Fact Checking 'Joe the Plumber'

Wurzelbacher told the CBS Morning News that he feels like he’s being "used by the Republican Party as a pawn to make their point."

During a campaign stop in Ohio this week, Ohio plumbing business owner Joe Wurzelbacher questioned Barack Obama about his plan to increase taxes for the top five percent of income earners. Noting that he was planning to purchase a company that "makes" between $250,000 and $280,000, Wurzelbacher wondered what impact Obama's tax plan would have on him.

Last night, "Joe the Plumber" was first invoked by John McCain to attack Obama's tax plan. He was referenced 23 times by the candidates. After the debate, Wurzelbacher applauded McCain: "He's got it right as far as I go." But Joe is ill-informed.

Jake Tapper reports that it's not even clear if the figures Wurzelbacher cited take expenses into account. If his net profit is below $250,000, "Joe the Plumber" would be eligible for an Obama tax cut. Dean Baker explains that, under Obama's plan, the tax on income above $250,000 would increase by 3 percentage points from 33 percent to 36 percent -- which means that, if his net profits are above $250,000, Wurzelbacher could expect to see his tax bill rise by between $0-$900.

Wurzelbacher told the CBS Morning News that he feels like he's being "used by the Republican Party as a pawn to make their point."

During a press conference this morning, Joe the Plumber answered some questions from the media. He said he was "bothered" by the fact that his name was invoked so many times. "To be honest with you, I'm sure Obama didn't want my name mentioned," he said. "I wish they had talked about, you know, more important issues."

Wurzelbacher isn't just wrong about Obama's tax plan -- he's also misguided about a few other things. Here's a sampling of what he told the press this morning:

- "Social Security's a joke. I have parents. I don't need another set of parents called the government. Let me take my money and invest it how I please. Social Security, I've never believed in, don't like it, hate that it's forced on me."

- "I'm not sorry that we're in Iraq. ... We've liberated another country. I mean, you know, freedom. ... I don't know if you guys are Christians or not, but it's like someone coming to Jesus and becoming saved. These guys have freedom. ... Has it kept us safe? Absolutely. I believe in that 100 percent."

Digg!

I used to like McCain when he had control of his own message. But now he seems so far out of his own skin that he's extremely uncomfortable. I wager he won't live 2 years after all of the pressure he has undergone, especially trying to keep a straight face about the running mate that he was forced to choose.

The man was one day a good senator, but he doesn't make a good puppet, because his anger takes over when the strings get pulled. Retirement is definitely in order.

'Joe Six Pack', 'Joe the Plumber' ..what's next "Joe the Arsonist"
Come On 'Joe six pack' is not just a slight against Joe Biden, but anyone they consider Low life Drunks....'Six pack a Night' kinda 'Joe' who we get clips of in his 'Wife Beater' shirt on 'Cops'?
Is this not an Innuendo that those who are associated with Beer are Alcholics?Aren't Blue Collar workers the Ones they feature on Beer commericals. Sarah seems to be indicating Their campaign thinks all Blue collar Workers are Out of control Drunks
As for 'Joe the Plumber', is not septic systems on of their specialities..so Filthy and dirty is par for the course as a Plumber.
Is 'Joe the Plumber' not also considered Blue Collar? So don't both portray a picture of Filthy Drunken labors.
Personlly I take exception to the Portrait they are painting of Blue Collar Workers, and of Joe Biden. Are they trying to make inference about Biden and inadvertantly Slinging mud right back at the Working class?
I Find it Patronizing and Prejudicial.

I pay my plumber $100 an hour and he has the gall to complain about paying taxes on it?

If it weren't for taxes, there wouldn't be a water main or sewer system in the country. Where does he think the water comes from and goes to?

I don't mind paying him, since he has plumbing tools and I don't. But if he wants to pay less in taxes, putting more burden on me, I'll call him out for being a greedy asshole who doesn't know how his profession got started.

What happened to Joe Six-Pack? I have to presume that once he saw what happened to his 401-K he became Joe 12-pack and is now in rehab. If Joe the Plumber has revenues of $300,000, his operating costs, depreciation, debt service, etc will give him a net taxable profit of well south of that number. The vast majority of small business owners pay nearly no income taxes at all because of the way you can apply your costs of business to your net revenues.

