The International Council on Security published maps of the insurgency's presence in 2007, 2008 and 2009. The United States added troops in Afghanistan in each of these years. ICOS's maps show that none of these troop increases arrested the growth of the insurgency. In fact, analysts at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and UK's DFID suggest that the presence of foreign troops drives Afghans to join the insurgency.

none of those troop increases have arrested the growth of the insurgency because american bible carrying soldiers, are trying to idiotically (with the army/pentagon's approval) convert muslims into christians. this is the ideal way to outrage muslims and create more terrorists.

A WORD ABOUT THE GENERAL

There's picture of him on another site. He looks very worried and unsure of himself. Apparently "it's worse than he thought it would be". At this point in his new assignment is he allowed to sound remorseful? Not so sure of himself, in so short a time. What's the deal. I know he doesn't have a crystal ball, but this is four star general talking. How many lives are at stake? Is he trying to frighten Obama and the rest of us into believing that there really is need for 500,000 troops? He was so damned sure of himself a few weeks ago. Has the military become so removed from the reality of war because they've been running things by remote control for so long? A counterinsugency is a major undertaking. Very often it's a failure. There's a need to know the language and the ways of the people. The whole idea is to befriend the 'host country'. It's a way of fighting a war that results in a much higher rate of casualties than standard warfare. I assume that the general knows these things. I have serious doubts about him. Not to mention the whole idea. We simply don't belong there. I'm sorrry that life is tough for the Afgan people but I don't believe that their problems can be solved by one more American soldier getting killed and they have no interest in diplomacy. That's all there is. ANNA
