In the following Democracy Now! clip, Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez speak with Palestinian professor Naseer Aruri and Israeli peace activist Uri Avnery about the escalating violence between Israel and Lebanon -- the worst in nearly a quarter of a century.

The blows thus far include a Lebanese incursion into Israel which left 8 Israeli soldiers dead (and two captured), the bombing of a Hezbollah TV station and Lebanese airport (killing women and children), and the firing of Lebanese rockets into Israel leaving one woman dead.

Israel views the capture of its soldiers as "an act of war."

(This is not to be confused with the capture of Israeli soldier Gilad Schalit by Palestinians and subsequent Israeli attacks on the Palestinian Foreign Ministry building and other sites in Gaza which have killed two dozen Palestinian civilians. For more about that, read the companion article HERE.)

Aruri notes that the Lebanon incursion (like the situation in Gaza) is partly the result of Israel's desire to foreclose any diplomatic two-state solution. He noted that Hamas has intimated that they're ready for a two-state solution.

Avnery meanwhile is appalled that his government refuses to consider any kind of prisoner exchange. Israel currently holds women and children in its jails.

Juan Cole, who "roundly condemn[s] Hizbullah's criminal and stupid attack on Israel, wrote, earlier today:

I continue to worry that this outbreak of war in the Levant will exacerbate tensions in Iraq and get more US troops killed. Iraqi Sunnis generally sympathize with the Palestinians. And hard line Shiites like the Sadr Movement and the Mahdi Army are close to Hizbullah. Israel's wars could tip Iraq over into an unstoppable downward spiral.
And what is Bush doing while the Middle East burns? "Not much," according to the Washington Post's Dan Froomkin, who writes: "Bush sounded more like a bystander on the world stage than the leader of its only superpower."

Aggressive warfare is a crime. People continue to do it because there is no punishment for being a war criminal because people in aggressive nations are bulging with weapons. We desperately need disarmament starting with the nation most grossly armed, the USA.

Why is Israel not subject to Nuclear inspections? Oh, how foolhardy of me I nearly forgot, the US and England helped set up that state in 1948 and we back them all the way to the Bank!

Israel is using weapons supplied by the United States to target Palestinian & Lebanese civilians and civilian infrastructure in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon in violation of the US Arms Export Control Act and the Geneva Conventions.

* On July 12th, Israel killed 23 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and killed 9 members of one family in a missile strike on a house near Gaza City.
And launched a massive invasion of Lebanon, targeting civilian infrastructure, including bridges, roads, a mosque, a community center, and the Beirut International Airport, and the Israeli navy is blockading Lebanon’s ports. Israel has killed at least 50 Lebanese civilians and injured more than 100, including entire Lebanese families of 10 and 7 people killed in the villages of Dweir and Baflay.

* On June 27th, Israeli aircraft fired missiles targeting civilian infrastructure. In illegal acts of collective punishment, Israel demolished three key bridges, the Gaza Strip’s only electricity generation plant, and part of a university, thereby endangering Palestinian human rights to food, water, health, electricity, education, and freedom of movement. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert admitted that the purpose of these measures is to “apply pressure” to the civilian population of the Gaza Strip.

Israel’s human rights violations in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon are being committed with US weapons financed by US tax dollars:

The Israeli air force fighter squadrons are composed of Lockheed Martin F-16I Fighting Falcons and Boeing F-15Is, which fire US-manufactured AMRAAM, Sidewinder, and Sparrow missiles. From 2000-2005, the United States licensed to Israel at least $1.062 billion of spare parts, engines, and missiles for its F-15 and F-16 fighter planes.

From 2000-2005, the United States licensed to the Israeli navy more than $572 million worth of patrol boat, ship, and submarine components and spare parts, torpedoes, and sonar equipment.

From 2000-2005, the United States licensed to Israel more than $348 million worth of tanks, components, and spare parts.

From 2000-2005, the United States licensed to Israel $69,163 worth of M-109 spare parts and 155mm artillery shells.

Israel’s summer of killing civilians and destroying civilian infrastructure in the Gaza Strip is a clear reminder that Israel remains the occupying power of the Gaza Strip despite last year’s “unilateral disengagement”. Living under military occupation, the Palestinians of the Gaza Strip are “protected persons” under the terms of the Geneva Conventions. Israel’s targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon is a violation of the Geneva Conventions and constitutes war crimes.

