John Edwards took the podium at Riverside Memorial Church in Manhattan on Sunday to speak against escalation in Iraq and to push for withdrawal. It's the same podium at which Dr. Martin Luther King spoke out against the Vietnam war back in '67.

The speech is broken into three parts. An excerpt:

Escalation is not the answer, and our generals will be the first to tell you so. The answer is for the Iraqi people and others in the region to take responsibility for rebuilding their own country. If we want them to take responsibility, we need to show them that we are serious about leaving - and the best way to do that is actually to start leaving and immediately withdraw 40-50,000 troops.

That is why I have spoken out against the McCain Doctrine of escalation. That's why Congress must step up and stop the president from putting more troops in harm's way.

If you're in Congress and you know this war is going in the wrong direction, it is no longer enough to study your options and keep your own counsel. Silence is betrayal. Speak out, and stop this escalation now. You have the power to prohibit the president from spending any money to escalate the war - use it.

And to all of you here today - and the millions like us around the country who know this escalation is wrong - your job is to reject the easy way of apathy and choose instead the hard course of action. Silence is betrayal. Speak out. Tell your elected leaders to block this misguided plan that is destined to cost more lives and further damage America's ability to lead. And tell them also, that the reward of courage is trust.

Digg!

Thank you Senator Edwards. Further, we betray OURSELVES when we do not give voice to our conscience. That is one of the most insidious things about the political proliferation of fear that has been foisted upon us with the complicity of the MSM...when we are afraid to give voice to our deepest concerns, we begin to die inside. There is a reason that FREEDOM of SPEECH is the FIRST amendment to our Consstitution.

Time to Talk with Iran!

Our European allies say we need to talk with Iran. The Baker-Hamilton Iraq Study Group believes we must talk with Iran. Even new Secretary of Defense Robert Gates thinks we should talk to Iran.
Yet President Bush stubbornly refuses to talk with Iran, Secretary of State Condolezza Rice has also dismissed the idea, and reputable sources suggest the Bush administration is continuing to plan a possible military strike instead. Indeed, CBS News reported this week that the Pentagon is planning to increase its military presence in the Persian Gulf, sending a second aircraft carrier to the region. Such military maneuvers can only serve to escalate any conflict with Iran - as is perhaps this administation's desire and plan.

An attack on Iran would be insanity. It's time for diplomacy, not another war. To stabilize Iraq, to promote peace in the Middle East, and to address their nuclear program, it's time to talk with Iran!
As a first step in opposing what would be a catastrophic war with Iran, and in promoting the direct negotiations that would prevent such a calamity as well as helping to stabilize the situation in Iraq and the Middle East, please sign the "No War with Iran" petition below. More than 40,000 have signed it already, 22,000+ on this site alone, and we intend to deliver it to the new Congress and the Bush Administration in early January.

Bravo, this is a great speech. I hope that Senator Edwards can be your next PResident. He would do the United States proud again.
