Palin: Being Gay Is a 'Choice'

Yesterday in her interview with CBS's Katie Couric, Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) spoke on homosexuality, saying that she won't "judge people," but it is still a lifestyle choice that she would not make:

I have, one of my absolute best friends for the last 30 years who happens to be gay. And I love her dearly. And she is not my "gay friend." She is one of my best friends who happens to have made a choice that isn't a choice that I have made. But I am not gonna judge people. And I love America where we are more tolerant than other countries are. And are more accepting of some of these choices that sometimes people want to believe reflects solely on an individual's values or not. Homosexuality, I am not gonna judge people.

Watch it:

Homosexuality is not a choice, as all major mainstream medical and mental health professional organizations have concluded.

According to the American Psychological Association, "[M]ost people experience little or no sense of choice about their sexual orientation." Also, despite saying that she won't "judge" gay people, she backed a state constitutional ban to deny spousal benefits to the same-sex partners of public employees.

As Couric pointed out, Palin's church, the Wasilla Bible Church, also takes the position that homosexuality is a choice. In fact, it has sponsored a conference by James Dobson's Focus on the Family to help gays "overcome" their homosexuality through prayer and covert them into being straight. These programs are also opposed by every major medical association.

Digg!

Since when would you expect anyone from the religious right to take science and scientific evidence into account?

That homosexuality is not a disease, degeneration or a malformation to be ashamed of or condescending to.
I don't believe in pride (I am an homosexual) Why should I brag about my desires and pleasures? Why pride, which is a negative emotion and for (the religious) a capital sin, a bad thing across cultures?
But the thinking of the religious conservatism needs to be challenged and fought, openly, loudly, everywhere.

most telling i find is her claim that america is a bastion of tolerance and acceptance. while it may be true that we no longer put people to death (under the law) for homosexuality, i can tell you that it will be a cold day in hell before i give up the security my little gay family enjoys up here in canada (where i have been naturalized) to return to the nation of my birth.

You'll just work to prevent us from: marrying who we want, working where we want, living where we want, reading about other gay people in our libraries, etc, etc.

You are a liar and a coward.

I also think being gay is a choice. I think being straight is a choice as well.

Lets face it, as humans we are naturally bisexual. At some point in their lives, many choose one gender or the other.

I refuse to allow anyone, including both neocon religious idiots or overly zealous gay rights advocates, to label my attraction to other men (or my attraction to women either) as a disease, a genetic defect or anything other than a simple choice.

The important facet here is not where the preference or choice comes from, but the simple fact that we are citizens and have the inalienable right to MAKE that choice, and not be discriminated against for it.

An old political joke gets updated with the times:

While suturing a cut on the hand of a 75 year old rancher, who's hand was caught in the gate while working cattle, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man. Eventually the topic got around to Palin and her bid.

The old rancher said, "Well, ya know, Palin is a Post Turtle'".

Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a 'post turtle' was.

The old rancher said, "When you're driving down a country road you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a 'post turtle".

The old rancher saw the puzzled look on the doctor's face so he continued to explain. "You know she didn't get up there by herself, she doesn't belong up there, and she doesn't know what to do while she's up there, and you just wonder what kind of dummy put her up there to begin with.

This is the position of all major religions, including the Catholic church. Considering that there are over 1500 species with homosexual behavior it seems to me that this is the way God made them.

Basically, the religious people are guilty of the sin of pride as they do not approve of the way God made animals and people. They need to be praying for their own souls and leave everyone else to be what God made them.

I have just one question for Sarah Palin:
Is being a total moron a choice too??

She should know.

in tonight's debate, trying to say she was tolerant but remains convinced that LGBT is a choice. I guess she would not call for capital punishment in that "choice" department. But beware of this slick chick. She is not a keeper!

where she said that she felt gay couples should have the same rights as heterosexual couples, which is direct contradiction to what she actually did in Alaska? She went on to say that she would not allow for the marriage to be defined as anything other than between one man and one woman. This woman is a liar, a hypocrite, and a very dangerous person! Biden said that while he personal does not believe in gay marriage, he did feel strongly that committed couples should enjoy all the rights of any other committed couple under the law, which as I understand the laws of most states would require either a legally recognized civil union or a marriage.

Notice how she uses the tokenism line:

"I have a gay friend therefore I can't possibly be homophobic or judge/discriminate against/or hate gay people"..."because, you know I have a gay friend" and "did I mention I have a gay friend"...and..."can I introduce you to my gay friend over here"...and..."I love my gay friend"..."my gay friend"

Ugh.
