Obama Campaign Takes the Fight to FOX

Posted by ZP Heller, Brave New Films at 11:01 AM on October 28, 2008.

Watch Obama spokesman Bill Burton stand up to FOX's Megyn Kelly.

FOX News is in the desperate throes of backing a losing party.  Despite what Megyn "Obama's Baby Mama" Kelly would have you believe, FOX has been the GOP's mouthpiece throughout this election, viciously maligning Barack Obama while pushing the party's conservative agenda. (For proof of just how much slander they have spewed, check out FOX Attacks Obama, FOX Attacks Obama 2, or FOX Attacks Obama Just Like Kerry.) In fact, I hold them as responsible as McCain's most bigoted supporters for stoking the racial prejudice and xenophobic hatred that we're now seeing in campaign events across the country.  Amazingly though, the Obama campaign has begun calling out FOX for their loathsome media bias.

First, Obama criticized FOX on national television during the third presidential debate.  Then, in an interview for The New York Times Sunday magazine, Obama told Matt Bai, "I am convinced that if there were no Fox News, I might be two or three points higher in the polls."  And now we have Obama staffers confronting FOX on their own network.  Just watch as Bill Burton remains unflappable during this heated exchange with Kelly, who completely loses her cool.

In response to McCain's ludicrous attack on Obama for being "the Redistributor" of wealth -- an attack FOX has of course perpetuated and exacerbated with their Joe the Plumber socialist nonsense -- Burton calmly tells Kelly: "This is a fake news controversy drummed up by the all too common alliance of FOX News, the Drudge Report and John McCain, who apparently decided to close out his campaign with the same false, desperate attacks that have failed for months."

It is, as Burton says, a fake news controversy. Even conservatives like George Will have said that 95 percent of the government's job is to redistribute wealth. But in a hopeless attempt to paint Obama as a Socialist, the Republicans and FOX News alike are on the verge of losing a crucial ideological battle on free market fundamentalism, which is probably why Burton's composure causes Kelly to become choleric.

FOX isn't merely rearranging the deck chairs on the GOP's Titanic anymore.  They're violently throwing those chairs at everyone trying to make their way to a lifeboat.

FOX has been in trouble for some time now. The disconnect between their passionate devotion to GWB and their need to support the GOP candidate even if he himself is throwing GWB over the railing in order to save his failing candidacy must be causing nightmares for the news editors at FOX. They are caught in their own propoganda war - fighting themselves as well as fellow conservatives, Republican turncoats...let alone the fight they really want to take to Barack and the Dems. I am really planning on watching FOX on election night - just for the fun of it all.

I couldn't even finish watching this clip. Megan Kelly is so damn overbearing, I wanted to reach through the screen and strangle her.

Sorry, Megan - but being loud and obnoxious doesn't make you right.

What a ridiculous attmept to seize some Free media attention. Amazes me how far people will compromise their integrity to be in the good graces of the losing team.
Their desperation is pathetic and disturbing all at the same time.
FYI FOX the majority of Americans HATE Trickle down and have since the '80's. We also see McCains main focus on Capitol Gains Tax breaks....Not many of US worry about Capitol Gains tax...so he is NOT talking to US, he's talkin gto the assholes who have ben screwing US for Decades...Ya Know the ones who clusterfucked the economy,AGAIN!
When thousands a Day are facing foreclosure, 'Spreading the Wealth' doesn't only sound Logically, it is the ONLY MORAL thing to Do!!!
Socialism, It's not...It's called Goverance for the Benefit of the Group (Country).
Trickle Down has been nothing more than Feudalism comes to America in the 20th Century....We're leaving it there Too!
Trickle down has not only been innately flawed because Greedy does not control itself, but it IS fundementally UnAmerican. FYI, Reason we sought Independence from the 'Trickle Down' Monarchy of England!
American is mroe adverse to Feudalism than socialism.Indentured slavery does not Bode well with US either!Kinda Defeats the Whole purpose of Founding a Democratic Free market don't Ya Think? socialism may spread the Wealth by asking each to contribute tothe collective. But it does NOT interfer with a persons ability to access the free market, Democratic process,Exercise Personal Rights and freedoms, climb the ladder of opportunity.
Feudalism does..They control every aspect of their Serfs (working class) lifes.Because they are the Managing Them and controlling the Wealth and resources.so guess Who hates to share, The Feudal Lords!
I've lived under Feudalism long enough, Let's go back to our Community Minded founding Doctrines. This Treasonous Charade has gone on long enough already!

