greed and the possiblity that he might sell ONE book to an audience completely against everything he stands for that he shoots himself in the foot, time and time again.

You could see the sales counts drop second by second before your very eyes.

Proving neocons are suicidal, and suicidally desperate to make a buck. Like moths drawn to a flame, burning themselves to death.

Pathethic. If only they didn't have the power to set the entire world on fire, it would be truly hilarious.

by constantly interrupting his guest. He seems to like to hear himself talk and is not really interested in serious interviewing. Dinesh has always had outrageous (in my opinion) views that are relatively easy to refute. Too bad Colbert is not good at doing so.

Did you catch that huge lie Disouza slipped in there about Reagan bombing Qaddafi and removing him from the terror game?

Demonstrably FALSE. Reagan bombed Libya in 1986; Lockerbie happened in 1988. Oops!

Yet another example of a right-wing nutjob not letting any facts get in the way of his truthiness...
