My friend Sarah Posner has been all over televangelist John Hagee in The American Prospect. In June, she wrote a lengthy exposé of Hagee, who preaches that an apocalyptic war with Iran "is foretold in the Bible as a necessary precondition for the Second Coming."

Hagee founded an outfit called Christians United for Israel (CUFI), and has been lobbying hard for a big Middle East conflagration in rightwing evangelical circles.

Yesterday, Sarah shed some light on the recent wingnut debates over whether we're fighting World War III or IV or XII or whatever. She noted a possible connection between the ramblings of Newt Gingrich, William Kristol, John McCain and others, and Hagee's bloodthirsty ideology:

Hagee has spent the past six months mobilizing popular support for a war with Iran. Based on his end-times prophecy … and false claims that Iran is just months away from a viable nuclear weapon, Hagee maintains that confrontation with Iran is necessary to fulfill God's plan for the future of the world.
While it hardly seems like a sound basis for foreign policy, as the violence between Israel and Hezbollah escalates at the Israel-Lebanon border and beyond, Hagee's view of Iran's central role in a world-altering showdown seems to be catching on.[…]
The Jerusalem Post reported this week that remarks by Newt Gingrich and John McCain that the Israel-Lebanon violence marks the beginning of World War III have their roots in Hagee's book. Knesset member Benny Elon told the Post that Gingrich and McCain "said this because they think it will lead to Iran getting involved, which they believe will set off World War III,'" adding that their "comments originated with American evangelist John Hagee." As Hagee and his minions from CUFI descend on Washington this week to lobby Congress, armed with Hagee talking points claiming that Iran will have a nuclear weapon in six months, could it be a coincidence? […]
It certainly could be. But think about Bush's No Child Left Behind legislation, a phrase with distinctly different meanings for those hanging around waiting impatiently for Armageddon and those of us who aren't all that keen on meeting our maker anytime soon.
Preachers like Hagee seem easy to ignore because we think their audiences, while vast, consists of rank-and-file religious extremists who have no real sway over American policy-makers. But Benny Elon's statement shows that Hagee does have such influence.
That's the important point. I couldn't care less about what people believe or what they worship -- it doesn't touch me at all -- but when people like Hagee, people who are trying to bring about the end of the world, get a seat at the table and can push for a war that any dolt can see would be disastrous, that's an imminent threat to the republic.

PS: See Jim Lobe's "From Beirut to Tehran" over at Tompaine.

Digg!

I doubt that foreign policy is dictated by Christian prophecy. But when it is convenient in order to shore up support among the people, I would be surprised if the administration and its followers could resist the temptation.

Likewise, America's adventures abroad are going to be used by some "Christians" to shore up their support.

It's all just mutual mental masturbation.

You mean to tell me this whole time I was just wasting my time waiting around for the messiah? If I would have known that war with Iran was a prerequisite to the second coming, I could have gotten in some good clean sin, then repented when the war started. I'm so mad that the fundamentalists have been yanking my chain this whole time.

Prophecy -

To all too many religious folk here in America, namely extremists, biblical prophecies aren't forewarnings of events to come; They're an instruction manual to bringing about the end of civilization and causing - forcing - Jesus Christ to return to Earth. The prospect of a massive war in the Middle East has these sadistic, self-serving, self-righteous psychopaths salivating. That means we're one step closer to the end, and that they're one step closer to salvation - while the rest of the world dies, of course.

Coming from middle America, I've been exposed to this rhetoric plenty of times. An extremely popular and disturbing interpretation of the Bible, explained above, is what makes a lot of these 'rank and file' warmongers tick. Some of these people actually think it's their duty to support the waging of wars in the Middle East because of the intended end-result; The Rapture - which is itself based upon a very abstract interpretation of the Bible, if my memory serves me well - is what they want, and they're willing to act as warmongers and makers of war themselves - a big no-no according to the good book - in order to make it happen. It's all for them.