In addition, by using US-supplied weapons to commit these atrocities, Israel is violating the terms of the US Arms Export Control Act and Foreign Assistance Act. The Arms Export Control Act restricts the use of US weapons to legitimate self-defense and internal policing; US weapons cannot be used to attack civilians in offensive operations. The Foreign Assistance Act prohibits US aid of any kind to a country with a pattern of gross human rights violations.

Contact the White House, State Department, and your Members of Congress- demand that Israel is held accountable for its violations.

One of the GREATEST arguments for Bush complicity in 9-11

One of the GREATEST arguments for Bush complicity in 9-11 has been the Administration's relentless "screw me" attitude toward the state of Israel. What in the world could Israel be holding over the Administration's head that would be so damning and so fatal that the Administration merely goes along with anything that Israel says?

What indeed?

And what is the reason that most anti-Zionist folks hold up as Israeli government, possibly Mossad, involvement in 9-11? There is the case of the "Dancing Israelis", the young exhuberant Israeli ops that were videoing the WTC as it fell, jumping around and slapping each other on the back as if it were a wedding. Who were promptly let go by the authorites and quickly sent back to Israel. Many folks point to this as evidence of explicit Israeli involvement in 9-11.

Only one problem. If Israel was involved from the very beginning, they COULDN'T USE BUSH INVOLVEMENT AS BLACKMAIL, because they themselves would be just as implicated, just as guilty, IF THEY WERE SIMILARLY INVOLVED. No, in order to use 9-11 complicity as blackmail, THEY HAD TO BE COMPLETELY INNOCENT.

Not to mention that the Mossad and the Israeli government, on several WELL-DOCUMENTED occassions, did their absolute best to warn the Bush Administration AND the CIA that an attack was imminent, AND THEY WERE COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY IGNORED. As were all other warnings from all other countries who'd picked up similar chatter and intelligence.

It has been my assertion from the very beginning, that what the Dancing Israeli young Mossad agents were recording WAS THE END OF A VERY LONG and DAMNING TAPE SEQUENCE, one that could be used for endless blackmail against the Bush Administration. One that had ACTUAL FOOTAGE OF MARVIN BUSH'S "SECURITY" CREW PLANTING THERMITE CHARGES THROUGHOUT THE WTC. One that, like any good sting operation, had enough evidence of planning meetings and actual operations to HANG THE ENTIRE ADMINISTRATION FOR TREASON.

One has to remember that the relationship between the real government of the United States (the triumvirate of George H.W. "Poppy" Bush41, Dick Cheney, and Donald Rumsfeld) and the State of Israel and the Mossad has always been a shaky and tenous one. The Mossad knows, more than anyone else, that all Bush "allies" sooner or later end up with the proverbial knife in the back. And when they got wind of what BushCo were planning, THEY WERE FORCED, as a matter of SELF-PRESERVATION and SELF-PROTECTION, to take video OF THE ENTIRE OPERATION from START TO FINISH to COVER THEIR OWN ASSES. They had NO WAY OF KNOWING whether the Bush Administration was planning to pin this on them or on Iraq. Indeed, Sharon himself was deathly afraid of Bush assassination attempts, and had orders, upon any untimely and suspicious death, to release the tapes, copies of which he'd distributed throughout the world in locations unknown even to the Mossad. Which is why he will be kept alive indefinitely as a human vegetable, because the current Israeli government wants to keep that evidence to hold as a sword over the Administration's head INDEFINITELY.

So now YOU know. You know why the Israeli government can start a war with anyone it wants, right up to Iran itself, and the US, overstretched as it is, will be forced to finish it, this time, nuclearly because the US doesn't have the troops to finish the job any other way but total complete nuclear annihilation of as much of Iran as possible.

To which China and Russia will take great offense and retaliate against the US with everything in their nuclear AND non-conventional arsenal (which is QUITE extensive.)

Israel is going to end up blackmailing the Bush Administration into suiciding the entire United States against China and Russia, and then they're going to end up STRANDED.

UNLESS they RELEASE THOSE TAPES.

I'm not disagreeing with your 9 11 theory, I wouldn't put ANYthing past Bush OR Israel but one reason Bush backs Israel is because of the Jewish vote, in his first debate he made clear his support for Israel even if it did wreck years of work by several presidents, including his father and if he can keep the Israelis killing the Palestinians that keeps the terrorists terrorizing in the middle east and HE thinks justifies staying in Iraq
