McCain Says Western Pennsylvania Is Racist

Posted by Sam Stein, Huffington Post at 4:51 PM on October 21, 2008.

Oh, man, what a gaffe. This will certainly go down as one of the more awkward moments of this campaign cycle.

Sen. John McCain offered, on Tuesday, what may go down as one of the more awkward moments of this campaign cycle, in which -- speaking in Western Pennsylvania -- he declared he 'couldn't agree more' with the sentiment that some of the people from that region were openly racist.

"You know, I think you may have noticed that Senator Obama's supporters have been saying some pretty nasty things about Western Pennsylvania lately," McCain told the audience in the town of Moon Township. "And you know, I couldn't agree with them more."

Oops. It was, in many ways, a reflection of how tired these candidates have become as this nearly two-year-long campaign hits its final strides. And, to be fair, the crowd eventually got the point; booing at the reference to John Murtha, who said last week that some of his Western Pennsylvania constituents were racist. But there was a stunned silence after the gaffe.

For political humorists it is gold, made even more potent by McCain's botched attempt at a recovery. "I couldn't disagree with you," he declared (referencing what, no one knows). "I couldn't agree with you more than the fact that Western Pennsylvania is the most patriotic, most god-loving, most, most patriotic part of America, and this is a great part of the country."

The line was reminiscent of Sarah Palin touting the pro-America parts of the country. And actually could be just as politically dicey than the inadvertent labeling of Western Pennsylvanians as racists.

Either way, the video is worth a watch... or three.

Can you believe Murtha calling Western PA racist..It has become apparent the democrats are the racist in the group.. What happens if Obama loses..Are the dems going to cry stolen election..Americans are racist. Are we forgetting the it;'s the blacks that are voting for Obama regardless of policy..Powell is the latest to demonstrate his racism.

Now, Biden thinks because Obama is weak and untested he will be tested by a foreign power fast. And Franks thinks it's ok to substantially raise taxes on those making a good income.. what ever that is!

Pretty funny, the dems are sending signals no one is reading. Get ready for a real screwing! Especially when Obama cant control the dynamic duo, Pelosi and Reid!

Too bad the maverick has been telling lies so long that he simply doesn't remember a true statement in a carload of sound bites!

He's well past the time to retire to his rocking chair. He must have betrayed every friend he ever had already.

It's not just the blacks who are voting for Obama; sorry (not) to burst your bubble. Is it just me, or does anyone else detect racist overtones in your commentary?

Racism vs. race preference

Let's clear up these cries of racism when blacks vote for blacks. Webster's defines racism as a belief that race determines traits and abilities and that racism occurs when one race believes it is superior to another. Blacks are not claiming that they are superior to anyone when they favor a black candidate. They are expressing a preference for someone whose experiences are similar to their own. If they said Obama was the best candidate ONLY because he was black and blacks are smarter, more capable, etc., that could be construed as racism. If anything, they are saying that for once a black man is finally seen as EQUAL to his white opponents in stature and potential. And if he wins, it will be because people believed he was the better candidate, not because blacks are inherently better than whites. No race is better than another . . . and if you are one of those creationists who literally believe we are all descended from Adam and Eve, that makes us all BROTHERS. Funny how the religious fundies somehow keep overlooking that.

This sounds like something bu$h could have said. Mangled phrases and sick policies are all we get from McCain.

The headline of your article is not true.

I'm a strong Obama supporter, and I think the choice of that headline, that McCain said Western PA is racist, is no better than the twisting of words from the McCain camp.

McCain lost it, as I hope he loses Nov 4, but he did not actually say what your headline conveyed.

Don't give the GOPhers any fodder for ridicule please.

It's Not Slander If It Is True

I was born in Western Pennsylvania. > 90% of my family on both sides still live there. Quite simply, yes, the place harbors racism. Not everyone is a kloset klansman ! There are enough of them though to make get togethers uncomfortable. These days it is generally not openly on display. It is held in a dark secret place, allowed freedom only in the voting booth, and amongst beer drinking cronies.

The white racists are all over the country. They are not confined to wester PA by any stretch of the imagination. I live in the central valley of CA. White racists flourish here.
FYI: I am 70 year old white retired Air Force veteran.

Mystery wrapped in an enigma inside a numbskull. He's his own worst enemy. I'd LOVE for Obama to turn Joe Biden loose and let him go on a rant against mcloser. What a hoot that'd be! Easily as good as what Bill Maher or Jon Stewart could dream up, and the best part is that it'd be the TRUTH!

Sam Stein, your brief commentary makes sense until the close:

"The line was reminiscent of Sarah Palin touting the pro-America parts of the country. And actually could be just as politically dicey than the inadvertent labeling of Western Pennsylvanians as racists."

What could be "just as politically dicey than" what?

Actually, I would be upset in Pennsylvania (my father was born in Pittsburg) if I wanted my state's ETHANOL companies to thrive.
Jeb Bush in Florida met with Brazilian agricultural ministries, after being introduced by Florida Crystals in Florida in 2006 (emails from FTAA Mr Cobbs and Jorge Azzurietta). And now McCain with W and Jeb Bush's blessing says we should stop charging Brazil tariffs on their MILLIONS of gallons of ethanol.

The reason there is a tariff is so they can pay taxes into the US. But they are bringing ethanol through the Caribbean from a corporation through Jamaica. That is where Cobbs' (FTAA president) wife is ambassador. Jeb has an Interamerican ethanol coalition corp that has $250,000 in donations. St Pete Times Sydney Freeman did a story of Jeb's 5 527's and $6 MILLION of corporate donations.
Maybe McCain should remember that Penn state would like their ethanol companies to make money. McCain has said the US should stop charging TARIFFS on Brazil. The US companies need to make the money .
