The Perils of Predator Drones in Pakistan

The situation in Pakistan is deteriorating by the hour. This nuclear-armed nation already plagued by political and economic turmoil now faces a massive humanitarian crisis, as 500,000 people flee the Swat valley in the face of armed conflict between Pakistani authorities and Taliban extremists who have taken control. As President Obama meets with Pakistani President Asif Zardari and Afghan President Hamid Karzai today, the question becomes what the U.S. can do to prevent all-out war in Pakistan.

An article in The New York Times yesterday presented three potential strategies for the Obama administration to pursue in the coming weeks: 1) hasten the long-term strategy of retraining the Pakistani army to fight the counterinsurgency while upping nation-building efforts; 2) rely on more Predator drone strikes and covert ground attacks; and 3) make sure Pakistan's nuclear arsenal is secure from the extremist threat. While the Obama administration may have its back against the wall, authorizing more Predator drone attacks is a disastrous option that must be avoided at all cost.

As David Kilcullen, the counterinsurgency expert who designed Gen. Petraeus's Iraqi surge, recently told the House Armed Services Committee, "We need to call off the drones." This covert plan, first approved by Bush (and continued by Obama) to skirt Pakistan's refusal to allow U.S. troops into the country, uses unmanned aerial drones remotely controlled by the CIA to hunt down suspected terrorists and insurgents. But as Kilcullen claimed, it's backfiring, prompting more Taliban extremists to take up arms against the U.S.-backed Pakistani government and driving them deeper into the country.

Kilcullen explained:

"Since 2006, we've killed 14 senior Al Qaeda leaders using drone strikes; in the same time period, we've killed 700 Pakistani civilians in the same area. The drone strikes are highly unpopular. They are deeply aggravating to the population. And they've given rise to a feeling of anger that coalesces the population around the extremists and leads to spikes of extremism. ... The current path that we are on is leading us to loss of Pakistani government control over its own population."

In addition to the 700 innocent Pakistani civilians killed, the UN estimates drone strikes have displaced hundreds of thousands more people. One can only imagine the inordinate amount of chaos and devastation caused by more drone strikes, as they become a recruiting tool for Islamic militants spurred into action against the Pakistani government and U.S. interests.

Micah Zenko of the Council on Foreign Relations wrote recently, "Using [drones] in response to a worsening situation has not only failed to achieve President Bush's or President Obama's goals, it has fueled anti-American animosity on the ground in Pakistan." What's more, drone attacks aren't even being used to target the al Qaeda terrorists who supported the 9/11 attacks. As Zenko noted, the majority of recent attacks have targeted the jihadist leader Baitullah Mehsud's network, which seeks to topple the Zardari government and allegedly had a hand in the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. In other words, our government seems to be losing sight of the initial goal of these strikes in an effort to prop up the deeply corrupt, unpopular Zardari government.

Zenko's conclusion is an important one to keep in mind. "By being forced to battle Al Qaeda and the Taliban with flying robots from above," he assessed, "US leaders are put in a position where they remain largely unaware or uninterested in the serious negative consequences that the strikes have on the ground in Pakistan. At the very least, US officials should be more forthcoming in defending the use of drones and therefore open their use up to public debate." That is the key here. We have to press for transparency and accountability before the administration decides to expand drones attacks and costly covert operations that kill more innocent civilians, create more support for extremists, and push Pakistan into a war that could be prevented through non-military means.

Digg!

A Better Idea - The US To Go Home and Take It's Drones With It

In less tha 50 Years time, The US may well appear a truly 3rd World Country being supported and influenced by a far more technologically advanced China.

How would Americans like it if Chinese Drones were flying 60 miles from Washington attacking American Freedom Fighters wanting to restore liberty and justice?

Americans are so arrogant that seem to think they can control the entire World whilst a significant proportion of Americans only learn to tie their own shoelaces as a result of joining the Military.

Who Says Neoconservatism Is Dead?

Sadly, Obama's neoconservative belief in military solutions to insurgencies is historically discredited, completely illogical and maintained in the teeth of current failure in both Iraq and Afghanistan. He's rushing in where Europeans fear to tread for good reasons.

The cost of his folly will be measured in tens or hundreds of thousands of lives, hundreds of billions of dollars, and a legacy nearly as vile as Bush's.

ZP Heller, you wanna stop the insanity? Duh! Expose the lies of 9/11 that make it all possible.

ZP, you have shown that you realize what I realize..........our wars in the Middle East are unnecessary horrors that should be stopped.
But how do you stop them when the American people are led to believe, by you and all other journalists, that if we do not take control of these countries, they will again attack us like they did on 9/11.

Journalists are now to blame for these wars continuing. If Alternet and other alternative sites would begin exposing the vast amount of evidence proving 9/11 was an inside job, the reasons for these wars would disappear and the American people would demand a withdrawal and a rational relook at our militarism that is out of control, a militarism based on the phoney war on terror.

But for some reason, ZP, you and all other journalists will not present the glaring contradictions and impossibilities of the offical 9/11 story. I don't know why, but I'd imagine there is tremendous pressure and threats. Why else would good, curious and intelligent journalists refrain from bringing to the public the biggest story ever?

But if you would bring us the real story, or at least the proof of the coverup and lies, you would change the world. Our future would not be so grim, full of global ethnic hatred and bombings and torture that the war on terror has promoted. All that would end. And you, ZP, could start the revolution.

Do you really not know of David Ray Griffin or Steven Jones or Kevin Ryan or Richard Gage or the rest? They are really true heroes, worth bringing to our media just for their patriotism. But what they have done is the important thing. They have compiled and analyzed and researched all of the contradictions and improbabilities and impossibilities of the official 9/11 story. They have proven, beyond any doubt, that 9/11 was an inside job. Their latest work, by Steven Jones and Kevin Ryan and others, is a peer reviewed scientific paper that proves that active thermite was found in all samples of dust at the WTC collapse, and it is a special kind of thermite, nanothermite, that is very unique and non commercial and could only be produced in quantity by the US government.
But even THIS important and groundbreaking information is ignored by you and your fellow "professionals".

Are you, ZP, purposely keeping this information from the American public? If you are, what kind of complicity do you have in the illegal wars and occupations, the bombing of innocent civilians, the torture, the wiretapping, the Patriot Act? Where will YOU be if this all becomes public knowledge, that you KNEW 9/11 was a phoney and all of these horrors unnecessary? Who should we blame for the continuance of the war on terror nightmares all around the world.

I blame you.

But you, right now, have a special opportunity that I wish I had. You could begin to study the truth of 9/11, and bring whatever you feel is important and well thought out, and make it public by writing about it. Start the avalanche we need, an avalanche of awakening to the reality of that fateful day. Begin at www.911truth.org and www.ae911truth.org.

Do it and save us from this tyrrany!