What a bitch! What a nasty biased attitude. How unprofessional. I don't know anyone that spends their time watching anything on FOX NEWS! I'd enjoy a bowel movement and a root canal better than spending any time watching anything they have to report. They certainly do have their OWN AGENDA. One of the main directors at FOX NEWS was a supporter for Nixon, and George H BUSH! ROVIAN POLITICS AT ITS BEST! NEOCONS! That is what they comprise. I am surprised that he was so nice. She was beyond rude. Just a nasty biased bitch!

FOX is a campaign arm of the GOP run by very profit oriented capitalist who clearly applies the "big business gets big favors" school of political influence. Rupert really should be listed on the Republican ticket but I don't think he has American citizenship? At least then we would know who ALL the competitors are.

Alternet should really do a piece, that tracks the 4-6 major networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, FOX, MSNBC) and the money trail vs reporting influence over the last 10 years.

Megan lists a number of sources for bolstering her contention that Fox is actually less biased than other news outlets. Now, of course, all corporate media is slanted, no doubt. But, does anyone have the fact checker out to prove her wrong?

Former White House Press Secretary stated in an July 2008 interview that he routinely sent Republican Talking Points directly delivered to news commentary folks (like Hanity) instead of journalists.
FOR THE RECORD, I HATE, ABSOLUTELY HATE FOX NEWS. AS I HAVE ALREADY POSTED, I'D RATHER HAVE A BOWEL MOVEMENT OR A DENTAL ROOT CANAL DONE ALL DAY LONG RATHER THAN WATCH A MOMENT OF FOX FAUX NEWS. THERE AREN'T ENOUGH WORDS IN ANY LANGUAGE ON THIS ENTIRE PLANET STRONG ENOUGH TO EXPRESS MY DISLIKE OF FOX AND ALL THEIR BIASED FOLKS.

They often do "hit pieces" and doctor and alter photos of subjects by adding dark circles under eyes, making ears and nose bigger, shading faces,to enhance their "hits" on targeted subjects, and are consistently seen as spreading their own propaganda and agendas.

A poll conducted by Rasmssen Reports during 2004, found them to be the most politically biased network in public view. A panel of 547 Journalists found that Fox News was ultra conservative.

The chairman, Rupert Murdoch, Austrailian Born and major share-holder age 77, is the 109th richest man in the world at an estimated $8.3 Billion and counting. In 2003, he acquired Direct TV and ownes MySpace. He launched FOX news to compete with Ted Turner and CNN. In an interview, he stated he was supporting OBAMA, can you believe that? He is a money man, and is making money from a segment of society that feeds from this narrow-minded right-wing mentality. Makes you crazy huh? (6) MORE DAYS UNTIL ELECTION DAY OBAMA! IT IS A MUST!!!

I just wished Obama hadn't allowed Bill O'LIEly to bully him into submission on the surge working but now I realize Obama only referred to the short term result and not the long term fiasco that followed just like every "conservative" policy that offers a quickie followed by long term failures. Obama had better go progressive/liberal, BULLETPROOF himself as he's about to face the same hell as FDR did in 1934 when an attempted rightwing military coup was set up against FDR, and not allow silly culture wars such as guns, abortion, same sex marriage, and all that crap which the government has no business interfering with get in the way. And he had better REVERSE course on being too friendly to the goons on Wall $treet or he's up the creek come 2012 !

I'm not a big Nader fan, but one good point he makes is that media in the United States is literally just given contracts with public airwaves (Yes I believe that includes satellite) for private use (in this case Fox). When it becomes so clear that stations like Fox are more of a determent to "American Democracy" (Not that any corporately owned news media could be anything other) as Fox has become, perhaps it's time to set an example and take back the public airwaves that Fox uses and have a responsible media outlet replace it. I would like to see the same thing done with all corporate media (well I'm actually a dirty socialist of course so what do I know) but starting with Fox would be a good idea in my opinion.

What Obama

(or anyone going up against Fox) needs is a spokeswoman with a voice like Julia Child had which *no one* can drown out. This overtalking is a common tactic with all the right wing noise makers (even to cutting off someone's mike, as O'Reilly does).

