Sarah Palin: The Rape Kit Controversy

Posted by Staff, Wasilla Project at 9:49 AM on October 8, 2008.

If someone's home is burglarized, the tools of investigation are not paid for by the victim. Why was rape considered different in Wasilla?

That if these women press charges, then those boys-will-be-boys will be have to be named and, you bethca, we hockey moms don't want the names of our sons or their friends known in that way, also and in that. So if chargin' these women for rape kits, as it were (wink), is goin' to stop them, then the maverick thing to do is charge them.

The State legislator and the Republican Wasilla Town Councilwoman were credible to the max. Thank you for your contributions to the growing accumulation of Palin's "mis-statements."

One might expect a normal person to be embarrassed to show her face in public.

After she loses November 4, then what, a centerfold in Penthouse Magazine?

Many people, including me, are likely to find such videos repugnant.

But, it is possible that many others on Alternet enjoy such ads, and that such ads reinforce their political affiliation away from the Republican party. It is likely that Republicans have equally (or even more) repugnant videos that are being used for the enjoyment and reinforcement of political affiliation of many Republicans.
Also, it is possible that the masses that watch all the infomercials and find that the people in those videos are real everyday people expressing unbiased, well-informed opinions, are likely to be greatly influenced by such videos.
A balance of the pros and cons of posting such videos should be sought. I hope the "progressives" will lean more towards avoiding such videos.
Sincerely,
Aouie

And the answer is...

> If someone's home is burglarized, the tools of investigation are not
> paid for by the victim. Why was rape considered different in Wasilla?

Because false accusations of burglarization are not rampant, nor do they have potentially life-changing ramifications for those falsely accused, because burglary is not as emotionally charged an issue an rape is, by any stretch of the imagination. Duh. If only the Rape Crisis Industrial Complex treated the crime as unemotionally and dispassionately as the staff's rhetorical question suggests in likening rape to just another petty crime, but that's about the opposite of the way it really is.

False accusations of rape make it much harder to prosecute real rapists, which means more rapists moving freely through society and causing more rape. So anything which can be done to discourage women from frivolously crying "Rape!" just because they can is a Good Thing. Why should the rest of us have to bear the expense of, and thus be enablers of, all the psycho-drama queens out there?

The evidence provided by a rape kit is often peripheral to whether an actual rape occurred or not, since it's consent -- for which, unfortunately, there's no test kit available -- which is usually the central issue, not whether sex happened, something the accused often freely admits to.

Rape Victims

It is horrendous that the VP candidate can be so out of touch with the reality of her sisters who have been raped and then "raped" again by the very authority that is paid to protect them. This is truly frightening to me. We already know that McCain is violent and many times uncontrollable in his relationships with those who disagree with him. What a symbol to take to the White House if they are elected! We will be in real trouble then! Not just women!

What makes it especially gross, is that

What makes the rape kit scandal especially gross, as I discuss in my new book Thanks But No Thanks: The Voter's Guide to Sarah Palin, is that Alaska has the highest rate of rape in the United States (which itself has the highest rate of rape among countries that keep such statistics.) What's going on in Alaska?

Interestingly enough, anarcho-capitalists call for just that. What are "anarcho-capitalists," you ask? They are libertarians who dare to follow their ideology to its logical end. So the next time you feel a kinship with a libertarian, on civil liberties for example, remember that their economic policies are so ghastly as to make a medieval serf guffaw.

PBS has a poll

PBS has an online poll posted asking if Sarah Palin is qualified. Apparently the right wing knew about this in advance and are flooding the voting with YES votes.

The poll will be reported on PBS and picked up by mainstream media. It can influence undecided voters in swing states.

Please do two things -- takes 20 seconds.

1) Click on link and vote yourself.

Here's the link:
http://www.pbs.org/now/polls/poll-435.html

2) Then send this to every single Obama-Biden voter you know, and urge them to vote and pass it on.

The last thing we need is PBS saying their viewers think Sarah Palin is qualified.

right now it's tied 49%-49%

Is About Her Motive, Stupid

Most or all rape victim kits contain a morning after pill, which to Pompom Palin, who would force rape victims to bear the rapists child, is akin to murder. Of course she says we will not let the public pay for it! We should pity the daughters of the women who support her because, "She's just like us," but more to the point we should work to get this message out and to send Pompom back to Alaska to pray for her gas pipeline.

The Sad Truth Is That This Isn't Isolated

There are lots of jurisdictions where the rape kit is considered part of the medical service rendered and therefore charged to the victim. It's under the radar and you might well live somewhere that's true. Trust me, it's not just some small town in Alaska. Find out. Raise Hell. This needs to stop.

I performed oral sex on him willingly, but if I was a woman and was raped, I agree that I should have to option to kill the baby.
