Tony’s world:

Q: As the President is sort of making his calculations, is he factoring in sort of what the American people have a stomach for?

MR. SNOW: You know, it's interesting, if you take a look at poll data -- and there's a lot of discussion about that -- what's interesting is that a majority of the American public not only thinks that we're capable of winning, but we should.

Real world:

Americans believe the war in Iraq is going badly and getting worse…

Opposition to the war is now taking on historic proportions, with 62 percent saying it was "a mistake" to send U.S. troops to Iraq — slightly more than told a Gallup Poll in 1973 that it was a mistake to send U.S. forces to Vietnam.

Only 15 percent of Americans — the lowest number ever — say the U.S. is currently winning the war. And for the first time, a majority (53 percent) believes it's not likely that the U.S. will ultimately succeed.

… 85 percent now characterize the situation there as a civil war.

Tony Snow will have a legacy. The White House's various press secretaries have always spun and dodged, but he’s the first to look the American people in the eye and just lie outright -- he’s setting a precedent.

Why not lie outright to the American people? It's worked for his boss for years....

OT - Mr. Holland, are you still writing that article with Sander Hicks?

Considering the response the Christopher Hayes article has received I would think AlterNet would want to put something more balanced online to counter the criticism it is getting.

Or is AlterNet worried about stirring that pot too much?

I hope that you and yours are well.

The truth shall set us free. Love is the only way forward.

Saddam is deposed, his weapons of mass distruction are gone, the Iraqi people are are free and no longer live under tyranny, terrorism is on the decline and freedom and democracy have been bestowed upon that once beleagured nation.

Surely the world is a better place for what we have done, most of all Iraq. The only thing we have to regret is that our soldiers didn't get the chocolate bars they were promised. What a rip-off!

president hasn't made up his mind yet? bullshit! he's just stalling, business as usual until they absolutely have to change something, up until recently it's been "stay the course" and not admit there's any other option, now they admit there may be other options but they're just going to keep staying the same course as long as the can get away with it

Of course Snow is lying, but I wouldn't say he's the first to look the American people in the eye and lie. Puffy McMoonface and Fleischer before him baldly lied every day. The press secretaries of this President have made a daily living on lies, far more so than any previous administration.

... and of course.. the First Shill, Laura Bush.. who only talks to media to spread white house propaganda because anyone who questions her on it or asks tough questions can be denounced for going after a "non-politician"... is now blaming the media for Bush's low poll numbers... as usual, citing the "theres lots of good stuff that doesn't get reported" line.. (yeah, and those spouting that line never seem to have any specifics on what all this great stuff that is going on is... or how it actually changes all the horrendous things that are happening in the least).

Bush's (not-so-)new strategy? Blame any and everyone that he possibly can.

Commercials sells goods and services. Buyers of goods and services pay the added costs to the goods, etc. Consumers do have some choice.
We, the manipulated by distortion and lies keep the the liars in power by defending and voting for them. It works! Again, we pay for the lies when we support the organizations that utilize lobbying for special legislative treatment. We do have a choice.
That is a return to a democracy where each vote has equal weight (influence) and participation is encouraged.

We need to take back our public space and establish an information network that promotes truth and fact that guarantees democracy and participation.

Renting frequencies for commercial interest should pay for it.

It's not correct to say we can't win in Iraq.

All we have to do is nuke it back into the Stone Age until nothing is left but smoldering rubble, and declare victory. No terrorists, no insurgents, no Sunnis, no Shiites, no Kurds, no worries. No morality, no ethics, no humanity either. And maybe no more USA.

Thankfully the ugly man will be gone. What a career filled with lies, deceit, black ops, fake moon landing films, and murder. Yep..Don Dumbsfeld...we hardly knew ya. Funny how the prisons are full of people who were caught with a joint or a pain pill in their pocket and are serving years..while people like Dumbya and Dumbsfeld are responsible for the most evil and vile crimes..the murder of over one million people and counting..yet they are celebrated and live in excess behind their gated communites. What a wonderful country we live in. Do a good deed today...rob a rich person.