The spokesman/woman also needs to start out with a soft voice so the audio has to be turned up and so even a slight increase in volume can then get across (and if the volume is cut on just the speaker it should be obvious to the listener).

A fair part of the problem with being on these right wing stations are of a 'technical' nature rather than just what is said (although that's also very important), and the spokesperson needs to be aware of the 'production values' and manipulation.

I wish I could see one of these anchors interview an actual, honest-to-god socialist. You know, the sort that live all around the country and who haven't had a candidate to get behind since Eugene Debs. I think two minutes with one of them would be enough to convince anyone that Barack Obama is no socialist. Hell, they could call me if they want.

When your slogan is now the butt of the joke the only thing left to do is say it louder with more anger. Give her credit, she did what Ruppert told her to do. She now resembles the base of her audience; loud, over the top and out of ideas and grasping at the pathetic straws. My wife kept telling me to turn it off, she could not take it. It was like watching a train wreck. Dude was as cool as the other side of the pillow, wasn't he?

No wonder the intelligent people of the world avoid FOX. Egads, talk about emotionally unhealthy! Fox was fashioned by the whacked-out rads and it hasn't improved with age.

Back in the day...

before TV, the major source of "news" for the voting public was newspapers, and they were extrememly partisan, particularly local newspapers. Many towns (even small towns) often had at least two papers that presented completely opposite views from one another. Those that didn't, and were subjected to only one viewpoint, often gravitated toward the end of the political spectrum espoused by the editor of the local paper. Towns, and even entire rural counties, became known as Democratic or Republican and life could be uncomfortable for residents with the opposing views and opinions.

When television became the predominant medium for news, we were fortunate enough to have people like Walter Cronkite, Edward R. Murrow and Huntley and Brinkley, who realized the power of their positions and made a great effort to present information in as neutral a manner as possible, despite what their personal political leanings might be. That standard went by the wayside with the appearance of "conservative AM talk radio" all across rural America, and FOX TV under the ownership and management of Rupert Murdoch. He knew his right-wing bias would be obivous to all but the totally brain-dead and intentionally chose the catch phrase "fair and balanced" to deflect that perception. It was effective for quite some time, and is only recently being seen for what it is. And the only thing that has made it obvious, is the emergence actual strong "liberal" commentators on Air America radio and now some of cable TV.

Up until recently, most of the mainstream media has been hypersensitive to the rightwing allegation that they are "liberal", because they have been. But liberal is not the polar opposite of conservative, as conservatives (right-wingers) would have you believe. Liberal simply means you are open to the views and opinions of everyone, including those of both the left and the right, which makes liberal a pretty centrist position. When the right wing initiated its attack against the center, describing it as "radical left", and the center (liberal) failed to fully comprehend what was happening and respond strongly, the whole context got shifted toward the right.

We've been living under right-wing extremist governance (or the occasional neutered centrist) for some time now, and it's really created problems. Problems so great that they seem to have finally gotten the attention of even the majority of average complacent Americans (who tend to be liberal, whether they call themselves that or not). And they're energized by the candidacy of Barack Obama, who promises to bring an end to this right-wing nightmare. The questions we now await the answers to are, has America finally transcended its racist tendencies of the past and become capable of trusting someone of obvious skill and talent, despite his "color", and has the right-wing managed to corrupt the election process sufficiently to "elect" an obviously unqualified hack who will allow them to continue their plunder?

Does the right-wing even care? Is there even enough left to steal to make it worth the effort? Their position, as I see it, seems to be, "let the Democrats run the show for awhile and we'll blame them for the pain of rebuilding" or "if you're stupid enough to elect one of ours again, what the hell, we'll kick through the ashes and see if there's anything left worth taking".

If it wasn't so completely insanely life-threatening, it might actually be entertaining. I already voted, and will be helping other people get to the polls on tuesday. I hope we get it done this time and elect Barack Obama, I'm really gettin' too old for this bullshit.

So I will still have time to pop open a bottle or two of champagne and celebrate whilst watching these jokers implode and then the Gotterdammerung and self immolation on Wednesday. This is going to be too good for words. Except for the word and concept schadenfreude. Lots and lots of schadenfreude. As my grandfather sang in 1932 on his way to the polls, "Happy days are here again"

And VOTE and tell and take your friends to VOTE . If your state or county has early voting take advantage of that now. VOTE
