ABC News does its best to cover the American Christian "Quiverfull" movement in the videos to the right (a total of about 10 minutes).

There are some real issues with the underlying premises of the movement, namely that a woman's body is not her own, a return to male-dominated households, etc.

The family depicted comes across as quite nice and friendly, with the possible exception of the mother, who appears shriveled or cowed in some way.

Too bad this report wasn't hosted by a woman, and more specifically by a woman armed with a bit more knowledge of the movement, it's implications and even the most cursory understanding of feminist history.

That would've been really cool and cut down questions like the one asked to the mother (paraphrasing): Isn't it hard on your body having so many kids?

For a much more interesting critique of Quiverfull, read Kathryn Joyce's piece HERE.

Digg!

Disturbing, but not really surprising.

I believe Longman or someone with a similar name wrote a similar article arguing that patriarchy was going to win out because it encouraged men to have large, conservative broods.

Yes the mother creeps me out but then again she did have a toothache, so maybe she was quieter than she would have been otherwise. The whole 'submissive' thing is kind of creepy, even as it brings to mind leather-clad couples in San Francisco...

Insanity of religious belief

This is, IMHO, another example of the insanity of religious belief. These people are bringing ever more people, onto an already overburdened planet, who will compete with others for food, clothing, shelter, education, and healthcare. More food production needed, more pollution produced, and---b/c they're American---probably more warmakers. All for their imaginary friend in the sky. It's frightening.

No college for the females huh? Yeah right. Just wait until they get into their teens, no amount of ancient culture is going quench their desire to learn and be more than just a man's help-mate - at least for some of your poor daughters, the smart ones anyway.

Got to admit it, I couldn't help but want to knock the smirk off that arrogant misogynist's face.

There are several churches in our region who promote this movement. It's sick and utterly pathetic. I fear for my son and my daughter in such a culture.

Freak Show

Don't lose too much sleep over this "movement." It's nothing but a circus freak show.

Progressives need to focus their energy on things that are really important--the war in Iraq, global warming, health care, consumer debt, etc. The VAST majority (99.9%) of American women are not going to suddenly decide fulfillment is found only by having 30 kids.

The Quiverfull movement-- like the flat-taxers, global-warming deniers, young earth creationists and their ilk-- are all historical anomalies. Like those who once believed that the sun revolves around the earth, they too will pass away.

There are several things wrong and misleading about the video and the responses on this blog. First of all, there is no "quiverful movement" as such. A thousand or so people who use this kind of language do not make a "movement." However, if one wants to speak of a "movement," then recognize the thinking and the language has been around for thousands of years. Many primitive societies want "quiversful" (the word is a Biblical word so primitive societies do not use the language) for a variety of reasons. Many Christian communities emphasized large families not as a strategy to overtake any other groups or religions but because there is great fulfillment in family relationships. Plus, there is a Biblical injunction about being fruitful and replenishing the earth. The Mennonites and Amish are an example. My mother had 83 first cousins on her mother's side. She once remarked she was saddened because she knew of two of the 83 that had had divorces. The ones I knew (or know) had high regard for education and would be quite offended if they were accused of male domination. In terms of happiness and fulfillment I would put them up against any other group of people. It is the "me first" modern "progressive" generation that finds children a drawback to personal fulfillment and who not only limit their own families (abortion is a good way to accomplish this) but evidently want everyone else to do so also. So, in Germany now we are paying couples to have children. We do now have a new problem in the world--depletion of resouces, which necessitates a new interpretation of the "quiverful." After three children my wife and chose to increase our family only by adoption.

These people are friggin idiots. Their philosophy opens the door to molestation, spousal abuse, and a variety of other societal ills. The rate of child molestating clergy proves it. Back to the old so called Christian philosophy-keep em barefoot and pregnant. Makes me want to bomb all of these born again asshole churches.

Who can afford to be "Quiverfull"?

Notice that the only family willing to be interviewed for this story was a wealthy family that produces music videos for Nashville? Even they admit they can't afford to send their kids to college! I wonder how the fundamentalists who make $60,000 per year manage with 8 kids. This is a sure route to severe poverty.

What about rights of the individual?

We all live on this planet and must all get along.

The simple truth to this debate is that the religious right always seem to ignore the simple fact that its about the rights of the individual... or doesn't a person have the right to decide what is or isn't done to their body be it blood transfusions, abortion or the right to die.

The choice is rather simple, its between families (mother/father) & doctors and as as long as a doctor agrees with the decision made by the family involved every one else has no legal input as to what one person can do to their body.
Its the right of freewill, anything else is unconstitutional and Anti-American

Anyways, what does religion or morality have to do with a medical decision in the first place.
Is there a separation of church and state or not?

I always try to remember that one persons vision of heaven is anothers vision of hell.
I cannot comprehend spending eternity with a Falwell or the other brain dead freeloaders spinning hate outta love.

That was a policy by which SS men were licensed to have one sided consentual sex impregnating as many young woman as possible. It was a means of increasing the Aryan population of Nazi Germany. America's long had a fascist streak and this is just one more arrow in the quiver of the christian right. If you can't kill all those unbelievers then first out breed them then you can out compete them for the ever dwindling resource pie. It's a tried and true kind of an ethnic cleansing in reverse.