It's important to keep an eye out for these people, which is part of the reason I appreciate this article a great deal. They're no better than the crazy-asses over in the Middle East blowing themselves up to earn themselves a seat next to Allah. When somebody thinks the end of the world is coming, and has nothing to lose and everything to gain from it, they're bound to start doing some pretty crazy shit. If they actually have influence over policy makers here, or if campaign platforms are actually constructed based upon this ideology - that the Rapturists come before the world - we're going to have some very big problems both here at home and abroad.

A seat at the table is difficult to avoid under a democratic system, as it should probably be in all but actual, imminently volatile cases. The key issue in circumstances such as these is how the others at the table think about and react to the unorthodox, often dangerous values professed and upheld by the extremists.

The really scary bit - even for us outside your unfortunately ailing republic - is that some of your either unhinged or ethically challenged power brokers will see an opportunity for themselves, and give credence to these table-mates, some of whom often interpret religious edict and dogma for shortsighted, emotionally-driven, self-absorbed gain. An outlook, by the way, which is entirely counter to the aims and goals of true spiritual movements.

I mean, it's not as if personal gratification is unknown to these 'leaders', now is it?

So we are to listen respectfully to Benny Elon and Hagee?

The context for the Book of Revelations is that it is characteristic of a zillion similar prophecies that were not only in circulation at the time it was written but for centuries before and clearly centuries after. Unless you share the delusion that it was written by a divine hand, it's a piece of poetry written in code to people who wanted oppressive governments overthrown.

In my dreams, in the lyrics of pop music ("Hard Rain Gonna Fall" etc.), and certainly Hollywood's dystopic films' penchant for special effects, we can find the same messages: "I can see into the future!"

And they are believed by the same people who buy love potions, penis enlargement, and How To Make a Million Dollars books.

That is, when was there ever a time without snake oil salesmen? And why do they get publicized by aspiring progressives?

I first became aware of this last year when I watched Hal Lindsey's (Late Great Planet Earth) TBN show called "Intelligence Briefing". I was dumbstruck when he advocated nuking Iran and annihilating the entire nation if the US suffered another terrorist atack; and as I understood his words, regardless of who was responsible and without delay. That was alarming! Hagee is at the forefront as the current harbinger of doom, organizing his pro-israel network of apostic christians to do the bidding of their true master, Lucifer.
I am a Christian and see these so-called "christian leaders" for the wolves they are, ravenous for blood, seething with hatred. In the name of the Christ they lead their followers down the path of apostasy with vengeance in their hearts and the cold blood of self-righteousness in their veins. The lust for their own eminent rapture blots out the main tenets of Chrisitanity, forgiveness and compassion, as their march to war on an entire race of human beings will surely bring to fruition their own vile understanding of redemption. It is detestable and predictable. The bible teaches that this would happen and so it is happening before our very eyes. They have made a bargain with the Devil and when they are no longer useful the beast will turn on them along with the Christians that embody the True Word of God. When they find out that instead of being raptured they are stuck here with the rest of Mankind they so wish would be destroyed to usher in the Kingdom of Christ, the majority of them will betray their own Savior to save their skins.
Hagee, Roberts, LaHaye, Lindsey and the gaggle of Satan's soldiers, whether by ignorance of intent, are sowing the seeds of a dark harvest. And they will take as many as they can with them.

I am always amazed at the amount of people that tuck their heads up their behinds when these fundies start screeching about the return of JC, forget about it! He isn't coming back, and why would he? Take a look around you, think he wants any part of this toxic planet? Most if not all of the animals are in decline except for chickenhawks, and the oceans are turning into a mess, still these brain dead folks still hope for salvation and whatever the rapture is supposed to bring. For myself I wouldn't want to go anywhere these clowns are going, I would much rather be with anyone else wherever they go to and exclude the christian right wing party from my presence. I think I have a choice and it isn't just two, so in my mind they are the doomed ones, wouldn't it be justice if some alien came along, looked like JC and harvested them? Fitting punishment if you ask me.

