"When my colleagues elect me as speaker on Jan. 4, we will not just break through a glass ceiling, we will break through a marble ceiling.... In more than 200 years of history, there was an established pecking order - and I cut in line."

I honestly didn't expect it. Piercing all the layers of cynicism, all the broken promises of America over the past 6 years and beyond, watching John Boehner hand the gavel to a purple-suited Nancy Pelosi (the color of the suffragettes) and declaring her the first woman to hold the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives, I got misty.*

And it's not just about watching Boehner, a symbol and embodiment of corrupt, embarrassing and ultimately impotent Republican leadership ceding power (one cutaway shows an astonishingly graceless Boehner unable to applaud for Ford's wife's loss, resembling some humbled ex-Wise Guy ostentatiously fixing his cuffs...).

Nancy Pelosi isn't likely to be a radical spokesperson for everything that progressives hold dear and she isn't likely to make AlterNet readers stand up and cheer with her every word. But beyond her likely ethics and efficacy we would do well to cheer the fact of her historic position and the strength of the individual woman who made it so.

As for her positions and policies, welcome to the progressive world, Speaker Pelosi. Man, woman, black, white, gay, straight, believer or atheist; if your ideas don't benefit the people of America and the world, you are going to hear about it.

For now I take the long view: A woman as Speaker of the House of Representatives is another indicator of the dominance of Progressive values over what Martin Luther King Jr. called the "[long] arc of history."

*This post is devoted to Maria Leavey, who passed away recently. She played a significant, if understated, role in the arc... Read more about her HERE.

is the traditional colour of royalty, not the women's suffurage movement. And in this context it is most likely more appropriate considering that both parties serve the same banking and corporate elites (and her family has a long tradition of 'city boss' style politics.)

the pomp and gushing arrogance of the ceremony was hard to take. pelosi is an ass. there are scads of women in leadership positions in other countries, and they haven't changed the system one iota.

they say rats have no friends.

Pelosi has already made a great stand for fascism and lawless, arbitrary rule by proclaiming "impeachment is off the table," and then strongarming John Conyers to parrot the same.

These people have no priniciples, no honor, no morality. They would applaud Hitler, and accomodate him as he needed. What they have done so far is comparable.

Bush's crimes have shattered the rule of law and burned the Constitution (with a lot of Democrat YES votes along the way). The Bush regime's actions in regard to the September 11th attack cannot be described without the word treason.

Pelosi's unmitigated support for the criminal and rogue state of Israel is a beacon of what is to come. She supports illegal wars of aggression against Syria, and -- perhaps -- Iran.

This is not a "change" at all. It can hardly be described as a course correction. On the greatest life and death issues of our time, Democrats are indistinguishable from Republicans. They are fascists.

As Gomer Pyle would say, "SURPRISE, SURPRISE, SURPRISE!"

Here we are yet again, just like 2004, as the fakeLeft with alternet in the lead, cheers on yet another zillionaire democratic politician. Well, I guess Pelosi is not QUITE as bad as Kerry--she is worth LESS than 100 million dollars.
Like maybe 50 million....
Follow the money, people. THe dems stink just as bad as the GOP....

[ I am curious as to whom is posting on alternet, lately. How old are you; where were you educated, who is paying you to post (?)]
The historical moment yesterday moved me to tears along with the author of this report.
Women earned the right to vote 87 years ago-
Our nation is over 200 years old.
One of our citizens' shortcomings (& comments on alternet) is a sad lack of historical perspective.
No matter which political party Mrs Pelosi represents, her election as Speaker of the House is a milestone.
Some men are intimidated by a strong woman (Mrs Clinton)....and some men hide behind skirts ( eg gwb,ie Laura, Mrs.Barb, and Harriet Meyers )
There is no gender attributed to a Good Idea ( except -from the Latin to Italian- "Buona idea" Fem. )
Mrs Pelosi is ready to accept accountability for her actions.
Nothing prepares one better for a power position than an education, ( including American & World History courses)
Motherhood and political experience.
It is time to Grow Up children and help "Mom" clean up the House and the mess this failed administration of privileged males has created.
I invite the youngsters lurking and posting Limbaugh/Riley comments here to obtain a student loan ( for which the Dems are trying to reduce the interest rate)
and join us in raising the level of discourse here and for our citizenry as a whole.

Those who allow themselves to be impressed by Pelosi's gender are not keeping their eye on the ball. The fact is nothing will change---Nothing. This is all sleight of hand to reinforce the balkanization of America. Men against women, tribe against tribe...divide and control. Don't be distracted by the grand pronouncements. Watch what she does about Iraq, the Mexican invasion or the gutting of the constitution and see what an achievement she is.

and a baby boomer who is like Mrs. Pelosi, a second generation American, I cannot tell you how proud I am of her. She's awesome and has worked hard and has rightly taken a place in history. She is the American Dream for which her grandparents sacrificed to come to American...which all immigrants share and want for their children and grandchildren, a better life.
For me this is historic for multiple reasons.

Our New Speaker of the US Congress

I have empathy for Nancy Pelosi as she attains the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives. She attains this position in a time when the patience of many, including me, is very thin. She begins her tenure as Speaker with a very confliected agenda one, in my opinion, which could easily lead to her demise as Speaker in short order. She appears to have not heard the voters in her own district who strongly advocate immediate withdrawal of US troops from Iraq. She appears for political reason to have chosen to take open, active investigation of Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney off the table to silence those advocating for impeachment. She has set herself a course of action for her Democratic party which is not in keeping with the folks who put the Democratic in control of Congress. She has chosen a difficult route. Though i disagree with her, I wish her God's speed and wisdom.

Don't you love the whiners? I do. I knew there'd be a bunch of nancy boy, Repiglikan pansies screaming about how Pelosi and the Dems aren't any different, or how bad things are going to be....

LOL! Keep crying you sissies.

Things have to get better simply because the party of traitors, pedophiles, thieves, racistists, cowards and draft dodging slime are gone.
No more PNAC. No more slaves of Israel in control.

Real Americans now rule the roost and soon we'll be rid of your coward pResident. :)
So by all means, keep posting your whiny-assed drivel. The Left (your new masters) is laughing at you.

So big deal. Another woman. A lot Condi did, Hillary did, huh. These women play it safe, careful and don't make waves. There is nothing remarkable about their leadership. They get leaned on and they cave.

I want someone with power and guts. Man or woman, white or black, brown or whatever. I just want to see real leadership representing WE THE PEOPLE, not some fool kissing ass for their rich ol' cronies.

I trust few politicians, and she's not one of them. But because she's a she, I'm glad she won. Let's face it - having so few good choices in leadership, I'm just grateful that more dangerous sociopaths (Bush Gang) are outta' there.
