Many are up in arms about the Christian Embassy's corporate promo Pentagon Christ-tacular (video right), including the The Military Religious Freedom Foundation, which is seeking an investigation.

Essentially: did Defense Dept. employees break the law by appearing in uniform, explicitly lending the military's name to the Christian group?

It should be noted that Jeff Sharlet was the first journalist to mention the existence of the video in this month's Harper's cover story.

They should, of course, litigate -- it's important.

But the question goes deeper. What happens to Christianity and Government (never mind the military...) when one strand of Christianity has unusual access to power?

Sure, this video is bound to end up an essential part of any atheist-porn collection, but it ought to be as frightening to Christians as to atheists, agnostics, Jews, Muslims, and Americans who oppose the state establishment of religion -- which this approaches.

How the words of Jesus are compatible with the compromises of power are beyond me. History does not look highly upon past marriages of Christianity and Power and there's no reason to claim exception here.

It's also an awful blow to anyone trying to disabuse whole populations of the notion that the "war on terror" is actually a war of Christians on Islam. So it actually undermines national security as a bonus!

I'm just curious whether the director's cut will include Tom DeLay.

It's the Symbolism, Stupid

What is utterly fascinating, and equally disturbing, is the use of the Washington Monument in the background for an evangelical Christian message. The Washington Monument is an Egyptian Obliesk, originally used as a monument to the Egyptian sun-god, Ra. Obliesks and other Egyptian treasures became very fashionable in ancient Rome; so much so, that Romans sacked Egyptian towns for the loot in order to decorate back home. Thus, obliesks can be seen in numerous areas of Rome, including smack dab in the center of St. Peter's Basicilica. Here's the juicy part: the architecht commissioned to plan the new Washington, D.C. in the early 1800s, L'Enfant, was a passionate Freemason. If you do some research you can find many Freemasonry symbols in street layout's and positioning of various monuments. The obliesk is the most noticable of Freemasonry symbols, and it represents "the male", or sex organ, surrounded by a circle to represent the vagina wherever it is erected. Freemason's only allow men, and it's a secret and exclusive society which has 33 degrees. Each degree higher delves deeper into the occult. So, to have the Freemason symbol of a penis as the backdrop of an evalgelical Christian site is, well, ironic. Is it not?

I wonder what sort of reaction we'd see in the US media if high ranking pentagon and other government officials had stated that allah comes first, family second and the nation a distant third in order of priorities. Yes, there'll be an investigation, but this sort of thing is just the tip of the iceberg. My fear is that the sort of thinking shown on the video has permeated throughout the US government. What do they put in the drinking water over there. Has anyone in the US government actually ever read your constitution, bill of rights, etc.

There's a whole universe of religious fanatics with a hard-on for Washington DC power. Watch "God's Next Army", a Channel 4 in-depth-look at Patrick Henry College (video, webpage).

Or read this article on Patrick Henry College's infestation of the White House.

Maybe you should read the words of Jesus a little closer. While some of what is to have been said by him is of a loving and peaceful nature, much of what he said was full of petty malice and vile hatred towards non-believers.

I am afraid the United States is facing the most dangerous threat it has ever known and by its own citizens. Whether the Republic can withstand this deviation from its founding principles is highly unlikely. All things must pass, even this wonderful experiment of freedom and democracy will eventually. And not by any force outside of its boundaries.

Sick! Sick! Sick! From this video it appears that the US "military" is under control of religious zombies - penis worshiping zombies at that. This is NOT the US that I studied in school history classes. Where did it come from?

Christian meetings, working together... to make war???

... these people work in the PENTAGON. There's nothing Christian about making war. These people should remember that if they lie to St. Peter at the pearly gates like they are lying to themselves about what they do for a living... St. Pete will give'em the trapdoor for sure.

Thou Shalt Not Lie ... is not a joke to some Christians (I hate to bash, but it's getting to seem like the only Christians who don't take God seriously are Americans).

This is disgusting. Am I wrong to think that there needs to be an investigation and some ass kicking when I see at least two U.S. Congressmen talk on the record about going on a junket with this organization and evangelizing to the poor Ethiopians on their "Relationship With God"?

This latest trend of the fundamentalist Christian world to "infiltrate" and control our government needs to be stopped right now. It is terribly dangerous and historically unwise at best.

By the way, I think we are looking at the "Director's Cut" as I am pretty sure that Tom DeLay does show up in the last third of the video; although they didn't seem to want to put his name on screen.

...THAT THE BIBLE IS THE MOST GENOCIDAL BOOK EVER WRITTEN.

So it is not very surprising that the good Christians are some of the most hateful and destructive people on earth.

