It looks like a bomb threat to me. Who is he aiming it at? Me? I sure hope not.

I wonder if I am more sensitive to bomb threats because my family actually was the victim of a terrorist bombing? Maybe so. We had a rental house when I was a girl and my folks rented it to a black guy. He moved out after someone but a bomb in the mail box. It blew up. That was my childhood home and someone blew up our mail box. It was really scary.

They should both be arrested, but only together, so as not to let one slip away.

see at the top of the vid where it says "Comedy Central: The Colbert Report?" Now chill out and have a happy Hannukah, merry Christmas, happy Kwanzaa, happy secular paid vacation day, etc.

This is blasphemous, though I am sure that's too big of a word for Mr. Keith and his obtuse 3rd grade lexicon. It's deplorable that this man, and others like him, are my fellow Americans!

By which I mean I had some pretty good gravy last night.

I also mean, & this is directed at the lunatics on this thread, what the fuck is wrong with you?!?

This is from the Colbert Show. The lyrics are clearly recognizable as "Colbert" in their phrasing. The background imagery is far too goofy & obscure to have been provided by someone who would take the supposed message of the song seriously. Really, they simply wouldn't have had the imagination.

Now, I don't pretend to understand why Steven Colbert (in my mind, one of recent history's most cleverly outspoken Liberals, not to mention one of Liberalism's most successful "culture warriors") & Toby Keith are on-screen buddies. Perhaps Colbert simply enjoys fencing with his outrageous persona & Keith merely appreciates the massive exposure that being on the Report provides. Maybe Toby Keith is, like Colbert, not simply the absurd stereotype he plays in public. Maybe his jingoism started as something of a put-on that got out of control? Who knows how many layers there are to this onion?

What I do know is that, listening to the lyrics, no one as capital-P "patriotic" as Toby Keith could have sung them without placing his tongue in his cheek beforehand.

That, & that PZ Myers continues to demonstrate that he is a largely humorless, attention-starved zealot who's been in way over his head since he branched out from simply defending evolution into general social "criticism".

Especially this song.
To me, Keith was poking fun at his own "Redneck" image and the ridiculous "War on Christmas" argument the Right Wing likes to bring out of the dust this time of year.
Keith has state that he voted for Clinton...twice. He can't be that bad. He was just another reactionary, post 9-11 Conservative, with minimal information or understanding.

BRING IT OWN, KOWBOI!

This dumbed-down piece of musical trash is but the first salvo of declaration of war by Xian bigots against the rest of Amerikkka...and the world. Patriotism and fundamentalism are in perfect fusion now, so you can't tell one from the other. Amerikkkanism or KristoFascism: what's the diff?

No doubt these racist/homophobic/misogynist goons are really pissed right now, over the defeat of McCain and Palin. But this fusing of Kristian Zionism with Amerikkkan patriotism has been cultivated for many decades now, starting with Prez Raygun.

So, if anyone is surprised at this NaziAmerikkkan bully outcome, I can only say: "From which planet did you just arrive?"

--(I break out into war song:)

Civil war is on the way,
with gay marriage in the fray.
Both left and right
will start the fight,
by claiming queers have caused
this plight.
Their eyes will bulge,
their voice will sing:
"Homos are to blame for every-
thing!"

But once the war has faded 'way,
the dust settled to reveal a
New Day,
we'll see the entire planet has gone

totally, irrevocably, irresistably, unerroneously, indefatigably, indisputably, and unswervingly

gay!

--(end of my war song, for the nonce.)

AS a modern-day gay activist and visionary, I foresaw this civil war triggered by homophobic dogma, over ten years ago, and warned our community and allies to prepare...via Usenet, my web site, my blog, and various message boards. Want proof of my claims? See:

What part of American History do they AVOID teaching in the Schools these Hicks attend?
What Kind Of 'Christian' Shall we All be forced to be Toby? Catholic, Protestant Lutheran, Baptist,Episcopalian....Pray Tell, Which one Won't get my head cut off Under your 'Blessed' Rule? Love the House bombing, which Christian Sect encourages that again?
I'm sick of this deception the Zealots are committing, NOT All 'Chrisitians' Are the SAME! Like Toby, some 'Christians' do not support the notion of 'Turn the Other Cheek'.Yet also the reason a good number of Christians are part of the Anti War movement, they kinda adhere to the notion that 'Thou shall Not Kill'.
Bet Toby with his big bucks is also a supporter of 'Trickle Down' economics. Why are all these type Assholes trying to recreate the english Monarchy (or papal rule) here in a Country founded on it's antithesis?
"Better to remain silent and be thought a Fool than open your mouth and Dispell ALL doubt'....Just sing your 'Cowboy' songs Toby, Your knowledge of American History and Vision are obviously lacking....Kinda like your record sales.
In fact If you Love the combo of church & State so dearly...Go to Afghanistan, the Taliban would love your endorsement to help perpetuate their oppressive tyrannical Regime.

