During his final press conference this morning, Bush defended his response to Katrina. He said he has “thought long and hard about Katrina” and admitted that “things [could] have been done better” but denied any problem with the federal response to the disaster, insisting, “Don’t tell me the federal response was slow!”:

BUSH: You know, people said that the federal response was slow. Don’t tell me the federal response was slow when there was 30,000 people pulled off roofs right after the storm passed. … 30,000 people were pulled off roofs right after the storm moved through. That’s a pretty quick response. Could things have been done better? Absolutely, absolutely. But when I hear people say the federal response was slow, then what are they gonna say to those chopper drivers? Or to the 30,000 that got pulled off the roofs?

The federal response to Katrina was nothing short of a disaster. A 2006 report compiled by House Republicans slammed what it called “a failure of leadership,” saying that the federal government’s “blinding lack of situational awareness and disjointed decision making needlessly compounded and prolonged Katrina’s horror.” The report specifically blamed Bush, noting that “earlier presidential involvement could have speeded the response” because the president alone could have cut through bureaucratic resistance.

There is no question that the federal response was slow — deadly slow. Katrina made landfall on Monday, Aug. 29, 2005, and the New Orleans levees were breached that morning. Despite the numerous warnings he had received about the storm’s severity, Bush spent that Monday traveling to Arizona and California to promote his Medicare drug bill. It was characteristic of the entire federal response:

– National Guard troops did not arrive in the area until two full days after the levees were breached.

– Bush did not leave his vacation home or assemble a task force until Wednesday, two days after the hurricane made landfall and the levees were breached.

– By Thursday, three days after landfall, FEMA had yet to set up a command and control center.

– FEMA Director Michael Brown said he had not heard about the more than 3,000 evacuees stranded in the convention center until Thursday. Many evacuees had been there since Tuesday morning.

– On Friday morning, Bush praised Brown: “Brownie, you’re doing a heckuva job.” He also said he was “satisfied with the response.”

– FEMA did not finalize its request for evacuation buses until Sunday, six days after Katrina hit. The buses “trickled into New Orleans, with only a dozen or so arriving the first day,” noted the Wall Street Journal.

– The Superdome was finally evacuated on Sunday, a full seven days after 30,000 evacuees had arrived there.

“Despite a FEMA official’s eyewitness accounts of breaches starting at 7 p.m. on Aug. 29,” the Bush administration “did not consider them confirmed” until 11 hours later. In fact, FEMA did not order the evacuation of New Orleans until 1:30 a.m. on Aug. 31, two full days after Katrina made landfall.

In one area, however, the Bush administration did move quickly: pinning the blame for Katrina on its political opponents.

Update: Following today's press conference, Karl Rove appeared on Fox News to join in absolving the Bush administration of any blame regarding the Katrina response. "The federal government is in charge of writing checks. It's not in charge of the action itself," Rove said.

Digg!

The question was about slow response. The fact that the feds did essentially nothing for days; that the response was a complete cluster****; that passing bills is not the same as getting the money where it's needed, not addressed.

Not that that is surprising from the most corrupt, incompetent ass**** that ever held the job.

In the end...

Katrina is a testament to why a society needs a functioning government, rather than a crony capitalist state where mission critical posts like FEMA are given to friends and political supporters.

Katrina was an extraordinary disaster...unlike Hurricane Andrew and the 1989 Bay Area earthquake, in both of these cases, the disasters were over in hours (or seconds in the earthquake)...and recovery teams were blessed with perfect weather and largely intact road and communications infrastructures after the initial natural events.

Katrina was a rolling disaster that kept getting worse. No state or local government has the resources to deal with such a disaster...neither does the "free market." Only a coordinated effort of a functioning government with military aircraft could have performed an effective response...Yet, this flies right in the face of conservative thought: the government can NEVER be seen as being effecting under any circumstances....In the end, 1,600 people died because of ideology.

I realize that he is trying to re-write "his-story", but there are many of us that remember "heck-uva job Brownie"! How many days were people on their roofs, or at the Morial Stadium without fresh water, or food! New Orleans still hasn't been rebuilt, and many people didn't qualify for those so-called loans, why - because if they had paperwork it got flooded! Many of the people that lived in the ninth ward had heir property - property that had been left to them from a parent so they might not have had paperwork!

Let's face it, the nation installed a "Manchurian Candidate", either that or a mildly retarded (no dis-respect intended), incompetent crony abiding frat boy that still doesn't have a clue, as to the amount of MISMANAGEMENT, FRAUD, THEFT, AND OUTRIGHT AVARICE that occurred on his watch!

... would have been to not have 30,000 people to have to pull off of their rooves in the first place... especially when this lying sack of mule shit was warned the levies might fail... and then claimed on national TV that "no one dreamed the levies would fail", which I guess is true if you take it literally and actually asked everyone involved if they had dreamed about the levies failing.

Willfully stupid is much more appropriate.

I am sure many "mildly retarded" individuals have a great deal more common sense than W, and - much more importantly - an awareness of their limitations.

Bush is a self-taught, silver-spoon, dumbass. He earned that distinction.

