One of the secrets behind Jon Stewart's success is the fact that even when he's mutilating the shallowest of rightwing arguments, he does so in a way that makes everybody laugh -- even the poor sod who mouthed it.

It makes the comedian's argument come across as sensible and his diss inoffensive.

It's either that phenomenon, or simply the desire for revenge, that sent Bill O'Reilly back to David Letterman's couch after Letterman told him earlier this year that "I have a feeling that 60% of what you say is crap."

In the latest go-round last Friday, O'Reilly mouthed the very same words uttered by Lynne Cheney in her Stepford meltdown on CNN: "Do you want the United States to win in Iraq?"

When Letterman begins to compose an answer too complex for O'Reilly's taste, O'Reilly presses the issue and gets squashed... Watch the video, above right...

That's it in a nutshell. Neocons like O'Reilly haven't taken the time to THINK! Slogans are more important to them than reality. Great job, Letterman!

Round 2 to David...

I saw this one "live" (inasmuch as late-night TV is "taped live"), and this time David did much better than the first time; frankly, though I can't stand BO, I thought Dave came off badly in the first go-round - contrary to opinion publicly expressed here on Alternet. Pity Dave wasn't allowed by his guest to answer; BO obviously thought he was on his own show as he did the same thing he always does: talk right over the other person and not let them get their answer in (which I've noticed all the RW "pundits" do: I was brought up that that was bad manners, and it bugs me no end when they do it and their mammas don't come in to scold them in front of everybody like they deserve!).

What to say when they pose those kinds of questions

Letterman failed. It isn't easy when they pose a question that answers itself, but maybe what he should have said was: "The war has been lost, don't you read the news?" or "Just how do you define victory? is it the end of all opposition, because that's how Hitler defined it and that would be called treason in the United states we used to know. or is it a free democracy, and that would be strange because republican policy has opposed democratically elected governemnts all around the world." Any other ideas. But there is no question, he got trumped by the lying ignoramus.

Why do networks bow to O'Lielly?

I also saw him on The View, and Rosie O'Donnell was obviously shackled by Ms. Walters. Why does the left wing have to kiss the butt of this lying piece of scum? He is a first class a-hole, a pompous Fox shill for this useless administration. Why can't he be interviewed by someone willing to show what this hateful, ignorant man really is?

The correct response to any pro-war ideologue who asks if "you want us to win in Iraq" is: "Do you want your child to die in Iraq? Do you want your child to lose an arm or leg or eye or two in Iraq?"

As Country Joe and the Fish said last time we were involved in a massive failed imperialist adventure, "be the first one on your block to have your boy come home in a box."

Don't answer their "do you want us to win" question. Ask them what they are willing to sacrifice in order to "win." Shuts 'em up every time.

Everyone needs to take a step back and realize that O'Reilly's job is not to "be thoughtful" about the various issues of the day, but rather, to act as a mouthpiece for the GOP policies regarding those issues.

It is as certain as tomorrow's sunrise that O'Reilly, Limbaugh, Hannity, Colture, etc. would have "opinions" which were 100% diametrically opposed to their current positions if the Iraq War was being overseen by a Democratic administration.