Hi kids,

Toby Keith might be a patriotic country singer, but he's actually quite liberal, as are many country stars (see Faith Hill and Tim McGraw). So, yes, this is a satire.

Do some homework before you flip the fuck out.

To those of you who are confused ... is this for real or is it satire?

Just check out Toby's "Beer for the horses and Whiskey for my men"

Along the same lines, did you see Hank Williams Jr. sing his reworked "Family Tradition" in support of the Republican ticket?

Hank Sr. was turning over in his grave.

This is America, and we all enjoy First Amendment rights.

Unfortunately, there's a lot of intolerance and hate found in this U S of A.

I agree with Mr. Keith on the extremes some go to rewrite our Constitution, and I support his view on the issue of Separation of Church & State. I don't need a lawyer to explain the Bill of Rights to me, I can read.

However, the rest of the video was bizarre & sort of shocking, wasn't it?

Chill out Toby.

Good satire, but you would think they could find a way to thank the Pagans for starting the tradition, and make fun of the xians for stealing it. Historically jesus had nothing to do with starting Xmas.

NOT a satire unless...
Posted by: HoboHomo on Nov 29, 2008 7:26 PM
Current rating: 2    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
...you also think "Courtesy of the Red White and Blue" is also a satire.

But what it looks like to me, is just more uber-patriotic tripe with intent to rile up the rednecks into a violent (and pointless) rebellion.

The patriotic machismo in "Holiday Message for Liberals" is identical to that displayed in "Courtesy of the Red White and Blue". The ONLY difference is that the former was hosted in a comedy venue. (No doubt it has also been presented in a wide assortment of non-comedy sites, with absolutely NO indication that it is meant as satire.)

Otherwise, the macho violence promoted in BOTH videos is abhorrent and certainly anti-American.

And you can bet your Yankee Doodle to a Dandy, that right-wing goons will spread this ignorant video like wildfire, as a SERIOUS declaration of war against all progressive people of ANY stripe: intellectuals, democrats, gays, blacks, you name it.

You who claim to be liberals yet persist in calling this horrid video merely satire, serve only to promote the Beast of Ignorance...thus becoming nothing more than puppets for the violent right wing.

Ain't you so PROUD of yesselfs? ('Scuse me, but where's the puke bucket when ya need it?)

With apologies to all the decent folks...

but to those of us outside the USA, this Xmas "song" (if we can dignify it as such) is an object lesson "lite" in why the rest of the planet has had so little patience with your country over last half-dozen years.
The video and song contain all the usual GOP base touchstones: guns, bombs, violence, God, intolerance, utterly juvenile patriotism, shitty c&w music (though that's a redundancy) all wrapped around the breath-taking assumption that the Xmas story and Santa are (wait for it)...Americans! Huh?
Ah yes, Santa and Uncle Sam are actually the same person! Jesus is a 'Murricun!
By the way, just who is Toby Keith, anyhow? Sorry, but I know there's a tendency amongst some Americans to think that just because a person is famous within the US, he/she must ipso facto be "world" famous, too. (Rather like the absurd assumption that, when a team wins the Superbowl, it's the "World Champeen.")
And you wonder why the rest of the world is pissed at y'all?
Again, my apologies, but christ almighty...

Only centrists have a sense of humor.

If the far-left and the far-right share something in common, it's their ability to get offended over something funny.

Come on people. This video was cut from the Colbert christmas special. He had several singrs on all who did self-satarizing songs. The one above: Willie Nelson who did a song as the 4th wise man who gives "Baby Jesus" a gift of "an herb which burns much sweeter than frankensense" and John Legend who did a heartfelf and soulful love song about nutmeg. All, including Mr. Kieth were done tongue firmly in cheek.

Why does everyone have to laugh?

If you're so sure that there's nothing wrong with this, and because it's satire then that means you're supposed to think it's funny, then just leave your comment of appreciation and move on.

Why is it that others are not allowed to comment, with their own feelings, thoughts, reactions, words, without having a bunch of insecure people start mocking them and telling them what they should think and what they should find funny? Why do I have to laugh in order for it to be funny to you? Why can't I say that it's not funny to me and I think it's dangerous? I thought that's what this comment section is for.

For some of us, it's just not that funny anymore. We've seen it, heard it, and felt it, and noted the comedy that comes from dealing with problems. We've moved on though. We can only take so much, and when you or someone you love is effected by hate, it just isn't as funny.

I'm sorry that our sensitivity is inconvenient for you. I'm sorry that some of us have boundaries, and feel the need to establish them. That's how people survive and protect themselves.

It's called "feedback". If you say something shitty in front of me, even if it's a joke, I might express that I don't want to hear stuff like that. It's very simple. You decide to either not say offensive things to me, or decide that your freedom to say those things is more important than talking to me.

The same goes for our media, only it's on a larger scale and has more consequences. If we see something we don't like, we say so.

Get over it, and laugh by yourself. You don't need our approval, and we don't need yours.
