President Bush was in Baghdad yesterday on a surprise farewell visit highlighting the security deal recently reached between the U.S. and Iraq. CNN Baghdad correspondent Michael Ware reports this afternoon that during a press conference with Bush and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, an Iraqi man threw a shoe at Bush — “a grave insult in the Arab world” — but “it just sailed past his head”:

WARE: Well, Wolf, the most extraordinary thing. You may or may not believe this. We’re getting reports from the press pool that flew in with President Bush and apparently just a short, short time ago in a press conference with Prime Minister Maliki, an Iraqi man stood up in the press conference and threw a shoe at President Bush. But the reports we’re getting, it just sailed past his head and while the man was dragged out of the room, President Bush is said to have remarked that, “This was a size 10 shoe he threw at me you may want to know,” even as the man was heard screaming in the hallway.

McClatchy identified the man as Iraqi television journalist Muthathar al Zaidi and reports he threw both of his shoes at Bush just after he finished prepared remarks.

The New York Times notes that the first shoe “narrowly missed” and the second shoe also missed. “This is a farewell kiss, you dog,” Zaidi shouted.

Apparently, Bush was unfazed by the incident. “I didn’t feel the least bit threatened by it,” he said.

MSNBC has video of the incident with correspondent Patty Culhane reporting that Bush was "not injured" but that White House Press Secretary Dana Perino received a black eye in the scuffle of trying to contain Zaidi.

For an old guy Bush ducked those shoes fairly fast. I thought his security team was rather slow to protect him. It was an appropriate send off for Bushie boy's last official trip to Iraq.

Actually the shoe tossing is about as good as it gets. Over there a shoe-tossing is a severe showing of disrespect.

In Iraq, showing someone a shoe, especially the sole, is seen as one of the greatest insults one can give to another. Thus the shoe for the dog! Let Bush the Dog chew on it for a while ... a long while ... while he's in jail with Alberto, Donald, Wolfie, and all the rest!

Flowers? Not so much. 1.2 Million+ Iraqis dead and over 4 million displaced internally and externally as a direct result of illegal US war, and all Bush receives is a pair of shoes?

Americans are encouraged not to throw their shoes, just wave them around. I get the feeling that we haven't seen the end of masses of people taking off their shoes.

I haven't laughed that hard in months!!!
I usually hate clip loops, but not that one!
I'm betting this becomes the most watched UTube video of the year, if not of 'all time'.
gotta give it to W- he ducked and deflected well, Just like he has so far Politically and criminally, while laughing the whole time.W's Presidency summed up in 10 seconds of video.
Regardless of the Bitter analogy, Everytime I think about it, It makes me laugh, Outloud. Thanks for the Holiday Cheer Mr. Iraq Journalist, I just hope it does Not cost you Dearly. That Video was probabaly the first time the World has laughed together in a very long time! And the Impact of that release of the Worlds psyche should not be underestimated. laughter is medicinal, not just for individuals but for groups and the World Needed a Good laugh. And it served the purpose of not only giving us all something to laugh about, But AT. W is so lame that his 'assasination' attempt was pulled off with Two shoes! did the Assailant get his shoes Back? or did they keep them as evidence, along with his shoe laces incase he tries to hang himself for his 'heinous'crime? Everyone knows W's Just a card board cut out joke for CheneyCorp, why waste the cost of a bullet that surely will not be returned? Not to mention the real cost to such a plan? I wouldn't give up my life or freedom for W., He only ranks high enough to throw your old worn out shoes at, or rotten tomatos or...
Unfortunately the adage will no doubt remain consistent 'No Good Deed Goes Unpunished'..but for the moment buddy, you made the World Laugh and Cheer together. Thanks!

Thousands of Iraqis have called for the shoe-thrower to be released. (You know, because Iraq now has "free speech" and all.)

I hear the reporter was afterwards "interrogated". I hate to think how.
(I read on Democracy Now that he was also supposedly kicked and beaten by guards right after the incident.)

I haven't laughed that hard in a long, long time! This man has done what everyone in the world - and most decent Americans would like to do! I applaud him, and I really, really hope that he doesn't get into trouble!

George W. came into office, pretending to be a "uniter", well he finally got something right:the whole world is united, we all want him out of the office of the Presidency, NOW!!!!

If laughter is the best medicine, then I'm cured! Hopefully, the rest of the world can start to cure & heal!!!! If this won't be the most popular video clip on YouTube, I don't know what will! Of course George has better reflexes than I gave him credit for!!!!!

Huffpost has a slide show too Iraqi Throws Shoes At Bush During Press Conference (VIDEO)(SLIDESHOW)

Bush ducks and the shoe clearly hits the American flag. Is that how he defends our flag? Duck and let a shoe hit it?

Kinda like something you might witness at a penny arcade.

To bad the pitcher was high and outside.

What a waste of a perfectly good pair of shoes (I understand that this practice is Iraqi "custom").

Whatever happened to throwing rotten fruit?

"This is from from the widows and the orphans and those people you have killed". This is how it read in "Iraq Today" a blog which gives a rundown of daily events. Might as well give the man all the credit he deserves. I guess Bush didnt take it personally. Why would he? ANNA

I read on BBC news that the man also said, "this is for the widows and dead children," before throwing the second shoe.

how long it will take for people to realise that Bush etc have made this man disappear just for using a civil right.

I commend his behaviour, I just wish Cheney was behind Bush.

FOR IRAQUI JOURNALIST MUNTADERal-ZAIDI

A shoe was thrown by one reporter
To strike a blow at W.
Too bad he didn’t lob a mortar
And turn the THE MAN into fondue.
The press, of course, is so housebroken
They emphasized George Bush’s jokin’.
But throwing shoes are an attempt
Iraquis use to show contempt.
For what can show a man’s more sordid
Than soles of shoes that pick up dirt
And blood from people Bush has hurt.
Too bad that anger’s not exported
Back home where it won’t be a joke
When buckaroos go up in smoke.

During the press......

During the press conference in Iraqi prime minister office President Bush thrown two shoes by a journalist named Muntadhar al-Zeidi. President Bush just made a surprise visit to Iraq to give a press conference over the accords that were signed putting the US on a timetable for withdrawal from the country. The shoe throw was a mark of insult and contempt held by some of the Iraqi people for the U.S. President. But can a shoe actually make some extra cash? Apparently the going rate is $10 million for one shoe. And yes, I said “one shoe.” It appears Al-Zeidi did more than a favor for someone other than his people. To read about reactions around the world, and just where all that extra cash might go, check out this article.