Send Joe the Plumber to Iraq

I'm sure all the dead and injured Iraqi people and the maimed children who will grow up to hate the US are grateful for our wisdom. Glad to hear Joe doesn't care about WMD and lying, that as long as we are bringing freedom the means justify the ends. Joe sees Iraq as better off now despite our total destruction of their infrastructure and way of life. To Joe we are heros, when to the rest of the world we are terrorist. But hey, Joe knows everything. You know Joe, you're only 34 maybe you should enlist and go on over and save the savages. Hey if you lose a limb or your life, it's just part of God's plan.

There is a reason that McShame chose this guy, he is clearly a rightwing nutjob. Who doesn't remember registering for a minority party? Oh and Joe, when you make over $250,000 a year being a plumber in OH (which is highly doubtful) or course you don't want to pay more taxes. I mean, you are so special and valuable cause of your paycheck - why should you pay your fair share. Then again if you understood business taxes at all, you'd know that despite the tax rate stated, with all of your deductions you will pay considerably less than you do today as an idividual. Tax code favors the wealthy so Joe, if you want to join them, get with the program.

This guy is Sarah Palin without hair and the sooner his 15 minutes is over, the better.

I actually feel bad for this guy. He's not running for office and was drafted unwillingly to be the new face of the McCain / Palin campaign since the two candidates have become such jokes.

Sure, he apparently listens to a bit too much Rush and O'Reilly. He is also someone who has been tricked by his preacher and talk radio to vote against his own self interest for years. And he was the one who thought it would be such great game to debate one of America's brightest.

Nevertheless, those of you who are making nasty comments about him should try and imagine being in shoes. Suddenly he is the butt of jokes on blogs, news panels, and no doubt will be mocked on SNL tomorrow night. Of all of McCain's gimicky campaign maneuvers, this might end up being his nastiest.

Joe the Plumber may have a very interesting connection to John McCain; Joe the Plumber (Joe Wurzelbacher) of Ohio may be related to one Robert Wurzelbacher of Ohio, who happens to be Charles Keating's son-in-law and was the former senior vice president of American Continental, the parent company of the infamous Lincoln Savings and Loan.
Oops.
Wikipedia stated this same connection, and also stated the Joe The Plumber was actually a registered Republican. That was just Before the page was scrubbed at noon today (10/16/08).

Wow, Joe somehow made enough money to buy this

having the smarts to do so. He's proud we
invaded a sovereign country for no good reason
and turned that country inside out. We've
destroyed 1000's upon 1000's of lives and he
invokes "Jesus" into it. He's as insane as the
party he's chosen to support. These "do-gooders"
don't want government in their lives as long as
they are successful. They don't mind using
government services though. They just don't like
to pay their fair share. Well too bad. It's
fair that these do-gooders pay more than the
rest of us. Their impact on everything is
bigger due to their having more of everything.
I sure wish these overly compensated people
would just stop whining and showing us their
greed. It really is disgusting.

is not licensed, does not make nearly $250,000 profit per year, and is in no position to be "buying" the plumbing business for which he works (which, by the way, has profits roughly 1/2 of what Joe claimed and by which he is reportedly paid in the area of $40,000 per year). Joe is a plant. We should be asking who put him up to it. Was he compensated for bailing up Obama with his hypothetical question, which bears no resemblance to Joe's actual life? I smell a rat. Of course he feels used . . . he was.

This was an obvious SET-UP! Desperation reigns supreme in the McStain campaign, which means they find this guy to set-up Obama. "Let's get the guy to stand in line and embarrass Obama on his Economic Plan (with cameras rolling, of course), then bring him up at the debate to FURTHER embarrass Obama, and then let the red-meat-craving media go to town on this! Finally, we have a campaign strategy!"

And Joe's too stupid to see he's been used! Bet his tax lien "magically" gets paid for him.

Talk about pathetic!!!

If you see the video with Joe Plumber asking Obama the question about his taxes, you notice Obama takes the time to explain exactly how it will affect the man. He took a lot of time to do it, and did it carefully and in a way easy to understand. Yet Joe said later that he didn't get a straight answer but a tap dance.
Joe was not listening.

McCain focused attention on "Joe the Plumber" and his concern about Obama's tax plan. The collateral damage is "Joe's" not as squeaky clean as Republicans might have wished. And average Americans probably aren't concerned about an extra 3% tax on earnings over $200,000 or $250,000.

