No More Mistaken Fire

Posted by Jodie Evans, CODEPINK Women for Peace: Action Blog at 2:30 PM on December 12, 2008.

Civilian deaths in Afghanistan will only increase if the U.S. commits more troops.

It sounds like a little boys' toy gun fight, a scuffle that, when the dust cleared, left six Afghan police and one civilian killed yesterday at the hands of shamed U.S. troops.

U.S. Special Forces opened fire Wednesday on the police near a Afghan police checkpoint, according to a U.S. military statement today, right after the police fired at them following an operation to kill an armed militant there. The troops thought the police were Taliban, and reacted -- shooting -- without checking. The troops had not warned the Afghan police that they'd be there.

Col. Jerry O'Hara, a U.S. military spokesman, stated he deeply regrets the "mistaken fire," which also collapsed the police checkpoint roof and damaged a nearby home.

But this "mistaken fire," a tragic result of sloppy planning and disproportionate response, will keep on raging. When more U.S. troops arrive in Afghanistan, they're bound to create more violence, more suffering and more recruits for the Taliban and Al Qaeda, and, of course, civilian "accidents." This accident will be just the beginning.

At the height of the U.S. invasion in 2001, hundreds of innocent Afghan civilians were killed and maimed by U.S. "smart bombs." Seven years later, they continue to be killed and maimed, U.S. soldiers are dying in greater numbers -- about 153 so far this year -- and the Taliban has a presence in 72 percent of the country according to a recent International Council on Security and Development report. It will be impossible to conquer tribal forces in a vast, rugged, thinly populated country like Afghanistan and the tribal areas of Pakistan.

But a much greater military presence is on its way, and even deeper into the heart of the country. Officials for the Marines plan to send anywhere between 3,000 to 5,000 troops to Afghanistan in 2009, according to a recent ABC News report, and about 3,700 Army troops will be sent south of Kabul -- allowing the potential for unrest and civilian deaths at the hands of the U.S. to officially spread from the Pakistan border closer to the formerly unoccupied areas further within the country.

It'll be a logistical nightmare, too. U.S. military officials are wracking their brains to determine how to create the best supply routes to the country. Not only is the terrain challenging, but the U.S. must work through or around Pakistan, and it has far less secure access to roads and skies there. In comparison, Iraq was a breeze.

That's a part of the plan for Afghani war lords, who hope to keep up the fight and "bleed U.S. troops," according to an interview in Time magazine with military expert Stephen Biddle of the Council on Foreign Relations. And, according to another interview in Time with one former NATO official, the Afghan warlords are like shrapnel lodged in an artery -- pulling it out may be worse than risking infection. "There are so many other things we have to worry about, so why go and open this can of worms?"

The world cannot afford many -- any -- more "mistaken fires." President-elect Obama must instead pursue a negotiated settlement with the more moderate elements of the Taliban and Afghan women. He must keep this can closed.

The only right way to peace is to do away with the hoax "War on Terror" by appointing a truly independant prosecuter to do a real investigation to investigate what is already know about what really happened on September 11, 2001 and what-ever isn't yet fully known. The whole world is coming to realize that there is real evidence that the World Trade Center was taken down by very involved wiring with demolition that could have been done only by persons that were knowingly given access to it's infrastructure, by those in charge of each of the buildings security. Who was in charge of Security prior to 9-11? There are very many proofs just waiting to be made official that prove that the buildings that were exploded down into dust, where little else but dust and steel beams remained, just as happens when buildings are taken down in other professionally executed demolitions. Eye witnesses of the demolitions were not allowed to give their first hand experiences to the Commission that was appointed to confirm the Offical hoax story. With the Bush regime soon to be out office, though it will certainly be imbarrassing for members of the prior commission there will no longer have the full ability for the Bushits completely prohibit the truth from being disclosed. Those responsible must be held accountable for their treason of 9-11 but also for all of the crimes of invasion war and "War on Terror" that followed, including the hoax war on terror. We must take back our hope for a free and democratic government. As well, the pre 9-11 drafted "Patriot Act" must be rescinded.

Remember darn it they are collateral damage, not people. And if they hadn't lived there they would not have been killed in their homes.

And there is a lot of monay in war to be made by the Merchants of Death.

Heard of Smedly Butler? If not, why not? Look up his "War is A Racket" speech to find out.

because they ACT THAT WAY & inside the Pentagon & bases, its called 'pragmatic' & 'taking care of business' ... bullies love self-justification, don't they?

Meanwhile, the Canadian Harper Cabinet is telling Canadian PeaceKeeping Troops to TAKE TRAINING FROM A BLACKWATER AFFILIATE.

you heard me... the Canadian peacekeeping forces who have been in the WORST of Helmand province for years & who have a reputation for being level-headed, honest & collaborative in building community buy-in around self-supportive UN efforts (despite the REAL reason being corporate pipelines)... removing landmines, preventing clusterbomb use, promoting & aiding infrastructure redevelopment, independence from warlord social controls...

...are to be trained to be the same goonsquad that the US power-structure commands their troops to emulate.

lovely.

COMPLAIN TO THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT about this CREEPY CONSERVATIVE MOVEMENT

PLEASE. Canada is STUCK in the middle of a massive political upheaval.

-The Progressive Coalition is in jeopardy.
-The NeoCon Convervative Harper gov't is running roughshod...
-Creepy Ignatieff ("I'm not a neocon, I'm a NEOLIBERAL corporate croney who wishes we could KILL MORE & should have been in Iraq!!!) is poised to take over the Liberal leadership from the Dion he nearly gutted during the last Party Leadership Race...

CANADIANS HAVE SUPPORTED AMERICAN LIBERALS, now we need YOUR HELP.

Help us, help you... so "we the Peoples of the Americas & beyond" have a chance at continuing our revolution for Human Rights.

Spread Love, not corporate dependence...

A FREE FOR ALL IN AFGANISTAN

I don't doubt that there are terrorists in Afganistan and lots of other places as well. But do we measure the high cost of killing one terrorist while so many innocent lives are in danger? This is how terrorists are home grown. Everytime one of these friendly fire accidents happen how many young Afghan guys decide to join the other side. We create enemies for our own mlitary. How do the great thinkers justify consciously making a bad situation worse? We send more soldiers and they recruit more members for their cause. We are unable to identify members of the Taliban and AlQaeda. I understand how this can happen, but we jeopordize the civilians and our own military as well. Not a winning strategy. Thanks, ANNA