I'd honestly be more impressed with this guy were he to use those collected offerings to have some big name Beverly Hills liposuctionist pipeline three people's worth of unseemly fat from his big fat hiney, and he subsequently testify that he lost the lard through prayer, fasting, and christian paladis. Instead, when he's not ranting maniacly in front of these ninety foot posters of middle eastern monsters of the moment, playing pin-the-tail-on-the-antichrist, he's going off about Isreal's dominionist rights to real estate by order of God. He's taken the liberty to rewrite the Bible to provide sustenance for his twisted world views. He's produced his share of end-time fiction movies, using some fairly notable names. Cornerstone Church, the ministry, is more a lucretive cottage industry than Jesus' definition of a true church. Now this!

Judas probably thought he was doing god's will when he betrayed Jesus, trying to force him to take over. Same thing as these nutcases are doing now. A bunch of Judases. I believe Revelation or some other book in the bible mentioned Jesus telling some people "I never knew you." Who do you imagine that is? Whoever it is are people who do this, that, and the other thing in his name. Makes you want to go "hmmmm."

to wake up the general public to the fact that these guys really are dangerous? They may compose only 30% of the population, but the big question to ask is, What part of society do these folks belong to and how much influence do they have in comparison to the average Joe?

The answer to that question is they belong to the same part of the population that is getting tax breaks from the Bush Administration. They have a lot of power and influence, especially since our feckless leader claims to be a "Born Again Christian", as do many members of our republican dominated Senate and House. My point is this...these people, that at one time in history could be written off as looney tunes, must be taken seriously because they do have the ability to influence diplomatic decisions being made by the current government.

Great article Josh! Thanks for making this potentially dangerous situation more well known.

Going to get worse

The unverified US Official statement that Iranians were present for the North Korean missile launchings is part of the process of planting seeds to be used in speeches and with the talking heads on Sunday mornings. Can't you hear C__tholeleeza Lice and Pencil Dick Cheney now, "We have reports that the Iranians are attempting to buy medium range missiles from the North Koreans which threaten our interests in the Middle East."

It will take more time to POINT OUT that Iran is the boogeyman culprit here. Our lying administration will make more speeches while pointing out how bad Iran is and they want to attack us. The debacle in Israel, Lebanon and Gaza will be permitted to go on because it is a regime change in line with Cheney's plans to Democratize the ME. Israel is intent on creating subservient governments around it. Lebanon was never viewed as a true democracy with Hezbollah members in it's parliament just as Hamas was not considered a true government. Everything in the middle east is measured through the perceptions of the Israelis.

My perception is that the Israelis are terrified of Iran getting the nuclear bomb so the Israelis are trying to come across that we, the US, will be the victims and we need to act to protect ourselves which will fit in with Cheney's (the real evil behind our misadministration)motives. War is business to them and the more bombs, bullets and contracts you can sell means it's all good.

More important to this administration than what they do is what they appear to do. Powell's speech to the UN will be brought up in the future as a defense that they only went to war in Iraq as the last option, not the first as we know it to be. They are laying the groundwork for future claims of how the Iranians attacked us or were planning to. If Israel should inadvertently drop a few bombs into Syria and they come in along with Iran or as a poster pointed out yesterday, what if an American evacuation cruise ship was struck by an "Iranian missile".

I don't want to anger other posters but the US and Israel are perceived as the "axis of evil" right now to the rest of the world. We are Israel's enabler and the reason a ceasefire is out of the question.

Josh, I did not take the time to read your friend's article so please forgive me if she includes this in her analysis but neocons have been talking about WWIII or WWIV since the beginning of this war. Many of them believe that the Cold War is WWIII which meant that our invasion of Iraq was the beginning of WWIV or a clash of civilizations. I do not doubt that this pastor has immense influence with his followers but the decision to call this WWIII or IV was made long ago by the intellectuals who run the neocon movement.