The real concern with Obama should be his blatant lies about his connections with ACORN. He has repeatedly said he only served as legal counsel in the motor voter lawsuit 13 years ago. In fact, he's taught leadership classes to ACORN members and worked with or alongside ACORN or affiliates. Obama's campaign paid ACORN $80,000 directly and another $800,000 to an affiliate.

As for McCain, he's trying to focus on Obama's relationship with Weather Underground founder Bill Ayers. Not surprisingly, there is an overlap with Ayers, ACORN, and Obama. But with McCain, why did he pull out of Michigan without even telling his running mate and Michigan Republicans? Seems like there's something wrong leaving Palin in the dark. The line in Cool Hand Luke goes like this: "What we have here is a failure to communicate."

What do the reader think about Joe the Plumbers Economic Plan?
Thanks
“America’s Self Preservation Plan”
By Joe the Plumber

As our government meets with congress to develop a “Financial Rescue Package” for our economy and Obama talks about raising our taxes, let me make it quick and easy for them by giving them what I feel is the Plumbers Plan.

America’s Self Preservation Plan

This Plan is so easy and I guarantee it will end our recession quickly, boost the economy, increase the world value of the US dollar, significantly reduce global warming and the US carbon footprint, eliminate our dependency on foreign fossil fuels, create jobs, reduce wars saving lives, reduce hunger, keep US wealth in America, and make history and all of this by 9-11-2011.

You may be saying to yourself, this is not possible; no simple plumber can ever come up with a plan which achieves all of these great things while congress is stagnated, it would be too good to be true and difficult to implement!

Well, you are all wrong, this plan is so easy and simple, it can be achieved by the American people making only one decision in their life, without spending a dime, with little effort, in fact, it will probably save you money for you.

Believe me this plan is fool proof or I will never snake a toilet again.

How can this be done? Well here is my simple plan in one sentence

1. Park your gas vehicle for good and purchase a compressed air car within the next year or at least put one on order, it will not cost you a dime more than your spending now, it basically will be free. (Read on this plan will make total sense soon, I promises or I will quite the plumbers union.)

How can this be the whole plan? Simple, these cars will be for sale in the US beginning in 2009. These cars will cost approximately $16,000.00 but, as I said, it will not cost you a dime more than you’re paying not for transportation. You will pay for this car over the next 3 years with the extra money you will save ($200 to $400/month) by not fueling your gasoline powered vehicle. Compressed air cars can travel up to 90 mph and approximately 125 miles on a $2.00 tank of compressed air. (Google search compressed air cars for more details on this technology), but I am not here to promote any particular car manufacturer, I am here to explain how my simple economic plan if fool proof.

If we all purchase ( again, no real cost purchase) these cars at the same time this out cry of the American people will force the government into providing tax breaks and credits, incentives and low interest financing. (Did I say tax credit Mr. Obama?) Banks and car manufacturers will look at these loans as safe investment and will easily grant them to the consumers but in won’t really matter to us because these cars are fairly inexpensive and will not cost you any more out of pocket money then you are currently sending fueling your gas vehicle. In fact, most people will save money and be driving a new environmentally friendly, green vehicle for free.

With the extra money in our pocket, the consumers can purchase a small compressed air refueling system for their home from their local compressed gas/propane Plumber. You can also just plug in your vehicle over night and it will recharge by it self. Gas stations may not cooperate with the transition of their tanks and pumps from gasoline to compressed air so the government may need to aid in pushing through simple regulation for compressed air home refueling systems along with financing and incentives for localized compressed air refueling stations to speed up the process.
Sorry you need to google this plan I ran out of space

Here is more.
“America’s Self Preservation Plan”
By Joe the Plumber
That’s it! “The America’s Self Preservation Plan”, how easy was that? A plumber figured it out!

Now you’re asking yourself, how will this no cost purchase of these cars by the American people achieve all of the great things I stated in my opening paragraph?

Easy and here is how it wills all falls into place!

