Cheney Calls Iraq 'Significant Success, Masterfully Done'

Posted by Blue Texan, Firedoglake at 2:11 PM on January 4, 2009.

In a classic example of a Dick who likes to place blame on others, Cheney blames the lengthy, bloody occupation on lack of Iraqi "get up and go."

Not only does Dick want everyone to know how proud he is of BushCo's signature policy, he's pissed that the Iraqis took some of the luster off of Rummy's military masterpiece.

SCHIEFFER: Wouldn't it have been better, on reflection, to have a better and larger force [going into Iraq]?

DICK: Well, um, we could debate that forever and we may well. I think that the original campaign was masterfully done in terms of the small, fast moving force as you say, that achieved our inital objectives in taking down the regime and capturing Baghdad, that was a masterful performance.

I think the thing that we underestimated, at least I underestimated, was the damage that had been done to the Iraqi population by all those years of Saddam's rule, so that there weren't any Iraqis early on who were willing to stand up and take responsibilty for their own affairs. Anybody who had that kind of get up and go in earlier years had had their head chopped off.

Yeah, what a drag.

I mean, we gave these underachieving brown people their freedom through a massive bombing campaign followed by a full-scale ground war, after a decade of sanctions and more bombing.  And all they had to do was demonstrate a modicum of personal responsibility and everything would've been peachy. But noooooo instead, they had to die by the hundreds of thousands and flee their war-ravaged hell hole of a country by the millions. Spineless losers.

So we needed more boots on the ground to pick up their slack, right Dick?

DICK: I'm not at all sure that having had 4-500,000 troops there would've achieved the objective we're talking about. What we finally did, what finally sort of got us across the goal line here was the Surge the President decided upon, coupled with the counterinsurgency strategy.

In other words, the problem wasn't that we didn't have enough troops, but the key to our victory was adding more troops.

Go fuck yourself, Dick.

Digg!

Cheney also made this statement in an interview with the International Herald Tribune:

http://www.iht.com/articles/2009/01/04/americas/legacy.php (for full interview)

WASHINGTON: Vice President Dick Cheney said Sunday that the United States was "close to achieving most of our objectives" in Iraq, as he continued in his final days in office to offer a spirited defense of the Bush administration's record.

Which objective is this? The original need to get rid of the massive stockpiles of WMD, the reason for going to war to begin with.

Could be the adjustment they were forced to make when no WMD were found.

But I must admit I believe it too be the new one that is in Cheney's dreams and covered by executive privilege.

Yes, it was/is the "lack of get up and go" but not by the iraqis but by the us military not getting up and going. As usual no mention was made of the fact that if the US had not got up and went there in the first place there would never have been the need to "go".

to re-write history in the minds of Americans, part of this whole "Bush Legacy thing."

Reagan managed to have it done. Remember his funeral during the height of W's war about WMDs in Iraq? Few mentioned that Reagan's administration had been the one that gave the WMDs to Saddam.

You know how W. gets some credit for his AIDS in Africa effort? Few remember it was Reagan/Bush who criminally refused to try to nip that scourge in the bud because their advisors felt it was God's punishment to gays. Much of the widespread AIDS early contagion, which made today's situation far worse, was because Papa Bush chose to sit on his hands, because he was listening to the Xtians.

It will be up to those of us who are now conscious of what's gone on, to battle this attempt to rewrite history for the rest of our lives.

It's also part of their attempt to re-define the future of every problem W has created as due to Obama's leadership.

See him flap his jaws!
See him openly disregard reality!
Watch as he denies and outright ignores the facts!
Look as television "journalists" let him get away with it. They are powerless in the presence of his amazing arrogance!
Yes folks, Dick actually believes he can single-handedly change history.
Watch as he skillfully weaves his web of lies! Just try and look away.
You can't-it's like watching a slow motion train wreck.
Horrible but so compelling.

Talk about re-writing history and changing the facts.

Of course, we don't even know who this propaganda spinner is . . . "Blue Texan"?

Cheney is right. The Iraqis were slow to "stand up" because they were accustomed to getting their heads cut off when they did and Cheney is pointing out that we underestimated the degree to which this would affect their resolve to have their own cake and eat it too. "Blue Texan" here is trying to imply that Cheney's take is that they were slow to "stand up" because they were "brown people". How despicable and yet typical of such a cowardly author.

Mr Texan also doesn't have a clue about "The Surge". It wasn't about more troops. It was about repositioning them and taking a different tact. It did involve some additional deployments, but what Cheney is saying is that simply adding to the number of troops in the beginning of the post Saddam part of the war wouldn't have helped. In fact, it might have hurt what we were trying to do. I don't expect someone like Blue Texan to understand that because he isn't trying to. He simply wants to take what ever pot shots at the Bush administration that he can, facts be damned.