I'm a freelance [leaving this part out] and have been doing some informally-contracted work recently for a huge Baptist-owned conference center a short trip from Santa Fe. They rent out space to other groups but mostly this summer, it seems, it's a summer bible school -- to the nth degree though - all quite surreal, the regimentation, the size of the complex, buses parked all over the place from all over (first one I noticed, MIDLAND TX, oh yay), the total aesthetic emptiness. It's clearly all a big rapture machine, getting the little ones lined up behind these fascistically twisted, robotically inculcated Jesus notions. To me it's absolute HELL. But I put it in parentheses, as it were, and go about my private work.

The guy I report to directly, always seems "up" - you know the type. He's got this crazed, coffee-loaded thousand page Revelations glare in his eyes. It's frikkin creepy for a radical free-spirit like me. I avoid any possible suggestion of conversation, even if it were baseball. But my point is, all these people there, hundreds of personnel, adminstrators or whatever, even more than a few of the teens, are so psyched about their "faith" it's as if WWII just ended. Instead, it's WWIII spun out across the airwaves and they're so god-damned happy. Where is Lebanon or IRAN on the map? Who cares, it's the eschaton.
Fucking crazy. Gods help us!

Like it or not the bible does make very specific references to a war involving Persia (Iran) with its allies Gog (Russia) invading from the North with the resulting war leaving "blood up to the horses bridles". But be that as it may
Being a "fundamentalist" myself (a much maligned group if there ever was one), we do not believe, like the Iranian president who is invoking the "hidden Imam" that we are to "push" a war with Iran. We do believe in it's certainty but that these events will happen on Gods timing and not ours. Nothing we can do will make it happen sooner or later. But we do believe that it will happen and it will be a deadful thing. I do also like the fact that "our" fundamentailists are portrayed to be on par with their fundamentalists.
Uh folks (idiots) half of the national tennis team in Iraq was murdered in drive by shootings a couple of months ago becasue they insisted on wearing SHORTS that is prohibited somewhere in the Qu'ran! Leaflets were spread prior warning them to "put their clothes back on in the sight of Allah" and if they didnt they would die. Well they died.
I believe my daughter should drive, can be president if she wants it bad enough and should go to college. I dont believe she should be stoned to death if she commits adultry while the man goes free. I also dont believe she should be killed if she has an abortion (that I abhor).

I know that you people love to villify "fundamentalists"- villfy hell., it is really DISCRIMNATE AGAINST us and thats OK, but keep those "open minds" when you do, dont let your brains fall out, take a deep breath and you will see that the differences in Christian Fundamentailism is night and day from those who feel they will get non stop virgins (pleasure) in "heaven". Do Muslim women get non stop virgins too?

The threat of war is a deeper problem than simple neocons. Democrats have been down since the beginning.

And Democrats like Russ Feingold are pushing for war against Iran, too. So our choices are:

- war with Iran
or
- war with Iran

That's not a choice, that's a threat!

They'd better start reading their Hal Lindsey

Hal Lindsey, as early as 1968 in "Late Great Planet Earth", agreed with MOST ALL BIBLICAL END-TIMES SCHOLARS that the US WAS NOWHERE TO BE FOUND in the book of Revelations.

NOWHERE. And that means SOMEONE, or SOMETHING, removes it AS A WORLD POWER. UTTERLY.

The same book tells us China rides into the Mideast igniting Armageddon, the Final Battle, ON HORSEBACK.

Put two and two together, folks. Something wipes out all of China's electronic and electric infrasturcture and KNOCKS IT BACK TO THE STONE AGE.

An all out nuclear and nuclear pulse war between the combined arsenals of China and Russia, vs. the US, FITS THE BILL PERFECTLY.

CHRISTIANISTS and NEOCONS better start hoping THEY DON'T GET WHAT THEY WISH FOR.

The very SECOND this Admisntration pushes the button to nuke Iran, they commit Amerika to its suicide against China and Russia.

Lucifer's plan from the very begnning. NOT for a combined North American Union in a one-world Illuminati government; but rather, a one-world government WITHOUT THE US, with the remnant of surviving China quietly breeding 200 million Mongolian horses.