1. The end of our recession and a boost for the economy: most car driving American families I know are spending between $50 to $100 dollars a week in gas refueling, minimum. This equates to $200 to $400 dollars for gas minimum per month. This money is substantial and in not going into the American economy. Most of the money is going overseas making a few people very wealthy. These very wealthy people have too much money with little needs, they do not live in the US and therefore they are not putting it back into the American economy. If consumers, instead of rich oil lords, are saving this money and putting it into the American economy it will result in a proven continuous stimulus package. Consumers will spend the extra money on home purchases, renovations, electronics, cars, vacations, air travel, investments, cure cancer, heart disease more plumbing supplies etc. Most importantly the cost of oil per barrel will begin to plunge drastically to compensate for the surplus in world oil, reducing gas prices at our pumps. The reduction of gas prices will further help the economy and aid in the transition phase to total compressed air transportation. Other technologies such as generators and heating system boilers etc will emerge from the compressed air technology reducing oil dependencies further.

2. Increased value of the US dollar: Once the US starts climbing out of the recession and the price of oil per barrel starts to fall the value of the US dollar will increase, basic economics. Quality of life will be better; as US citizen can then return to traveling once more out side of the country.

3. Reduced global warming and US carbon footprint: These cars have zero emissions! The US consumes the majority of the world fossil fuels resulting in significant US pollution and emissions. I understand that you need to consume fossil fuels to produce compressed air but this type of generation produces far less emissions and can be regulated easier. Power to manufacture compressed air can also be produced by alternate energies such as nuclear, coal, hydro-electric, solar, fuel cells, cogeneration, wind generation, bio plant, wave generation etc, all American made self supported technologies. Let’s not forget the reduction of oil spill risk and disasters which involve costly environmental clean up, reduced off shore drilling and terrible affects oil spills have on habitats. By the way, does anyone really know what the effect of removing all of this oil from the ground is doing to our planet? What about the energy saving resulting from not having to pump the oil from the fields, transferring of oil to gas stations buy trucks and tankers etc?

4. Eliminate our dependency on foreign fossil fuels: If the majority of us purchase compressed air cars this will force all US car manufacturers to get into this arena and other transportation vehicles such as trucks boats etc will soon follow eventually eliminating the need for foreign fossil fuel dependency.

5. Create jobs: Compressed air home or centralized refueling stations will need to be installed, plumbed and built, all US car manufacturers will need to get hire labor and get into production of compressed air vehicles very quickly. Why do you think American’s buy foreign cars? It’s because they get better gas mileage and the vehicles are more dependable!
Ran out again one more time sorry

“America’s Self Preservation Plan”
By Joe the Plumber

many years and I know these cars can be produced within a short period to time.

6. Reduce wars and save lives: If you think 9-11-2001 and our current crisis in the Middle East is not because of oil terrorism you have been living under a rock. Our young men are being killed and permanently damaged because we are dependant upon oil.

7. Reduce Hunger: Corn field and oil fields used for energy can be farmed to produce more food for the hungry. There are hundreds of thousands of acres of land not producing food, why. The Government can offer more farm-aid for this transition.

8. Keep US wealth in America. Yes we have witnessed history in the making twice in less then 10 years. 9-11-2001 and 2008, right now. For those of you who are not aware of the situation, US wealth is exiting our shores faster then it has ever done before in our history. Many wealthy people, investors etc are leaving the country to protect their $$ investments due to high taxes, low dollar value etc. This combined with the high foreign oil prices is resulting in our countries wealth exiting our boarders at a rate never seen before in history. Yes, if you have not figured it out oil controls our economy and foreign oil lords are in the driving seat, pretty frightening.

I hope I made all of you a believer in my plan, its fool proof. I am not a politician, lobbyist; writer, I am not associated with compressed air car manufacturers. I am a plumber by profession. I am married with a family, an American concerned with all of the current issues which face us today in the US. My father and grandfathers fought and died for this country. My family has worked in the plumbing industry and was part of the “Great Industrial Revolution” which built this country and put us on top as a world power. Our generation is now in control of this country and it is our turn to make History with this simple plan.

I can say one thing for what it’s worth; I guarantee this plan will work, with no new taxes Obama, but it will take all of us to believe. If we fight together the results will be real with little to no effort or financial burden to all of us Americans. If we do our part in purchasing these types of vehicles this year the rest will fall into place I guarantee it.

I said my plan will take approximately 3 year to be fully implemented although results will be seen almost immediately.

Let’s set a date to be oil independent, it is appropriate to set it for 9-11-2011 on the 10th anniversary of a historic tragedy. This day will go down in History as “Oil Independence Day”, the day the American people fought back and achieved independent from foreign oil and tool back control of our country and economy. We should do this for our children’s future and in honor and memory of all of the victims of oil related wars and terrorism.

Thank you for your time.
