Jon Stewart Takes on Israel's Attack on Gaza

He’s braver than me, that’s for sure.

The best part, in my opinion (sorry, don’t have time for a full transcript, but hopefully one will surface somewhere):

Mayor Michael Bloomberg: If you're in your apartment and some emotionally disturbed person is banging on your door, screaming, “I'm going to come through this door and kill you!” do you want us to respond with one police officer, which is proportional, or with all the resources at our command?

Stewart: I guess it depends if I forced that guy to live in my hallway … and make him go through checkpoints every time he has to take a shit! But then again, by removing him by force … I guess if you believe that there are no more crazy people in New York … OK!

God, my dumb-ass mayor. What kind of stupid example is that? Yeah, I want a SWAT team to come in and blow away that mentally ill, trapped, underfed person with everything they’ve got. That would be a great scenario for everyone involved -- for me, my apartment, the poor unhinged screamer. "Everything at our disposal," the kitchen sink, as opposed to, say, a social worker who knows the person and a police officer, just in case? Believe me, I've been in that kind of situation. I did not want "all the resources at our command," and I didn’t get them either. Idiotic.

I haven't written much about the Gaza situation because I feel thoroughly overwhelmed and sick about it, and frankly, because I’m freaked out that I don’t know enough to say something intelligent, other than expressing distress and horror. But I will say that I’m pretty sick of the whole "well of course if Mexico/Cuba/Canada were attacking us, we'd do the same thing, can't you understand that?" argument. Gee, of course that makes it all right — that the United States would do the same thing? That it would be wrong to disagree with U.S. military policies if the U.S. military and government were carrying out the same kind of policies, just like many Israeli activists do? Come on.

Cue Jon Stewart being tarred as a "self-hating Jew" in 3 … 2 … 1 …

Because you know, being Jewish = being a Zionist = defending Israel’s policies at all costs without any nuance, right? I’m often disappointed by the occasional Stewart joke because he engages in "splash damage" mockery of a lot of "hilarious" disenfranchised groups for extra yuks along the way: trans people, fat folks, midgets, the mentally ill (as in this case, although my mayor brought it up). But I'm glad he's using his comedytorial pulpit to speak out this time, and that he seems genuinely upset by what's happening. I’m glad for all the Jews out there who are willing to take a stand and say that what's happening is wrong, honestly. I think it's brave.

I saw a lot of bravery and anger and unwillingness to roll over and go away when I was at the Palestinian-led protest marches here in New York on Saturday as a legal observer, and I saw Jews marching alongside there, too. I don't think that point can be repeated enough, especially for all the rabidly pro-Israel and blindly anti-Semitic types out there who like to weigh in on this horror.

Thank you Jon Stewart for showing the ridiculous justifications made by American politicians... for exposing the check points and the imprisonments... for showing the complete bias towards Israel in the media... for speaking out as a Jew.

why do the politicians (conveniently) forget that this isn't a matter of one nation attacking another nation - it is an oppressed area fighting back because they have lost their land and are denied a decent standard of living.

perhaps the better metaphor, one that would really make people think about it - what if the indigenous peoples of north america started (or started again) to retaliate for the governments of the continent taking away their lands?

For one reason or another the state of Israel has always and in every case got the support of the United States in all of their fairly frequent wars and disputes. Many of us thought there might be some hope for the region when Israel ceded Gaza and moved out, but we see that we were wrong. Seeing the bleeding wounded and the corpses of mothers with babies crying beside them has changed us somewhat; seeing the dead children taken out of the bombed school convinces me that for Israel's government, like most of the "leaders" in that part of the world, killing is what they do best. I am sick to death of Arabs, Israelis, Hezbollah, Hamas, ad infinitum. They will fight each other until there are two of them left in the universe, then the two will fight to the death over their worthless land and kill each other.

The war in Gaza disgusts me. Our government's position disgusts me. The Israelies have become Nazis, just as children of alcoholic parents drink. These people in Gaza are living in a ghetto. It's looking like the 21st century is going to be even worse than the 20th. We have to find a way to reign in our government. It is shocking to know that our main product is WEAPONS. As this is the case, it's not surprising that we promote wars. To these disgusting people, it's just BUSINESS. America has to get out of the weapons business. If our nuclear arsenal isn't enough, what is the point in having it?

I'm tired of these tired politicians, rehashing the tired trite lies that Israel uses to justify their holocaust of the Palestinian people! I'm tired of the Israeli's lying when no matter how much the Palestinian people cede, it is not enough for Israel! The Israeli's should just admit that they really want the Palestinians to pick up and go - no 2 state solution, nothing; just get out and then the Israeli's will have all of the land!

But I wonder what excuse that Israel will use when they want to annex Lebannon, or Syria, or even Egypt, or Saudi Arabia? And what will the U.S. puppets use as the excuse then? Boycott Israel now, save the world in the long run!!!!

After the unjustified shooting of a UN truck driver delivering food supplies to Gaza in A CLEARLY MARKED TRUCK, I have come to the conclusion that Israel has become Nazi Germany. If the word I hear on this site about prospective settlers of Gaza are true, the parallels become closer. As William Shirer recounted in "Rise and Fall of the Third Reich", the point of Operation Barbarossa (the German offensive into the USSR) was to slaughter as many Slavs as possible to make "German living space" for Hitler's much-fabled master race of Aryans. The only difference between that scenario and this is just scale. Same oppression, same blood, same people fighting back against hopeless odds. Israel has just made the biggest fuck-up of its entire existence as a modern nation.

An overwhelmingly powerful nation at first blockades a much weaker nation because it doesn't like its leadership, then, when that nation lashes out in anger with actions that are not much more than nuisances, the bullying nation invades and begins slaughtering people way out of proportion to the threat, all the while protesting that they are just trying to remove terrorist factions and not bring about regime change, when regime change is exactly their goal. Oh, and this invasion also has the political motive of the bullying nation's "leadership" shoring up its weak position in anticipation of the next election.

Yep! Sure sounds like Iraq to me!

Israel is ripping pages out of the Bush/Neocon playbook, and BushCo is applauding them for it.

Having mentally decided that America politicians and media are irredeemable, along come Jon Stewart to give me a sliver of hope. Strange that you should have to go to a comedy programme to find someone with a real grasp of morality and Middle East realities. I am sure he will get pilloried within the US, but he has certainly acted as a great ambassador for a better America.

Wouldn't it be ironic if a member of the Bush family profited off of selling technology to the Jews that would be used to create ways of killing Palestinians in large numbers? (You know, a sort of "cleansing" of an unwanted population sitting in your back yard?)

Talk about history repeating itself.

Maybe in another generation, a Bush can sell Palestinians nuclear technology to bomb Germany, and thus the entire thing will have gone full circle.

Kudos John for having the balls to act like a human being, even if it means calling out your own people for being brutal warmongers.

Suffering from oppression does not give one the moral authority to oppress, steal, torture, and destroy ad infinitum. We have lent them that authority by allowing it, and supporting it, and therefore are just as guilty, if not more so for creating the whole mess from day one.