They can be patriotic symbols when that suits you or pagan, even demonic, symbols when that suits you.

Speaking of which, they should change the music. Definitely too New Age-y.

...the lot of them: Evil, hateful people. Thomas Merton. The Berrigans. Dorothy Day. The Jesuits. All were genocidal maniacs on par with Hitler, Stalin, Mao.

Painting with a broad brush is either abject ignorance or vituperative trolling (probably the latter). I'm certainly no fan of the nascent (and largely exclusionary and hateful) evangelical movement which eschews Christ's essential teachings in favor of radically right-wing neofascism, but castigating all Christians as a whole--let alone Christianity--is indicative of a fundamental disrespect of others every bit as vile as anything espoused by the worst right-winger. Makes it especially obvious that you don't know what you're talking about.

And the caissons of crap continue to roll along. Hopefully, our troops will not be smitten with the "turn the other cheek" side of Christianity. All this "love thy enemy" stuff will make war-winning hard work, as hard a work as being president of the US of A. Say, you don't suppose that's why things ain't goin' all that well in Iraq these days, do ya?

The first guy in the video was J.D. Hayworth (R) Arizona. I PERSONALLY helped get the obnoxious freak booted out of office! I am sooooooooo glad he is gone. He was *spanked* out in the mid term and (hopefully) won't see public office again!

I wonder how many other elected officials in this video were voted out as well? I am all for personal beliefs and following one's chosen path in life, I just don't want it inflicted upon me. Freedom, to me, = separation of church and state.

DAMN these in-your-face religionists! Religious practice should be treated like smoking: banned from most public places and strictly confined to specific areas, like the local landfill.

When will man tire of killing for Jesus and or God? And feel sooo very righteous about it! All the while borrowing the symbols and original holidays of a group, the pagans whom they condemn so routinely and vigorously.

When will they stop living in the very ways they condemn? Huh? Like when?

I for one am heartened by generals in our army and air force who can talk to God and hear Him speak. If we don't have fine men like these running our military, how are we gonna know when Kim Jong Il fires off a nuke at L.A.? Guys like these, who are basically walking antenas tuned into God, will get an early warning message (it will probably sound like Charleton Heston talking in their ears) waking them up at night, so they can defend us in plenty of time. Yes! America rules, baby! "Flashes heavy metal devil's horns with both fists."

Jesus died for my sins...now I can sin freely...

One of the women (I think the third person, ....I don't know who any of them are... in the film) talkes about having been a sinner, but Jesus died for her on his cross. Does that mean she can sin and sin without any consequence, because Jesus is dead already?
What convenient interpretation!
It seems it is the attitude of the good Christians there to have someone else take the fall, because they themselves are too cowardly and self centered to do the right thing in life. (Thou shalt not kill...)

I am thoroughly disgusted with the Christians in the Pentagon!
They are hypocrites, without acknowledging it.
(Or worse, still: without knowing it!)
We employed those people to work for us. In which case we as employers are guilty of sustaining incompetent employees.
When an employer finds out that an employee is not up to doing the job he/she was hired for, the employee is questioned or fired. They should be fired. Basta. Along with other people we all know.
Was the Pentagon asked to make a video of their religious beliefs?
Well, the video definitely shows of what mediocre intelligence the minds of those in the Pentagon are. (Not because of any religion, as it has nothing to do with those people, but because of their idiotic "confessions" and inane comments.)

This is disturbing on so many levels. These people
are arrogant, delusional, and unbalanced. What is
wrong with our system that weak willed contemptible
phonies like this are running our country? Are the
rest of us so self absorbed that we don't care or are
we being locked out by these hypocrites in power? Our
country is being changed rapidly by the mentality
shown in this video and only a few will be better off
in this New World Order. Investigate, illuminate and
prosecute these crimes (think Iraq) or we will all pay
a very dear price.

How the words of Jesus are compatible with the compromises of power are beyond me.

Really? I don't believe the common citizen got habeas corpus in England until the latter 1600s. Where was Jesus when human rights needed him the first 1600 years?

That is why it is sickens me to have seen some people around me, intelligent people, essentially giving up on contemporary ethical discussion and going with "What Would Jesus Do". Typically, the answer throughout history would be, "Stand back and let power do whatever it wants to people because our kingdom is not of this earth."

That is where the true barbarism of the American people shines. Dead white Europeans gave history two things: science and the Enlightenment. Science we usually love (as long has it cures diseases and doesn't push evolution too much) and scientific method has spread widely around the world. The Enlightenment not so much. Universal human dignity is apparently a tough sell. Whose fault is that?