Rev Haggee is advocating the genocidal extermination of humanity. Christianity is a blood cannibal cult, whose members symbolically "Eat the body and drink the blood" of the little cannibal cult kid from Galilee

Our Desert Dwelling fellow members of the human race have a penchant for the genocidal extermination of other members of the human race. It is not bad or good that we are dealing with, it is rather the eco-system that these people arise from.

Our Petro-Nazi war criminals, who have put upon us, the continuing threat of extermination from nuclear weapons, need to explain themselves.

Unlimited heat and electrical energy is available to humanity once we decide to set upon a path of peace. Our genocidal cannibal cult and blood cannibal cult kids appear to be unable to reconcile themselves to allowing such a thing to happen.

The higher level powers, "ET" have so far held our nuclear war criminals down from exterminating us. "ET" may consider them to be merely stuck in a type of "Animal Primitivism," and is allowing them time to grow a mind, one that is not consumed by the passion to exterminate the human race.

It seems like that is where we are headed. However, the Israel-Arab war is the undercard. The main event is coming. As Israel drops bombs indiscriminately, the US gov't clamps down on rights at home by stealing private lands, detaining peaceful protestors and forcing Amazon to drop the book "America Deceived" by E.A. Blayre III. Soon, Iran will be attacked by America, casting the entire Middle East into chaos. Toss in another false-flag attack on the US (like 9/11) and the masses will beg for the 'safety' of One World Gov't.
Final link (before Google Books caves in and drops the book):

Background on Hagee's book

Alarmingly, Hagee claims to have got his information from Israeli military sources. From the publisher's press release:

"With an initial printing of 250,000 for its Jan. 17 release, Jerusalem Countdown provides detailed information that Hagee has received from top Israeli government officials concerning a nuclear showdown between Iran and Israel."

I wrote about this on my blog - see here.

(The publisher, Stephen Strang, is just as virulent as Hagee himself, by the way)

JOHN HAGEE, LIKE FALWELL, JESS JACKSON, SWAGGERT, JIM BAKER, REV SHARPRTON , ET AL MUST DECIDE ARE THEY GOING TO FOLLOW THEIR VOCATION AS "PASTORS OR POLITICAL ADVOCATES...???" WE NOW HAVE DOUBTS ABOUT THEIR POLTICAL LEANINGS MORE SO , SINCE THEIR STRONG ADVOCACY TO THE CURRENT "TURD BLOSSOM " ADMINISTRATION...THEIR TRAINING AND VOCATION IS IN RELIGIOUS SECTOR, NOT THE POLITICAL...SO WHY STICK THEIR NECK OUT AND EXPEND THEIR RELIGIOUS BACKGROUND IN POLITICS...GRANTED THAT TWO MAJOR DIVIDERS IN SOCIETY ARE RELIGION AND POLITICS, BOTH MAN-MADE AND DIRECTED...FAITH AND BELIEFS IN GOD AND SCRIPTURE ARE MANDATORY TO CHRISTIANS WHO BELIEVE, SO WHY FOLLOW MAN-MADE RULES...???IN MY OPINION, GEORGE BERNARD SHAW HAD IT RIGHT WHEN DESCRIBING PERSONS WHO ENJOY EXPOUNDING THEIR VIEWS AS AN EXERCISE IN " MUTUAL MENTAL MUSTURBATION:
"He knows nothing and thinks he knows everything. That points clearly to a political career. "

Break It Down to Neo-cons & Rapture Right

We all know about the neo-cons. But the main struggle is going to come when the Rapture Right have to point out to the Israeli's that they must CONVERT to Christianity or DIE. This is written throughout the Second Coming literature. Over & over.

What most people don't know about these Rapture Rightists is that they are IN Israel helping to settle in these immigrant Jews who are flowing into Israel from Europe AND America. They are demanding their legacy, a plot of land, EVEN if it means destroying Palestinian homes. These Jews say piss on the Palestinians--we are chosen for this land in the Bible.

American Rapture MISSIONARIES are exhorting these immigrants to come to Israel and settle in the Promised Land and be PREPARED for the Second Coming. The kicker comes when you find out that American Jews from NY, CA, NJ, TX, and FLORIDA, among many states AND Christian NON-Jews are waiting at the immigration centers to INDOCTRINATE these new folks with literature meant to point them toward the Pathway to Salvation at the S.C.

