There's been so much going on with the campaign lately that I hadn't paid much attention to Bob Woodward's newest book, The War Within.

Recently Woodward was on Real Time with Bill Maher and he relayed a couple of interesting items.

First, he said that during White House discussions on Iran, a senior military leader asked Bush what his strategy was. Bush's answer? "They're assholes." Just gives you a sense as to how crude and clueless our current president is, and how desperately we need a change.

Second -- and this was really interesting -- he maintained that the surge was not the cause of the decrease in violence in Iraq. Instead, Woodward said a covert program run by the U.S. military was the primary reason for the decrease in violence. Woodward didn't get specific, but it basically sounded like a targeted assassinations program.

According to Woodward, the administration has confirmed his account. Seems like that might be something for McCain to ponder the next time he wants to say that the surge is the defining reason he ought to be elected president.

Digg!

How is Woodward going to judge what effect the assassination program had? What his remark does is draw attention to the fact that he has something to reveal. It's self-serving. It even serves the administration. It shows they're achieving results, who cares if they are using nasty methods. Wow, they even showed some restraint before! How exactly would there be opposition to this news? Could there have been a better time for the announcement?

What Patrick Cockburn says instead, amongst other things, is that the Shiites mostly won, Iran is capable of negotiating ceasefires inside Iraq, and that they work together with Maliki. Now that is an interpretation I can imagine the administration would object to.

I would add that there also has been a large degree of ethnic separation, which also dampens the conflict.

If he was referring to the IRIr regime, They are what he says, but he and his administration is one as well :)

But if he is a dumb as I think he is, then he was probably saying this about all Iranians, and in that case, I have to say the old persian proverb. "Out of a toilet, you can not expect anything other than what is inside of it"
(in Farsi, it is 'az khalaa, haman borun taraavad, ke dar oost' just in case you wondered :) )

Having your name appear on a list of people targeted for assassination is just a signature away.

I have No Doubt 'Poor George' had No idea what was in the Hopper when he agreed to allow DICK to be his VP. I'd even guess He actually thought we had suffered an 'Unforesable' event on 9/11- W's ain't too sharp esp when it requires Facts and Linear thought/logic.
Exactly why CheneyCorp Picked Him over Jeb, to be their Frontman patsy!
but I am thinking Poor George got a mental Bitch slap repeatedly over the last 7years and is now fully complicit after the fact.
so regardless of his ignorance at the time of 9/11, Or his emotional immaturity or mental disabilities He too should be Hung for High Crimes. We could actually show some mercy to Poor George and hire a skilled Ax Man to lop his head off quickly, as thoughtful as Henry the 8th was to Anne. Cheney,Rummy wolfie et al should face the Fate of Sir William Wallace for their High Crimes!

For a guy who invaded Iraq because its leader was a bad man, it's only a small step to bombing Iran because "they're assholes."

If any other country in the world bases its foreign policy on similar principles, the U.S. of A. is toast.

Wait a sec. Wasn't the underlying rationale for taking out the World Trade Center something along those lines?

$300 a month

According to Dexter Filkins book, the success of the surge was not in increased manpower (though it didn't hurt much), butr in identifying insurgentes and paying them off, at a rate of $300 monthly. They needed the money, so they took the offer. They get to keep their Kalashnikovs and now they can buy groceries for their families, and the Americans can get on with their erection of the largest embassy on the planet, which we need for dispensing all those little pay envelopes and providing the oil fellas with comfy accomodations for negotiating contracts with the A-Rabs.

So it looks good, like we won't need all those soldiers and marines much longer, in Eye-raq, that is.

On to Afghanistan, where Empire Goes to Die.

Bush: arrogant ignoramus with no command of strategy

The arrogant ignoramus in the White House obviously fails to comprehend that Iran is a necessary part of the solution in the Middle East, rather than part of the problem. Iran recognizes that there is no military solution to the insurgency in Afghanistan, and that what is needed is more economic development, roads, power lines, etc. So Bush calls the Iranians "assholes"! The asshole is the president of the United States.