And of course he has to end it with a macho explicative phrase . . . as if that somehow gives his point credibility. What a loser this Blue Texan is.

It is my greatest hope that Cheney will face War Crimes charges and sent to jail at Gitmo. Why the media even gives this scum bag a platform on which to again and again lie just proves the media role in allowing him coverage. Send this Bum to Jail, and no Federal Pension or health benefits while he is serving his time!

As usual these people have resorted to lies, tricks, and the continual spin of "we're on course", to promote their "Legacy" agenda. For those people that are conscious, can think logically, and live in the real world we must never forget or let future generations buy into the reasons that we bought the bill of goods aka "WMD's, oh wait, WMD programs, oh wait, Saddam was a tyrant, oh wait, Iraqi freedom, no Virginia - it WAS THE OIL, STUPID!!!

While this has been the most corrupt, crony-ist, incompetent government, with the worst most un-curious President (in at least) in the last 50 years, we the (conscious) people must endeavor to remember and pass on to everyone why this bs should never ever be allowed to happen again!!!

That's what we're observing here, folks! They warned us about this in school back as late as the '70s, that it would be the price we'd pay if we allowed the "scourge of communism" to enter our borders.

Now we realize the "scourge" was not communism, but some strange American version of fascism taking hold. And Cheney's one of the top figures in this scourge.

Shouldn't you have known that BEFORE you invaded Iraq??!! I believe you DID know that! In fact, in 1994 (I believe that year is right but you can fact check it) you warned in an interview that an invasion of Iraq would be a terribly messy thing that we should most definitely not try. Then you went nationwide under W and tried to convince us it would be a piece of cake. So why the change of heart? How stupid do you think we, the American people, are? You are a lying sack of lying donkey lies!

Idiotic decision to disband Iraqi army created disaster after success

The overthrow of Saddam was accomplished quickly with a surgical strike; the catastrophe was created by the idiotic decision to disband the Iraqi army and security services (contrary to assurances given to Crown Prince Abdulla of Saudi Arabia). This astoundingly imbecilic decision was taken by Jerry Bremer, with Bush signing on later.

"....I think the thing that "we" underestimated, at least I underestimated, was the damage that had been done to the Iraqi population by all those years of Saddam's rule...."

The fucken gall. What a deceptive ass hole.

Cheney's plan was to have Saddam killed, to kill the only "witnesses" that could point the finger of the source of WMD's on the CIA and Rummy, The US for having been the suppliers of all of the technology to make it.
( Yah, remember the un accounted for 40,000 AK-47's the the US "lost" that all went unaccounted for? Oh, too, since when does the US deal in AK-47's? It seems NO body askes even the simplest questions.)

Then too of course the bastard doesn't acknowledge the damage that had been done to the Iraqi population by all those years of BUSh's and HIS rule.

At least during Saddam's reign there was a civilization of sorts and he did keep the alleged Iranians at bay.
But now there is nothing left of one of the cradles of civilizaton and infrastructure, fresh water, electricity education, medical services all of which have been "blown to smithereens, "bombed back to the stone age".

What the congress and people need an deserve is a pointed list of all the wasted and lost and destroyed aspects gone, because of the lack of accountability. This these bastards would have to address.
But congress and the courts would say, "The legal fees would be astronomical". And Rep.Diane Feinstein would say, "oh, but we have to bring the people together and that would just further divide the parties and people."
Fuck it.
No price is too high for accountability

This country must address accountability or someone, sometime, somewhere will probably find there are avenging angels that come out of the clouds of lies and do Gods work.

Oh, But isn't that what the Islamic extremists have been saying all along?

I guess American ostriches just want to believe our God's better than their God. Mean while my ostriches asses are getting sore. Boy, are they going to be pissed when they pull up their heads!

And Osama Bin Laden! What a fat a myth. There never was an Osama Bin Laden to lay any blame on. But if there was HE won, hands down. Look at the whole US nation Because of the Bush/ Cheney regime it's virtually in the toilet.

The people of this nation are just beginning to feel the pain. Watch when the sudo Middle class spend all their equitable savings value and during their retirement are singing the soup kitchen blues.

Man, it's a cold winter. How long can you tread water?

Now that the American people have to pay the bill for rebuilding a whole nation. Oh, have no doubt about it, We are paying, BIG TIME.
'Happy now that Bush and Cheney have quelled your fears of terrorists?

Cheney is plane evil.
Who's going to drive a stake through his heart before he dies of a massive coronary thrombosis?