Tim Lahaye's series, which sold 40 MILLION copies in the US, among other various Rapture writers DEPICT the S.C. as all-or-nothing "purge" of non-Christian believers.

Either you are with us or you are condemned to die!

Now of course the Neo-cons don't believe this crap but they USE it to further their aims of the culmination of Leo Strauss's fantasy--world domination through the control of the spigot of oil in the Middle East. They lucked out that Babylon happens to be located in Iraq. The Rapturists see this as the Prophecy.

Grover Norquist, one of the Chief Nightcreepers readily admits that he doesn't give one steaming shit about the Rapture but he will USE their support to get the job of dismantling ALL government entitlement programs, if that is what it takes.

It is a safe bet that the now defunct PNAC, and the bottom feeders at the GOP thinktanks--AEI, HERITAGE, CATO, HUDSON, MANHATTAN, HOOVER, OLIN, KOCH--all arms of the billionaire sugar-daddies that fund these corporate welfarists are of the same disposition towards the Rapture Right. The Rapturiists also also have their own think tank, it is called the Council on Domestic Policy. It houses such money-grubbing Bible-pumpers like DeLay, Dobson, Robertson, Lahaye, Falwell and others of that ilk which include politicians, millionaire "closet" Rapturists and media moguls that have established a 24/7 shortwave dominance of the Christian Way which pumps out all the talking points-GAYS, ABORTION, LIBERALS, DRUGS, FAMILY VALUES, WELFARE, PC These "platoon" efforts maintain the flames of hatred that keep those DOLLARS flowing into the endless "hats" that are passed for the "desperate" support needed to fight the War AGAINST Christianity. If they are so POOR how come their ranks contain so many millionaires?

Answer this one--when is the last time someone called for the murder of Pat Robertson? BUT...When was the last time you heard Pat Robertson call for someone's "murder"? A couple of months ago! Hugo Chavez.

This ain't no fairytale folks!!

I am certainly glad that John Hagee has such a perfect line to his god that he can guarantee the literal truth and validity of his prophesy of the end times. Of course, for those of us who think he's simply nuts, what happens when he's wrong, it isn't his god's end times, and the whole world is embroiled in a war without end? Will he apologize and make it all okay again?

I must say that I see alot of Jesus bashing in the world today, and alot of very confused people of faith. However, It has been my experience that anyone who has actually read the words of Jesus and his apostles understands that Jesus never calls for violence and commands those that follow him to love everyone. How is it that an evagelistic preacher would call for such a thing? Who knows? Now if you believe the words of Jesus to be true, and I do, than everyone should care and love one another respecting one another. Why is this such a hard thing to do in this world? If people spent less time worrying about themselves and abiding in the words of Jesus Christ the world would be a better place. The Bible is a compilation of many books throughout history. Much in which is the history of Israel and how the many nations were formed. Tommorrow when you all wake up you will be living in the 28th day the seveth month in the yr 2006. A dating system which was developed around Jesus Christ himself. I wish that everyone could experience the true love in the gospel of Christ. I'll stop there and end with this quotation from the Book of Matthew- Chapter 7 verses 21-23. Jesus said "Not everyone who says to Me, Lord, Lord, shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father in heaven. Many will say to Me that day, 'Lord,Lord have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name? And the I will declare to them,'I never knew you, depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!'
end quote. I leave you these words with the spirit of love my friends , that one day we may live in peace together.

Hi Guys,
I'm new to the forum and read the article. I would like to know exactly where Mr. Hagee has quoted that he is funding war and is pushing war for or with Iran.
I have searched every article concerning Hagee and this issue and the only thing that I have read remotely close is concerning Biblical prophecy which I don't think you guys are interested in, so it seems, or I might be wrong or both.
If anyone is interested to know about how Iran plays into all this into biblical prophecy, feel free to e-mail me beneatiah@yahoo.com
Thanks,
nita
