Thanks to reader Ken Pruett for notifying me that in my original post of the smackdown between Dave Letterman and Bill O'Reilly, I left out a major portion of the interview (transcript via A la Gauche).

In the clip to the right, Letterman smells O'Reilly's BS, telling him: "You're putting words in my mouth. Just the way you put artificial facts in your head."

And, in fact, O'Reilly's claim, in bold below, is unsupported by anyone who isn't a Bush apologist, including the CIA, the FBI, the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, and the National Security Council.

***

Letterman: But why didn't we stay in Afghanistan? Why didn't we stay in Afghanistan. It seems to me that Afghanistan was more directly the source. I mean there has been no tie proven between Saddam Hussein and al Qaeda, the Taliban, anything. Why didn't we stay there?

O'Reilly: You know what Ansar-al-Islam, do you know what that is? You don't. And I'm not saying this in a condescending way, I'm really not. Okay? I'm not going to call you a bonehead or a pinhead?

[laughter]

O'Reilly: Ansar-al-Islam was the al Qaeda affiliate in Northern Iraq who tried to poison the British water supply with Ricin. They operated with Saddam Hussein's okay. Again, complicated, but it isn't so black and white, Dave. It isn't, "We're a bad country, Bush is an evil liar."

O'Reilly: That's not true.

Letterman: I didn't say we were a bad country,

Letterman: I didn't say he was an evil liar. You're putting words in my mouth. Just the way you put artificial facts in your head.

Simplistic thinking

One of the advantages of the Republican Party is it can push simplistic thinking on dumb crackers. For these folks the world is very simple. Everything comes down to absolute good and evil. Social complexity, is seems, is a mere liberal invention to confuse all the good, G-d fearin' folk into inaction and frustration so that evil can win. How convenient this is for those with no analytical ability and no knowledge of any sort. Reading between the lines seems like a rare gift. It is not liberal or conservative, it comes from honesty and education and the true desire to understand beyond the facile pigeon-holed categories of conventional "wisdom!!"

O'Reilly once again uses the Republican technique of using a fact that undermines their argument to support it (like the anodized tubes).

Ansar al-Islam operated in NORTHERN Iraq- meaning in an area of Iraq that was controlled by the Kurdish rebels, and not by Saddam. They were committed to his overthrow, just as bin Laden was.

And once again, NOBODY seems to grasp that al-Qaeda is not an army, it is not a club, it is not an organization with a president and a vice president. It is much more so an ideology- a sort of end-times Islam. And these types HATE (what they consider) secular leaders, supported by the West- like Saddam.

There are several reasons that bin Laden turned against the US- remember that we were vaguely on the same side during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. The 1st Gulf War made bin Laden/ al-Qaeda types angry because
1) The US had troops stationed in (Saudi) Arabia, considered the holiest land.
2) The US would not allow the mujahadeen (again, loosely affiliated al-Qaeda holy war types) to join the coalition.

THEY OPPOSED SADDAM. O'Reilly is 180 degrees off.

HERE IS A QUESTION THAT PERPLEXES ME TO NO END.

WHY DO WE LISTEN TO LOUDMOUTHS PONTIFICATE ABOUT MATTERS IN WHICH THEY HAVE NO EXPERIENCE & IN MANY CASES THOSE AMERICAN LISTENING HAVE more EXPERIENCE?

VITRUALLY every WAR-MONGERING, PHONY PATRIOT LIKE TUSH, ANNIE-NO FANNIE, LYNNE & DICK, MICHAEL SAVAGE, MICHAEL MEDVED, O'REILLY, WOLFOWITZ, BECK, SCARBOROUGH, HANNITY, BOORTZ...AD NAUSEUM HAVE

NNNNNNEEEEEVVVVVVEEEEEERRRRRRRR SERVED IN UNIFORM!!!!!!!!!

VIRTUALLY EVERY VETERAN IN A POSITION TO KNOW ADVISING THE BUSH REGIME ADVISED

AAAAAGGGGGGGAAAAAAIAIIIIIINNNNNNNNSSSSSTTTTTTT

WAGING A WAR IN IRAQ. AND THEY WERE, IGNORED, BANISHED, CASTIGATED BY THOSE SAME MEDIA TYPES THAT HAVE THE LEAST TO LOSE.

AMERICANS ON THE WHOLE HAVE TO STOP LISTENING TO THESE CORPORATE WHORES AND LISTENING TO OUR GUTS.

1. SAUDIS & EGYPTIANS.

2. CAMPS IN AFGHANISTAN AKA RUSSIA'S VIETNAM.

3. AFGHANISTAN IS FIXED NOW

4. SADDAM IS THE DEVIL AND HE MUST BE DESTROYED.

5. SIX MONTHS TOPS.

WHEN IN HISTORY HAS A MAJOR MILITARY OFFENSIVE TAKEN LESS THAN DECADES? EVEN THE SIX DAYS WAR WAS AN OXYMORON.

ARE THINGS NOW OK BETWEEN ISRAEL & THE REST OF THE ARABS?