He has somebody on staff to read books and give him a synopsis; then (according to him), he's "read" them. Were there any way to prove it, I would be willing to bet my net worth that he "earned" that "gentleman's C" the same way. He paid somebody to do the work and took the credit.

Any (theoretical) takers?

PS: I know you meant no insult to the mentally challenged. : )

Lessons need to be learned from Katrina. Why was not the fresh ice ever delivered? So many died that could have been saved. Are people really so ignorant as not to evacuate when a warning is given? Never mind that Fema is not perfect and also was ready.

The point is that Bush didn't care. The usual people knocked themselves out and did an outstanding job. He was aware of serious warnings 4 days before the hurricane hit. Max Mayfield and the professor from LSU, normally laid back guys were clearly scared. But not George. For 8 years we were never more than a pain in his ass. And he was a pain in ours. On Jan 20 we get to take out the garbage at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. I can't wait. ANNA

Bush to blame for Katrina

Here's something I wrote back when Katrina hit. The truth about the entire thing is that the federal government of the richest nation on Earth didn't do anything for a week. A WEEK. Five days where nothing happened. Except fear mongering of 'looting' from the media and Washington blaming State officials and the mayor for not evacuating the entire population with a few buses (if the lie is big, you know). Just pathetic. Even today there's no truth about what actually happened, even though all those media 'people' were there. Will we ever forget the moment Chertoff was on CNN and didn't know about the thousands in the Stadium? The news-guy was so stunned he had to interrupt Chertoffs 'spin' speak to point out, yes, there are people who have been starving for the last week just a block from you!

... Just, wow. America, you've fallen apart. And on TV.

Anyho', here's my blast from the past...

Bush to blame
--------------
The Bush White House and pals are lieing through their teeth about New Orleans. Bush said no one could have foreseen the flooding. Not true. Homeland Security Chief Chertoff said the same thing. Not true. FEMA Director Mike Brown is brain damaged. Oh, that's true.

It works like this kids...

Bush created the Dept. of Homeland Security. It's mandate is to make sure nothing like 9/11 ever happens again. The top three disasters, experts advised, are a WMD terror attack, an earthquake in California, and the levees breaking in New Orleans. TOP THREE!

The Dept. of Homeland Security is in charge of disasters. FEMA was hobbled when the Bush White House folded FEMA into Homeland Security. Even the staff was cut drastically and hey, Mike Brown is an old pal of George W. and, even though he was fired from his last job for incompetence, Bush still flew in to congratulate "Brownie" on a job well done... as bodies floated past... literally. On Friday. The storm hit NO Sunday.

Now the Bush people are blaming the "local and State" officials for not acting. But look, they might be guilty of some things but there's only so much locals and state can do. Besides, the State has far less money and National Guard equipment and troops, who are in Iraq.

Remember - most of the people in New Orleans didn't die because of mistakes or the hurricane or even the flooding, THEY DIED BECAUSE THEIR GOVERNMENT LEFT THEM TO ROT FOR A WEEK. A FUCKING WEEK!

Jefferson Parish (New Orleans) President Aaron Broussard breaks into tears on US TV begging for help...
The guy who runs this building I’m in, Emergency Management, he’s responsible for everything. His mother was trapped in St. Bernard nursing home and every day she called him and said, “Are you coming, son? Is somebody coming?” and he said, “Yeah, Mama, somebody’s coming to get you.”

Somebody’s coming to get you on Tuesday.

Somebody’s coming to get you on Wednesday.

Somebody’s coming to get you on Thursday.

Somebody’s coming to get you on Friday.

...and she drowned Friday night. She drowned Friday night! [Sobbing]

Nobody’s coming to get us. Nobody’s coming to get us. The Secretary has promised. Everybody’s promised.

They’ve had press conferences. I’m sick of the press conferences. For god’s sakes, just shut up and send us somebody.

Most of the people on those roofs were poor blacks. Had they been rich white Wall Street Bankers the Government would have been there in a heartbeat.

Last Victims Buried - Three years later.

Just last August the still unburied remains of 80 victims of Bush's "quick response" were finally laid to rest. Local coroners took it upon themselves to do the job. Apparently, no one else felt like it was their responsibility. No one from FEMA or the Bush Administration attended the dedication of a memorial.

One thing I noticed about the Katrina disaster - the federal government was quick to get their private army on the streets to protect the fat cats. Maybe that is the "quick response" Bush was talking about?

Two things... about this statement
Posted by: Quannah on Jan 13, 2009 12:33 PM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
"...But when I hear people say the federal response was slow, then what are they gonna say to those chopper drivers? Or to the 30,000 that got pulled off the roofs?"

First... Chopper drivers??? As I listened to that, a voice in my head said, "Excuse me, but you are supposed to be a pilot, and you call them 'chopper drivers'?" Keith Olbermann said the same thing last night. Absurd!

Second... I heard that there weren't actually 30,000 pulled off roofs. There were only 12,000+. And, as Keith pointed out last night on Countdown, those people were rescued by the Coast Guard, and it was done because of their own authority, not because they waited for Bush to "order it" done.

I think I would fall over dead if Bush EVER took responsibility for his fuck-ups. I wouldn't be able to withstand the shock.
